i know it seems early, folks, but in reality, things usually get started around february...
i want to really step it up this year, as crimson is constantly pushing us to break all boundaries with our fire performance around the man.
i'm thinking a high level of collaboration, top-notch spinning and lots of creativity. i'm tired (as i'm sure you are) of the classic choreography we've all seen around- changes on 4 or 8, simple group movements. let's leave everything we've done before behind, and really ramp up for this year's burn.
questions? ideas? please post them here, let's start a conversation about what we'd like to see...
i'll start: who likes the idea of wearing cheerleading outfits, waving flaming pom poms, and building 5-high pyramids while we chant "go usa!"?
burning brightly & flying high,
shireen

Re: this year's conclave
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 10:00 AMHehehe... I think that..... If we do that we should have a LONG chaos period afterwards...... And that maybe we should burn the cheerleading outfits, too....

Mon, January 14, 2008 - 10:28 AMI look great in a cheerleader skirt!
I would like to work on passing throws between 2-3 people. Shelley & I have played with this a bit.

Re: this year's conclave
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 11:36 AMyou forgot about the flaming happy meals
I really want to ramp things up too, lets put on some shows!!!
pyramids, tumbling, acro, (not that I can currently do any of these things)
We know our audience, what do they want to see? what is going to keep them engaged?
I think of lots o movement, big fire, presentation, humor, the perception of danger, really really tight choreography, what else?
I can't really think of anything that fits the theme that isn't negative. So here is to chaotic thought processes!
Drum corps with flaming rifles? Clogging? Polka? Ballroom dancing? world dance sampler? burning dollar bills? simulated battle field? re-creation of historic event? cowboys and indians? the jetsons? black tie cocktail party? westside story style dance off? robots? square dance? rodeo clowns and flaming bulls? business suits and briefcases? Ok there are a few. (i love brainstorming).
Justin, I like the idea of more tosses and juggling, anything to keep the fire moving and get it up in the air, it's one of those things that is really hard to get clean though.
go usa!

Re: this year's conclave
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 12:24 PMblack tie cocktail party? business suits and briefcases? ... i think those are some hilarious ideas
-imagine a bunch of people with briefcases (which hold soaked tools) walk out, pop their suitcases and get going
rodeo clowns and flaming bulls?
-how about flaming lasso?
pyramids, tumbling, acro, (not that I can currently do any of these things)
-cheerleaders sounds sick ... i love it ... and its amazing how much we can learn in a few months with some good practice
how much does flash paper get used?
maybe we should look at all of the things they expect, and just do the total opposite?
that can totally defy all expectations and be perfect
of course it can be to far off and totally suck ha ha

Re: this year's conclave
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 3:40 PMi love the idea of a west side story dance off-- maybe leather clad fetishist fire folks vs. cirque du soliel style "artistic" fire?
can you imagine us all dressed as coyboys & girls? i freakin' love it! do you think the drummers could hang with that theme?
really, tho, i'm looking for more of the "perception of danger, really really tight choreography" ideas...this is where we need to go- if we start soon, we will kick some flaming butt by the time we get to the playa.
i'm also assuming we'd have numerous shows on the playa besides the burn to show off our stuff...

Re: this year's conclave
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 8:19 PMMaybe... we could be cheerleaders with flaming pom poms n' then have a giant flaming McDonalds M come out n' then blow it up? Perception of danger.... Maybe I'm not so helpful on this topic today.... -

Re: this year's conclave
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 8:43 PMjordan and i had the same cheerleader idea a couple years back. black rock high... we even came up with some cheers and a couple moves. maybe we could do grease that has the west side story themes and cheerleaders.
i've been wanting to get into acrofire for a while and seeing that im planning on moving to PDX by the spring !!!!!! lets make this happen get together weekley and practice some new moves.
i just heard about portable strip poles that come in a breif case just a thought. i've seen some fire pole routines they were pretty hot. is it too soon to ask when the first meeting is gonna be ... -

Re: this year's conclave
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 9:41 AMso awesome that you are moving to portland, tho that means we don't have a leader for ashland anymore (anyone in that area that's listening in, please get in touch!)!!!
let's say the first meeting is on sunday, feb. 17, there's a fire jam that nite as incentive for folks to come in from out of town...4 pm? suggestions for where we should meet?
yes acro, yes stilts, yes big fire, yes tight choreography, why the hell not throw in a portable dance pole as well???
keep those ideas coming!

Re: this year's conclave
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 1:53 PMMichelle, I love you! You're brilliant!
That said, I'd love to be able to bring some of my non-fire skills out this year and make them with-fire skills... (Michelle and I had talked about trying to do an ATS belly dance thing w/ fire fans, but IMHO, that's a start of the show idea...) I can still do some basic tumbling. It's been years since I was part of a pyramid, but I could be down for that as well.
I love the idea of a west side story style dance off. And the business suits/briefcases idea is totally hilarious! We could combine the two ideas... Senate vs. House of Reps.? That might be a bit too esoteric...

