Gnu to Fire Dance

Hi. I attended my first burn back in August. Saw a bunch of fire dances performed at Shiva Platform and fell in love with the art. Ordered poi as soon as I got back to PDX. I've been practicing for a few months and I can adequately perform all the basics. What I am looking for is a local practice session. I believe there is a Sunday meeting at Salmon on the Esplanade but nothing on the internet indicates what time people get together. When/where are the local practices or informal shows?

Also, I already have my ticket to go to the 2008 burn and I'd like to be part of a group that's going down there. Would appreciate it if someone would drop me an email with info about practices.

    hi rick,

i'd suggest you get on the portland/oregon fire performers tribe, this one is for people who are working on choreography for the conclave. there is no more room in this year's conclave.

the fire jams are down at the end of salmon st, mostly on the 1st & 3rd sundays of the month, but there's also smaller gatherings on other sundays too, from what i hear. if you go, bring all your gear, including fire safety equipment.

if you want a non-fire place to play, there is a by donation spin jam on sundays from 4-7 at the building on the corner of mississippi & interstate.

have fun, be safe and good luck!

    burning brightly & flying high,

Shireen - Thanks for the reply! What time are the sessions down on Salmon Street? (I don't want to arrive there and wind up waiting for hours. Or, worse yet, have nobody else show.)

And, if the local conclave is full, are there any other ways to get onto a performance team in BRC? I know that several shows invited people from the audience to perform; but, to tell the truth, I'd rather be one of many than a solo act.

      Thanks again.

ps. How do I get in touch with the performer's tribe? And, if there are no vacancies, what does the waiting list look like? (I can be counted on to make practices, if they are in the evenings.)

the fire jam is now shut down, so don't plan on going there to light up on sundays.

there is tons of fire dancing at burning man, as i'm sure you saw last year. my suggestion is to do some research, join a few other tribes related to fire and figure out where you'd best fit in.

if you want to be in a conclave, you need to contact the shin (leader) in jan/feb.

        good luck.
