i'm of 2 minds about this...
can we have our annual meeting online here on tribe, or should we actually try to get together in the same place at the same time?
i need an idea of:
who's interested
who's performed with us/in the circle before
what tools we're talking about
how you specifically are planning something new, interesting, difficult, challenging, etc
where folks live, who they want to work with
how busy your summer is in terms of rehearsals & burn-thrus
we are raising the bar, pushing limits this year. if you're planning on showing up & doing what you've always done, that won't cut it anymore.
we are also talking about putting together a show that will be performed on the playa at least once outside of the night of the burn.
if we do decide to meet up, i'd like to do it sunday, feb. 17. there's a fire jam that nite as incentive for folks to come in from out of town...4 pm? suggestions for where we should meet?
i'm sending a message to last year's conclave by email to encourage people to join us in the discussion here. sorry if you get things multiple times for a little while, i try to do that as little as possible.
talk to me!
burning brightly & flying high,
shireen

Re: conclave meet-up
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 4:59 PMHi Shireen- I think face to face is always better- it gets people motivated to discuss more online if we do it first in person.
I'm really not sure what I wanna do this year- I'm open to fully embracing wherever this process leaves me this year- I have no tool preference for once. Just whatever I can use safely...
And, for a totally off subject moment, that wedding dress you found for me at the bins is turning into some stuff I'm pretty stoked about... Thanx

Re: conclave meet-up
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 3:19 PMHey there
I love to get together and talk shop, and the 17th works great for me. I don't have much preference about the time.
I am curious about those who live further away
(I am talking to you Bend, Ashland, K Falls, Medford, you get the drift)
Everyone who is talented, dedicated, and willing to create an awesome performance, should speak up!! There are a lot of talented people out there all over this state and we should hear your voice. Don't assume that because you don't live in the portland area you can't participate (although in my experience it is more of a challenge).
I feel like I have been doing the same choreography for the last five years and really want to do something different, but like Lia I am not really sure what I do want to do, and am willing to do whatever is needed.
I have done Poi every year and would prefer to avoid it this year unless it is a super tight tech choreography. I would enjoy doing another double staff piece with more shape making, passes, and two person weaves. Maybe something contacty or something with fans (I ordered my collapsible fans last week and am working on a full TaiJi form) I would love to learn some acro or stilting, or maybe something I have never even imagined.
I have been a part of the Salem group for that last couple of years by default but I would definitely travel to work on something I am really excited about.
as for availability the summer is usually really busy for me but I am willing to put in really long practice sessions to make up for having them less often. I'll from the top? til my arms fall off.
If we have a meeting on the 17th I will be there!!

Re: conclave meet-up
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 11:22 AMsounds like most folks are voting for meeting in person, which is excellent.
shall we meet in salem? i know that's hard for folks in portland, but it makes it easier for people from bend, salem, eugene & points beyond.
we can carpool to/from portland, in our short bus, if needed.
can someone from that area suggest a time/location (with directions) for us to meet on the 17th?
here's what i think about folks who can't/won't /don't make it to the meeting...you can still be involved in the conclave, but you are abdicating your say in what our focus is going to be. so, if you come to the meeting, you can put in your 2 cents about what/how we do the show. if you don't, you get to be as creative as possible in the framework we come up with in the meeting.
btw, i had some visions that got me all excited the other day...regarding a way to make a group choreography that allows everyone to shine with their tools & talents but also creates unity in the group. i've never seen anyone do what i'm thinking of in performance, so that makes me happy too.

Re: conclave meet-up
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 9:36 PMI also like the idea of meeting in Salem. Seems like a more central place for Oregon.
I'm excited to hear your ideas Shireen.......and everybody else's too!

Re: conclave meet-up
Fri, February 1, 2008 - 10:38 PMHi everyone!
I can be there on the 17th. Wow, it is really that time again already? Exciting.. The idea of a cohesive piece we can perform on the playa in addition to the great circle sounds great to me. I would really like to incorporate some body balancing elements. Use of levels to create a fire body sculpture that we can hold and morph into new sculpture and hold again etc. is one idea that I've been pondering. I am open to using staff, poi, palm torches, whatever is called for in the piece works for me. Those interested in carpooling from Portland to Salem, let me know.
This will be fun to put our heads together and see where it leads. -

Re: conclave meet-up
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 7:21 PMI was just waiting for a verdict before I chimed in
We can meet at my house, I think there is enough room. The S McMennamins has a back room that can be reserved and our friend Jen is the brewer there. There are probably a coffee shop or two that would work but it has been many years since I spent much time in any of them.
Let me know what ya'll prefer and I can figure it out.

Re: conclave meet-up
Tue, February 5, 2008 - 11:19 AMHello
I just got off the phone with thompsons and we have the room reserved.
They ask that there are going to be at least 15 of us to reserve the whole room otherwise they will just reserve part of it. I told her that I would call back if we were going to be a smaller group than that.
shireen, any idea about numbers?
can't wait to see you all!