Re: this year's conclave
Fri, January 18, 2008 - 5:16 PMSince you folks are on the topic of cheer learders burning dollar bills, micky d's and the Amerinca dream. It would be funny (to me) to have perfomers come running out in football uniforms ripping through a dollar bill banner flipping and jumping. Then forming a 3 + person pyramid creating a Statue of Liberty where the flame can start/continue from. Ronald McDonald mascots start fighting the Burger King or Wendy mascots, but then Jack comes in and blows them all up with his "flame broiler" thrower. Sorry if thats too morbid, but hey I'm American...F*&^ Yeah!
....has this been done before? Oh well still funny to me.
Have fun creating!

Re: this year's conclave
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 12:46 PMas great as it would be to create some kind of americana farce political statement i think that one thing many people are overlooking is the positive side of the "american dream" theme.
i think more of the intention for this year is to look at our country in the whole spectrum of light and dark. to confront the things that we have helped create in this society and look into ourselves and decide how we want to change this. what we as individuals can do to actually make change in the system.
instead of just making fun of the icons of america that we so much despise why not acknowlede some american icons that have made change and inspire us. i think those of us that despise so much of our country often forget some of the amazing expression that has been created on american soil. jazz for example, blues , burningman.
right now in the world there is this strange duality of people hating our country but also being completly obsessed with our culture. we have a massive influence in the world with the trends and pop culture we create. i think we are living in an exciting time to shitft paradigms and start really forming our society into something that we can actually relate to as the american dream. the traditional sense of the american dream hasn't existed for a while but we do live in a land of opportunity and from that we do have the freedom to create a life that we belive is worth living.
we all come out to the playa to experiance how we would like to live for one week out of the year then we go back to our jobs our lives and once in a while those nostalgic burningman memories seep in and help us through our day. i dont know what it is or how it is going to be created but thats why we are all here together to build the new dream we are already just starting to live.
i know alot of people are really dissapointed about this years theme because they dont want to be bombarded with red white and blue and overwhelming amounts of anti political/ corporate satire.
i think there is room for all this within a performance, humor ,satire ,inspiration sick new tricks daring acrobatics and new begginings.
if anyone hasn't read the statement for this years theme on the burningman website i strongly encourage you to

Re: this year's conclave
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 3:11 PMwell said.
while i have been enjoying the off-the-wall ideas we've been bandying about, i have to say i'm more interested in creating a challenging work than sticking to burning man's theme.
justin had the idea of tossing staves- thoughts on ways to make this interesting?
people want to include partner/group balances, acro, gymnastics, dance, other movements- yes! let's talk about how this can happen...
stilts? giant flaming jump ropes? partner work with multiple tools/groups?
what haven't we thought of yet?

Re: this year's conclave
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 3:52 PMI agree with you Rachel. There is good and bad and incredible potential.
I was just throwing out whatever popped into my head, it was not my intent to say we should have a slam fest on america or this years theme, just encourage others to come up with ideas. I would really prefer not to be constrained by the theme but instead try to make a kick ass show.
Let's keep throwing around ideas, good, bad, impossible, silly; I want to keep this creative process rolling. Sometimes you have to crack open a lot of rocks to find a gem.

Re: this year's conclave
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 4:24 PMyeah, crack rocks......errrr...I mean crack open those rocks, go Mashell.
I like the idea of using stilts and having a multi- dimensional field of play. We can have fire on the ground but also be able to bring it higher up to the TALL people. Flaming jump ropes are fun, but we can't really do a whole lot with them. What about flaming stilter jump rope with groundlings also jumping their own flaming jump rope while leaping over the big one as well.
I see flaming triangles being put together by the tall ones to create some sort of octogonal/tetrahedron / geometric anomaly.
i like the idea of incorporating more tosses and keeping the fire flying all around.
Bouncy stilts and flaming hopscotch anyone?
very long fire snakes for stilter poi? I'm talking flames to the ground!
i do like flaming pom poms, thats fun, can we toss each other in the air with them?
hmmmmmm........ -

Re: this year's conclave
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 5:09 PMI love that you guys have the creative juices flowing so freely and so early. Jim and I will not be attending Burningman this year, but if you are interested in still having drumers I know a fabulous drummer that went to Burningman last year (didn't know he was going or I would have recruited him last year) He may be interested in heading up the drum corps, has great ideas and is a much better drummer than I. He is not only trained in traditional West African style but does a lot of freestyle drumming and writes his own music too. I think you would all like him. So if that sounds acceptable to you all, I would love to be able to turn the reins over to him this year.
