Ladies,
We are so happy to announce the new polynesian workshop with Laila taking place
June 2nd and 9th at 7:30 to 9:30 both nights. This workshop will feature two new full routines...one slow, sensual hula, and one drumsoloish tahitian. These choreographies will be approved for performance for our end of summer hafla/show at Karma Korner. Preregistration price is $40, with a $50 door price if there is space available. Yay!

This is the *almost finalized* summer schedule. I tried to give a lot of time options for everyone --its impossible to please everyone, but please know that I do my best! Please note also we will be having several workshops this summer including - Polynesian - **please note that the routines in this class will be different than the previous Polynesian workshop** (taught by Laila), Bollywood( Taught by Shainna), Burlesque, Exotic Fusion, Sword, and Samba (Taught by Laila), and possibly a repeat of Belda's special "creating a solo" workshop. Burlesque class

Hello ladies! I am interested in signing up for the 10:00 pm Burlesque class on Monday nights, but my husband is concerned about my personal safety in downtown Winter Park that late at night. Do the ladies usually walk each other to their cars after class? Has anyone had any problems? Any information would be welcome as I live about a half hour away and don't know what the area is like at that time of day. Not looking for problems, just trying to think ahead.

Auditions around the corner!

Hello Beautiful Dancers!

Orlando Bellydance will be holding its semi-annual auditions for dancers on May 23rd and 24th. (times TBD). We hope you'll share your talents with us!

We will be casting for members of:

*Gypsy Sa'har (authentic gypsy dance tribe focusing on the many regions that include "gypsy" dancing from Turkey to Spain)
*Orlando Dance Theatre- (Cabaret Style Bellydance and World Dances including bollywood, salsa, samba, hip hop and polynesian.) Professional dancers or dancers with a strong classical training background are encouraged to audition.
*Serpentina Dance Company- (Bellydance with a gothic flair as well as theatrical and experimental dance)
*Ahlaam Dancers- Cabaret Style Bellydance, sometimes with a modern twist.

All present dance company members will be asked to re-audition at this time.

We will also be casting for soloists hireable for paid dancing opportunities through our talent agency for restaurants, special events and conventions, as well as "sub" positions for our Tu Tu Tangos ensemble show.

What you need to audition: Please bring a resume documenting your training and performances as well as a photo of you in full costume/makeup. Dancers will be asked to perform a 3-4 minute solo of their choice, and may be asked to learn a short movement combination. Solo pieces will ONLY be viewed by Orlando Bellydance staff. If you are auditioning for more than one genre (i.e. polynesian and bellydance) please prepare a short example of each.

Dancers chosen must take at least one technique class per week, as well as attend all rehearsals.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns regarding auditions. I know it can seem intimidating to audition, but we do try to make it as warm of an environment as possible. The audition process is a great learning experience, even if you don't "make it" into a troupe. Detailed feedback on auditions can be provided confidentially upon request.

Remember....life is short..believe in yourself! You never know until you try!

Ladies, I had my photographer at the show and he took shots of all but the last two numbers. It seems he mostly focused on individuals and final poses, so there may be some great individual shots of you.

Have a look around and if there is anything you want a print of, you will find the pricing on there as well. He will retouch the photos if there are any flaws you would like fixed. Ladies, my photographer put up a few examples of the types of retouching he will do if you see one of your shots that you like. They are posted at the very end of the group shots. I opened two internet windows and compared the photos. They look great!

Time change for Level 3A celebration tomorrow night

Okay, we have a small glitch for tomorrow night. After playing phone tag with the restaurant for a few days, I finally spoke with them today and they have a party of 55 booked from 6-8PM. What are the chances?

Anyway, I figured it was better to change the time than the location in case someone didn't get the message at this late date so we're making it 8PM. Jill and I will still be there at 7:30 in case anyone shows up early. They think they'll be able to accommodate us in the bar if a few people get there early (which should make waiting more fun!)

Can't wait to see everyone tomorrow night! :)

Level 3A Ladies - Let's Celebrate!

Wow, our first show was so much fun! Let's get together and celebrate all our hard work. Now that we're not practicing our Boussa or Wanna, Wanna routines, how about meeting for tapas and drinks in our regular Wednesday night time slot (7:30) next week (May 7th, I think)? We'll be meeting at El Bodegon Tapas and Wine, which is just around the corner from the studio at 400 S. Orlando Ave. (17-92 between Fairbanks and Lee).

Yikes Stage Fright!!

One of the questions that always comes up is what to do about stage fright.
First let me assure you that it only lasts until you are standing on the stage and the music starts. Then your practice and excitement kick in and it all becomes a blur.
However to help you out before that moment, As you are lined up in the Wings:
1) Force your face to have a big smile, This will flex the muscles above your ears which will connect to the muscles over the top of your head and release the tension. It will also trigger a learned response in your brain saying "Gosh, if she is smiling I think there is no danger" so you will relax.
2) Tell yourself “ I am excited, not nervous” This is a clinically proven method from psychologists.
3) Shimmy in place while you are standing there. It will burn off nervous energy and same as above your "Fight or Flight" instinct will think you are in action and will quit thinking about what could be wrong.
4) Force yourself to breathe deeply and S l o w l y while you are smiling and shimmying. This will saturate your brain and blood with oxygen and you will release tension with each exhale.

