Fire Dancing Cane

I was on a website the other day and I saw a fire version of a dancing cane.
I have already cleared my history in my browser and I can't find the website again.

Anyone know of the website that makes and sells these?

I saw that too. Shouldn't be difficult to make. I have been thinking about doing a routine with tap dancing fire shoes, cane and flammable stage for years but haven't put it all together. You can get a good quality cane at most drug stores then it;s just a matter of wrapping the end in kevlar and lighting that puppy up. Flaming Fred Astaire. There is some great cane work in the very old movie called top hat, and some of the charlie chaplin films.

Whoa, you are talking more than just a cane on fire. I just saw the video the other day of the magical dancing cane. I have been trying to construct one after finally figuring out how the string worked. It is difficult to get the balance just right and I haven't really succeeded yet. There is a thread about all of this with a link on the fire videos tribe. I'll keep you posted if I figure this out. There is a place in Europe that sells these but they want $60 bucks with shipping. I think we can figure it out more cheaply. If anyone knowss how best to make these , let us know as I am all about incorporating this into the act.

Mine seems to flop around rather than stay perpendicular to the ground. Did you drill a hole for the string? I understand basically how it works I think. Do I just need more practice or find a better way to balance it>

You need to talk to Jaine, at Reed College. She does dancing cane and runs the fire club there.

Jaine? Are you gone for the summer yet?

If you can't find here in Tribe, I've got her address somewheres.

It would probably be worth the investment to get a floating wand from FlowToyz an see how the balance works and such.

There's a trick to making it work smoothly and I think they tell you that when you buy one.

Okay, after a few prototypes I got it figured out and it works amazingly. Blew away my fire troupe with its' debut. Basically take a wooden dowel and wrap the ends in metal tape or yur preferred method. The wood needs to be fairly light weight, The when you are all ready and it is done, (I only wrapped one end in kevlar because I wanted it to be more like a cane but you could have both ends flaming) find the balance point. You want to drill a hole just below that point. A good way to find where you drill the hole is to hold it between your fingers gingerly and move it back and forth. If the stick stays perpendicular to the ground you found it. Very important to drill a hole exactly in the middle. Now put some kevlar string (any other type of string will burn and break way easily, I have discovered) through the hole and tie the ends together. I have the loop long enough to reach pat the cane about four inches but am still experimenting with different lenghths. Now, go check out some You tube videos on magical dancing cane to see how it is supposed to work and all the tricks you can do with it. It take practice but I can now make the thing hop over my arm and move all around me. Much fun as well as a tool that amazes. I always get..."How the hell are you doing that?" Oh yeah, you will have to paint the kevlar string black so it won't be seen as easily.

Update-I debuted the "Magical Dancing Cane of Death at Transformous and a non fire version at the Seduction Sideshow Burlesque Theater last night, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Even the people who see the string still have no idea how it's done. I have been learning how to make the cane dance without very much movement of my arms and therefore it doesn't appear that I am the one in control. For example, I can grab my hat and duck and the cane will revolve around me making it appear that it is taunting me. Weird and fun.

There's a juggler here in Austin named Drew that works with multiple fire canes. His are short and hooked, with the fire at the un-hooked end. He does crazy stuff with them--poi moves (with two hooked together on each hand) and staff moves (two hooked together), and of course juggling moves.

His are homemade and not very durable. I get the impression that making something durable would be too heavy for his purposes.
