It has been a great run and I am very proud of my tribe. I feel good in knowing that I helped to create something new and exciting for many people.

I thank all of you that have supported us thru the years. Without you all I never would have survived my diagnosis of Epilepsy, the loss of my job, license, car and the death of my Father-In-Law, my seperation from my husband and kids and so much more. You have all been a foundation in one form or another from Tribe members to fans to even my "enemies". I have learned much from you all and will mourn this time as a mother mourns a child. But I will also look back and smile at all the friendships, the adventures, the mis-understandings and the many lives I have touched.

I will miss my Faire family of 21 years and with both sadness and joy say "Good-Bye" to that chapter of my life.
Join the Cast of the Renaissance Pleasure Faire

IRWINDALE, California ( December 21, 2007)… Wanted: Talented, interactive, energetic performers to serve as time travel guides. The Time: The English Renaissance (circa 1540 -1603). The Place: The Renaissance Pleasure Faire at the beautiful Santa Fe Damn Recreation Area in Irwindale, CA. The Travelers: An audience of thousands looking for an opportunity to experience YOU!

The Renaissance Pleasure Faire offers a range of unique performing opportunities. We emphasize performer/audience interaction; performers should have a flair for improvisation and be able to create spontaneous dialogue with fellow cast members and the audience. A theatrical training is a plus but not essential. Performers at the Faire develop tremendous confidence, audience awareness as well as character and improvisational skills. Classes and rehearsals begin March 8, 2008. The Faire runs weekends from April 5 through May 18, 2008. The Renaissance Pleasure Faire is auditioning for the roles of:

-Queen Elizabeth I

We are seeking a dynamic actress with a love for environmental theatre. Keen knowledge of the time period is preferred. Classical training and improvisational skills a plus. You will need to be comfortable in an outdoor environment during the summer in full Elizabethan clothing. Improvising with fellow cast members and the audience will be required. You will need to be available to join the cast full time as a member of the Court of Queen Elizabeth and be available to rehearse as scheduled. The Faire will costume you for your role as Queen. You will need to prepare and be ready to present two contrasting monologues, both classical, one dramatic, one comedic. A speech of Elizabeth I is preferred but not required. Monologues should be no more than 3 minutes in length.. Be prepared to participate in improvisational exercises. This is a paid role.

-Theme Characters & Assorted Featured Players

We are seeking dynamic, gregarious, larger than life actors with a love for environmental theatre. Keen knowledge of the time period is preferred. This year’s theme takes us to an exotic sea port in Britain, therefore, we are looking for unique foreign characters from all over the world as well as the following Renaissance Faire favorites: Sir Walter Raleigh, Ambassadors from different countries, Lord Mayor, Lady Mayor, High Sheriff, Mistress of Misrule, Queen of the May, May Revelers, Master William Shakespeare, Brew Master and his Ale Wench, First Mate to Sir Francis Drake, Evil Tax Collector, The Three Witches from Macbeth, Understudies for Queen Elizabeth and for some of the male and female roles listed above. Theatre training and improvisational skills are a plus as you will be interacting with fellow cast members and the audience. You must be willing to work in an outdoor environment during the summer. You will need to be available to join the cast full time and to rehearse as scheduled. Some characters will be costumed by the faire. You will need to prepare two contrasting monologues, one dramatic, one comedic. One of classical nature is preferred but not required. No more than 3 minutes in length. Be prepared to participate in improvisational exercises. Some roles are paid.

-Musicians & Variety Performers

We are seeking talented, dynamic, interactive musicians and variety performers/ acts. Musicians are needed with early music repertoire(both English and World) to help create the “sound track” and ambience of the faire as strolling or stationary performers. The use of period instruments is strongly suggested but not required. You will need to prepare and be ready to present two contrasting period songs, one up tempo and one lyrical. No more then 3 minutes in length. Variety performers / acts should be ready to present the best 5
minutes of your act. Opportunity for pay possible but not guaranteed.

Auditions will be held at 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 5 – 6, and 4pm to 9pm Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 7- 8, at Debbie Reynolds Studios , 6514 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood CA. 91606. Please bring a head shot and resume or a press kit if you have one to the auditions. If you wish to schedule an audition or for further information please contact Carlos Peñaranda, the Entertainment Coordinator, at renfairentertainment @yahoo.com or by phone at 626-969-4750 ext.204.

