&lt;br/&gt;believing in causes she doesn’t understand
&lt;br/&gt;supporting whatever seems best at the time
&lt;br/&gt;and neglecting the rest with the best of intentions
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;try to talk to her
&lt;br/&gt;try to reach the woman inside 
&lt;br/&gt;listen for anything real
&lt;br/&gt;but know that she can’t hear you
&lt;br/&gt;unless you are repeating the party line 
&lt;br/&gt;unless you can be as disillusioned and bitter as she pretends to be&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;br/&gt;gusts of wind that carry me away
&lt;br/&gt;lift me up above the flutter, the twittering, the chirping beaks
&lt;br/&gt;that want the food i didn’t bring

&lt;br/&gt;a little bird can’t go far
&lt;br/&gt;but i have survived this impossible flight
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;i can’t come back to this messy nest i made
&lt;br/&gt;too soft, too nice, too light
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;feathery, thin
&lt;br/&gt;no substance to it
&lt;br/&gt;a home, a nest,...
&lt;br/&gt;a cage would be better if only because it will last
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;i always had problems with home
&lt;br/&gt;i guess i knew i’d somehow lose them
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;a little bird with wings

&lt;br/&gt;		gets under my skin
&lt;br/&gt;			threatening the day into BEGINning
&lt;br/&gt;	cold outside and i can’t be in it
&lt;br/&gt;		i have to leave the room i know 
&lt;br/&gt;		for a cage with wall-to-wall animals and excrement
&lt;br/&gt;			waste everywhere--wasted waste of time 
&lt;br/&gt;  of energy, of potential, of everything worth saving or collecting or having or being
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;i hate the clock above my head
&lt;br/&gt;	determining when i stay or go
&lt;br/&gt;		even if it’s fast or slow,
&lt;br/&gt; the truth is there
&lt;br/&gt;	ticking like a bomb set off by a switch that’s too easy to set off
&lt;br/&gt;		the littlest thing 
&lt;br/&gt;			--a flea
&lt;br/&gt;			--a tic
&lt;br/&gt;			--a heartbeat
&lt;br/&gt;		could do it
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;i hate to come home and put on “THE SMILE”
&lt;br/&gt;	to play the part
&lt;br/&gt;		since you’ve no desire to know the actor
&lt;br/&gt;			just the character
&lt;br/&gt;			you created for me
&lt;br/&gt;	to satisfy and be left wanting
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;i hate everything today
&lt;br/&gt;	especially 
&lt;br/&gt;		the hate
&lt;br/&gt;		and especially
&lt;br/&gt;		...tomorrow.&lt;/div&gt;
