things are just getting ridiculous.
being that many a folk in the open mic crew has likely used a guitar tab before (hell, i don't even play + i have!), i'd love to hear thoughts on this matter.

Song sites face legal crackdown

By Ian Youngs
BBC News entertainment reporter

The music industry is to extend its copyright war by taking legal action against websites offering unlicensed song scores and lyrics.

The US Music Publishers' Association (MPA), which represents sheet music companies, will launch its first campaign against such sites in 2006.

MPA president Lauren Keiser said he wanted site owners to be jailed.

He said unlicensed guitar tabs and song scores were widely available on the internet but were "completely illegal".

Mr Keiser said he did not just want to shut websites and impose fines, saying if authorities can "throw in some jail time I think we'll be a little more effective".

The move comes after several years of bitter legal battles against unauthorised services allowing users to download recordings for free.

Publishing companies have taken action against websites in the past, but this will be the first co-ordinated legal campaign by the MPA.

The MPA would target "very big sites that people would think are legitimate and very, very popular", Mr Keiser said.

"The Xerox machine was the big usurper of our potential income," he said. "But now the internet is taking more of a bite out of sheet music and printed music sales so we're taking a more proactive stance."

David Israelite, president of the National Music Publishers' Association, added his concerns.

"Unauthorised use of lyrics and tablature deprives the songwriter of the ability to make a living, and is no different than stealing," he said.

"Music publishers and songwriters will consider all tools under the law to stop this illegal behaviour."

Sandro del Greco, who runs Tabhall.co.uk, said the issue was not serious enough to warrant jail time and sites like his were not necessarily depriving publishers of income.

"I play the drums mainly but I play the guitar as well. I run the website and I still buy the [tab] books," he said.

"The tabs online aren't deadly accurate so if someone really wants to know it they'll buy the book.

"But most of the bands I listen to don't have tab books to buy so if you get them online, that's the only way you can really learn it unless you work it out yourself."

The campaign comes after lyric-finding software PearLyrics was forced off the internet by a leading music publishing company, Warner Chappell.

PearLyrics worked with Apple's iTunes, searching the internet to find lyrics for songs in a user's collection.

"I just don't see why PearLyrics should infringe the copyright of Warner Chappell because all I'm doing is searching publicly-available websites," PearLyrics developer Walter Ritter said.

"It would be different if they had an alternative service that also provided lyrics online and also integrated [with iTunes] like PearLyrics did. But they don't offer anything like that at all."

A Warner Chappell statement said the company wanted to ensure songwriters were "fairly compensated for their works and that legitimate sites with accurate lyrics are not undermined by unlicensed sites".

"We have requested that PearWorks provide us with information regarding the sources of their lyrics, and have further asked that they discontinue the service if these sources are operating without a licence."
I've had to do it a few times and it can be a lot of pressure but Kevin is by far the most bias and unfair MC they've ever had. He picks his friends, cute girls, and people who suck up to him first to play. Last night I got to the mic at 9:00 and told Kev that I'd like to get out early this time cause the last few times we ended up closing out when everyone had already left. Malcolm and I had some new matierial and just wanted to test it out. The list was filled with names of people that weren't there and We only got on for around 11:00. Fair enough, but through the night people came in and played without even signing up and we got forgotten. We could have just gone down to Logans if we knew we weren't getting on the mic but Kev kept assuring us we would be next. We didn't even play. I roped a bunch of friends to come hear our new tunes and they ended up sitting around the whole night waiting without a payoff. Kevin is unfair and prejudice. I know that sometimes you have to alter the list but that was ridiculous! Has anyone else had any similar experiances or heard word of Kev's debauchery?

I found this on the Victoria Bluegrass Association site and I think it's just fantastic...

Jam Etiquette

Before joining an existing jam, listen to a tune or two in the background. Join in if you think you can keep up. If not, play quietly in the background.

Ensure that your instrument is in tune. If you're new to digital tuners, be aware that they should be calibrated to A 440.

The purpose of jamming is to make music and have fun. It is not to play as loud as you can, as fast as you can, or to show off how good a player you are. Listen to others in the jam, and make sure you blend into the music and/or singing.

Don't practise your break (solo) in the jam circle. If you're playing the melody when it's someone else's turn to take a break or when someone's singing, you're stepping on toes.

Don't hog the jam. Give everyone a chance to play. Be supportive.

When it's your turn to pick a tune, let everyone know the name of the tune, the key, the form (if it's an instrumental) and if there are any odd or unusual chord progressions, timing or rhythm issues. It's best and most rewarding to do tunes in generally accepted keys. Songs, however, are usually done in the key selected by the singer. But, this being said, it’s best to pick a key and tempo that suits the tune and the abilities of the other jam participants.

If capos are being put on or taken off between tunes, wait a few seconds for people to recheck their tuning.

If you don't want to take a break on a particular tune, make it obvious, such as by stepping back out of the circle, and letting the person on your left know. No one wants to start their break half way through.

If you can't hear a break or the words of a song, you are playing too loudly. Tone is every bit as important as volume. If the volume is getting "up there" on a particular tune, don't play. Work on your harmony singing or listening skills.

Listen for the rhythm of the tune or song, get in the groove AND STICK WITH IT. If you find you're not in good time, stop playing for a beat or two until you feel the rhythm again. It is next to impossible to pick up the rhythm again, without stopping first.

Don't have your eyes glued to your instrument. Look around, communicate with your eyes and body. A lot of communication in a jam is very subtle and you need to be alert to catch the signals.

Listen, listen, listen. Listen to the bass and the room as a whole. Don’t just listen to your neighbours because they may be leading you astray.

Although you don't put much on the line singing other peoples tunes, you can sure get people to sing along and jump around. Last night I was moved by a courageous performance. One of our tribe members put her head down and belted out a doozying original and I was extremely impressed. As the heart of this musician was being sung out so expressivly, I noticed people giggling, talking, writing, wandering and generally not paying much mind to her. I'm guilty of this as well, but where's the line. I remember Stephen going up to play some originals once and the crowd was so flakey that he was visibly upset on the stage. He wanted some respect and he fully deserved it but the audience is unforgiving sometimes. I guess this is why I just plug away at poppy Beatles or Strokes tunes. I'd like to play originals but I doubt anyone would notice. Do you guys usually play originals? How do you choose what to play? Are we frowned upon by serious musicians if we only play covers?