Topkapi Saray, also known as the Palace of the Cannon Gate, was the seraglio of Turkey, or the palace of the Sultan. It was home to the Turkish sultans for almost four hundred years. In this palace lay the Harem, a secluded part of the palace belonging to the sultan and housing hundreds, if not thousands of women, concubines, children, and white and black servants. The environment of a Turkish Harem is one that has been romanticized throughout its existence. Many luxuries were given to the women of the Harem from the sultan himself or others; such gifts included silks, robes, and cloths of gold. The concept of the harem is in actuality considered to be that of privacy and protection for women, and could be applied in either the palace of the sultan or any modest home. The existence of the Harem dates farther back than the fourteenth century and life within it was certainly one of beauty, congestion, and education (Goodwin 121).

A large number of women would inhabit the Harem at one time, so many in fact that there was no place to sit down, and some would have had to live standing up. The Sultan’s mother, also known as the Queen, ruled the Harem and had over one hundred maids and serving girls. There were three to four beds in a room. It was suggested that there were 2,000 girls living in the Harem at one time, although researcher Godfrey Goodwin suggests this number may not be accurate and would have included the servant girls (127).

Although Harem women were always hand-picked for their beauty, after the Sultan chose his wife, the primary function of the Harem was then to serve as a finishing school to “educate elite girls to be the wives of the pages of the Palace School.” The women were taught “religion,…to sing and to play a musical instrument, along with dancing, poetry and the complex arts of love.” When they graduated they went on to learn to read and write and how to tell stories. This skill of telling stories was considered important everywhere in the empire, but more so in the Harem. It was said that every night one of the One Thousand and One Nights was read (Goodwin 127-29). Ironically, the tale of the Thousand Nights is about a harem girl telling one tale a night in order to stay alive, and in the end becomes the Queen of the Harem girls.

Because the Harem girls lived in secluded areas of the palace, it was difficult to catch a glimpse of them; artists of the West used tales such as the Arabian Nights, to create incredible paintings and illustrations of what they perceived to be the Turkish Harem. In the nineteenth century, European artists were all over the Ottoman Empire (196). These illustrations they painted were always elaborate and full of color, depicting the Harem women as “mysteriously veiled…riding in ox-drawn arabas or chattering by the Sweet Waters of Asia,” arabas being carriages reserved for the Sultan and his women (196). Other paintings accurately depicted the Harem women as nude bathing, washing silverware, and caring for their young.

Through the slow “seeding of the Western culture” into Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, by the end of the nineteenth century, the Harem slowly began to change. European artists and authors proved to be too great an influence on the East replacing the actual Harem with elaborate paintings and romantic stories.

The Turkish Harem was run by its own pyramid hierarchy of women. If the women were disobedient they were beaten or punished by being stripped of all their savings and left without hope of marriage or any other future. The women of the Turkish Harem may have been at the mercy of the sultan, who had them captured always against their will, but it was the sultan’s mother, the Valide, who held the title of Queen and ruler over each woman.

At the base of the pyramid lay the eunuchs and women servants. The women servants were kept to a strict code of silence and held few rights. They were to clean and care for the other women and at times acted as serving maids to the Valide. The eunuchs, on the other hand, were the only males allowed in the Harem and were a part of a guild system; they were usually members of the larger family of the sultan. There were three types of eunuchs: full eunuch, whose reproductive organs were cut early during childhood; half eunuch, who lost his testicles in his youth; and eunuch, whose testicles atrophied when he was a child. The full eunuchs were the most reliable: they did not have beards and their larynx was of a small size resulting in child-like voices. These males were trusted to not be a sexual threat to the women in the Harem and thus were appointed by the sultan to act as the women’s guards (Goodwin 129-33).

The next level consisted of the cariye, pupils and novices in training. One of the functions of the harem was to act as a school for these women. These women would have lessons in “music, singing, dancing, and the arts of poetry and love; also they would be taught Turkish, Persian, and religion.” These girls were also taught to read and write. A few graduated, while the rest married officers. The next level consisted of those privileged graduates of the Harem school (131).

The next level of women in the social structure of the Harem included those who had actually been seen by the sultan and may even have had contact with him. These women were intelligent, amusing, and skilled at providing physical pleasure, although they were still virgins. These were girls chosen by the sultan and were known as gediks, “girls in the sultan’s eye” (131).

Girls who slept with the sultan were known as ikbals and made up the next level of women known as the “sultan’s favorite.” They would “get their own rooms with their own slaves and kitchen maids and eunuchs.” As soon as the women became mothers, they reached a level of freedom in which they earned a much more “handsome income compared with the pocket change they received before.” If they happened to give birth to daughters their level would be elevated to that of Hasseki Kadin, “mother of daughters,” and they would move into a larger apartment. If they were to birth a male, their status would be raised to that of Hasseki Sultan, “mother of sons.” The mother of the eldest son would later move up to be the Valide when the sultan died, and so also become the Queen of the Harem (131-2).

