I don't have any trouble with garlic, but for those of you who do, I wondered if eating the green tops would be an okay substitute? I saw this on TV recently. I suppose you'd have to grow your own - I've never seen them in the store.

Re: can you eat the greens of garlic?
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 2:45 PMVery interesting idea! Several years ago (before I knew my IBS was really an onion/garlic intolerance), I tried garlic tops and loved them. (Mild sweet garlic flavor, texture a bit like asparagus.) Since I've realized that onion and garlic were what was making me ill, I haven't tried garlic tops again. I assume I'd have problems with them, since I have problems with chives (green onion tops). I'd sure be interested to know if anyone else has been able to eat them, but am not eager to be the one to try...
It's possible that even if I could tolerate them, I wouldn't like them anymore. For awhile I liked truffle oil, which has a garlic flavor but doesn't trigger symptoms, but lately I've found that I don't like it anymore; I think the taste of it makes me a little anxious, since my body knows that that taste is usually followed by nasty cramps and such. -

Re: can you eat the greens of garlic?
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 5:43 PMthe other night, we went to dinner at a friend's house. She had made pork and oven roasted vegetables. It was mostly carrotts and potatoes, which are ok, but there were also a few very small chopped onion pieces.... I was polite and pushed the onion away on my plate and ate what I could, meaning the carrots and potatoes.... even with that, there was a reaction, heartburn and a tiny bit of air in the tract. My first bet would be to stay away from garlic tops or chives, just because what they are associated with ( displeasure)..... for me. -

Re: can you eat the greens of garlic?
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 1:14 PMYep, I wouldn't really be inclined to try garlic tops again, even though they were yummy.
Onion juice gets on everything! Last Thursday, I helped a friend finish a plate of nachos. I very carefully removed every little piece of onion from every chip I ate, but I still ended up feeling horrible for 48 hours. Friday was a total non-day for me. By Saturday night, I was finally feeling human again. I hope I will remember this next time I feel tempted!
P.S. Hi Maggie!! :) -

Re: can you eat the greens of garlic?
Sun, March 22, 2009 - 6:58 PMAnyone with a true onion allergy shouldn't even try to pick them out and eat around them. Super dangerous. Eating a french fry from a place that has onion rings put me in the hospital for 4 days because I kept going back into anaphylaxis.