Although there was the opportunity to climb the social harem structure, trouble was not far behind. Trouble usually began when a woman was raised to the status of an ikbal and slept with the sultan, because she was now seen as a rival to those women of the same rank and “therefore [would] be involved in the factional politics which were the zest of Harem life” (132). The goal was to become the Valide and rule over the plethora of women in the Harem. All matters of important business must also be passed through the Valide’s hands. Women of the Harem fought for this position and some went so far as to murder the sons of the Hasseki Sultans. If caught, they faced the punishment of being sacked and thrown into a river to drown (133).

Although the pyramid structure of the Turkish Harem caused friction between the women, order and rule was most dominant. Many of the female graduates, and even those who failed lessons, were allowed to marry officers of the Palace School where the men were recruited and trained. Each woman had the opportunity to be raised to higher status.

Once freed, Ferka learned all manner of warfare and became a slodier for the Wallachian government. While on duty in the market square, he came across a slave auction and saw a woman who was up for bid. The weathy Lord who was planning to buy her- known to be a dangerous and abusive man- was making a big show of what he planned to do with the girl. Ferka saw the fear in her eyes and at once offered a higher bid and won the "auction", at which point he freed her. Discovering she was Ukrainian, but raised Romani and taught their ways, he promised to protect her always. The fell in love straight away and have been inseperable ever since.

Olena ("Torch" or "Moon") made an orphan at the tender age of four was adopted by a Romani tribe and raised in their ways. She learned the trade of soothsayer and received training in palmistry and the cards. while traveling through Izmayil - a city that borders Romania- the tribe became victim to Romanian slave Traders who them separated the tribe, sending them to different auction houses. Olena, sent to Bucharest, was going to become a slave to the meanest slave owner known in the area. This owner often presented his slaves as sexual entertainment for their rich guests. Just as the bidding was coming to an end, the most handsome "Romanian" soldier outbid everyone and then freed her. Discovering he was raised Romani just as she, she fell in love with him instantly.

The jealous Lord - who lost the auction- hired men to murder Ferka and his new bride Olena, so they fled to Turkey to seek sanctuary. There they met Marjhani and Hamzah. Recognizing their distress and deep rooted love for one another, Marjhani and Hamzah allowed them safe haven, deeming then family. In order to hide themslevs from the jealous Lord, they donned the dress of the Tribe and adopted their customs.
First off please note Oojahm underwent a name change!!! The letter "h" has been added in to aid in pronunciation.

Second, The Marhaba tribe will be incorporated into the tribe to add double the flavor double the fun this year!!!

Camping is still in negotiations and we will let you know as soon as there is any definite information.
Faire dates are April 7- May 20. EVERYONE will be required to participate in workshops(RAPA) this season. Workshops have been revised and will be tailored to our needs as an entertainment group. Please let me know if there are any suggestions to help us better entertain our audience.
Here are the Pre-Party Details as they stand:
Location: World Rhythm & Motion Studio (where the workshops are that day)
150 South St., San Luis Obispo
Corner of South & Parker St. Part of the Greyhound Station Building
Time: 8pm - performances starting at 8:30pmish
Cost: $3-5 donation suggested
What to bring: Your own alcohol, there will be other drinks and snacks/food provided. And it is a potluck also, but really for those traveling from nearby as logistically it is too hard for others coming from out of town.
Important: Do not park in Greyhounds parking lot.!!!

It will be a little more formalized than last year with scheduled performances (mostly by those who are on the waiting list for Sunday), and DJ Amar and hopefully some musicians that may be willing to play will be there again. We would love to see you there where you will be able to see some performances, hang out with friends, and even groove some on the dance floor or stage. For those that haven't been to the studio before, it is also used as a small theater for things like Rocky Horror Picture Show and plays, etc., so it is a fun industrial space.

There is time for more performances, so if you have something you want to debut, share again, etc. this is a great venue for it!

In Ariellah’s workshop, you will fine tune, drill, and discuss chest isolations, pops, locks and snake-like gothic belly dance arm movements. The class will touch upon the darker side of belly dance, learning how to slow down and bring control to the movements. Students will learn a short choreography, which will incorporate these techniques. Reinforcing fundamentals will bring strength and fluidity to the student’s movements and elevate their dance.

Bio
Ariellah performs tribal fusion and gothic belly dance all over the bay area and the United States. She was most recently featured on the first of its kind, Gothic Belly Dance DVD. She has studied and performed belly dance for the past five years, both with Janine Ryle of Danse Mahgreb and Rachel Brice of The Indigo. She also teaches and performs solo. Her strong, sensual, and dark interpretation of tribal fusion belly dance incorporates a range of styles – from American tribal and cabaret to folkloric – yet stays true to her own unique aesthetic.