Good Luck, I hope this helps. Just know that you have done your best to prepare, forgive yourself in advance for any errors, know that you are performing in a loving and supportive atmosphere!

Just so you can check your time. Remember this is the time you should be ready to step onstage, Not putting your stuff down or getting dressed. Plan to arrive 15-20 minutes before your time. You can see by the schedule that we will just have enought time for everyone once. IF you miss your blocking time there will be no do-overs. You will just need to get with your sister dancers to find out what was covered.

Pre Show Instructions !!

Our BIG day is almost here.
First please keep checking Tribe and listen in class for the time you will report to the Theater. The Blocking times are the time you are to be Standing on the Stage ready to Practice or Block as time permits. This is not the time that you should screeching into the parking lot.
OK more "fussing" ...like your mother I only tell you this stuff for your own good.
1) Please tie your hip scarf with the knot to the side (over your hip bone) rather than the front as we do for class. It looks prettier on stage and the ends of the scarf will amply your hip movements.
2) PIN EVERYTHING. Pin your scarf to your skirt. Even if you have a Belt with Hooks pin it together and pin to your skirt. Don't trust your Bra hooks to hold get someone to pin that for you as well. Baby diaper pins are big enough to get through all the layers and the safety head will not pop open and poke you. available at WalMart, Target and some Drug stores.
3) Pin anything that is on your head ( fake hair, scarves or jewelry) Barrettes that latch or the hair clips that are curved and snap shut hold better than bobby pins.
4) Put on all the makeup that you would for a party and then add twice as much. Stand across the room from the mirror to judge the effect. The distance and lights will make you look normal not like a hip scarf with a blank dot on the top. Also it will be several hours between applying your makeup and dancing, Bring Lipstick and blush for last minute application just before going onstage. If you do not have enough on I will make you use some of mine before you go on stage.
5) Please use lipstick that is RED or DARK ROSE for the same reason. Dark brown gets darker and you will look like Halloween and pale pink will be invisible. Again you want to look dramatic NOT natural. WalMart, Target and CVS all carry "Wet & Wild" Makeup as well as other brands that are only $1 or $2 per item.
6) You will be leaving the stage area to sit in the audience to watch the rest of the show. You will exit backstage and down the hall. Please only move in the audience while the curtain is closed and the MC is announcing the next act. You will need to be quick and quiet. Those around you may want to hear their loved ones announcement. Remember you must COVER your costume when not on stage as a courtesy to the dancers on the stage.
7) The side areas of the stage (wings) can be seen from some areas of the audience. Please stay well back while waiting. NO TALKING. I know you will be thrilled at the end of your number to have finished but you must celebrate and hug in mime and well out of the way of the next group that is trying to get on stage for their big moment.
8) Please leave your cell phones in the car unless you are a Medical professional on call. If you must bring your phone in put it silent mode. People with ringing cell phones will be beat about the head by irate audience members.
9) I know you have practiced enough so you can do your routine in your sleep....however if there is an oops then just SMILE AND KEEP MOVING. a sad face or stopping dead in place will let everyone else know your temporary lapse.
10) The most important thing is SMILE and HAVE FUN. You must enjoy dancing or you would have not devoted so much time and energy to get this far.
11) Lastly... When your friends and family tell you how great you were and how nice you look just Smile say Thank You! Do not tell them all the mistakes you think you made. Don't spoil their pride in you with negative things.
Thanks for letting me rant now go out there and have FUN!
12) Print your your ticket number on the video release at home and be ready to turn it in when you get on stage to block. I will have a box or bag onstage by my desk to drop them in. I will have a few extras but try to be organized and bring it with you.

Important!

Ladies!
Thank goodness a student pointed out that the tickets claim our show begins at 7:30. Because of this fact, we will need to start the show at 7:30. This means if you need to leave to eat/get ready, you will not need to be back at the theatre until 6:30, not 7.

Please share this info with friends/family. We will still begin seating at 6:30.

I think you might have thought I left, but I was in the dressing room helping a troupe member with her costume, so I didn't get your number. Attention SNAKECHARMER Master's Wed's Class; Costume Issues

Hi Ladies,

I'm not sure if anyone else has attempted to stuff and arrange their snake. I stuffed most of it today (actually got my hubby to do it..;o); I have ran into some issues though and I'm not sure if this will be across the board, or just me since I'm not savvy on costuming.

First, as I stuff, I notice that the material becomes less malleable making it difficult to twist it around our arms as initially thought.

Second, if we use a piece of elastic to bind it at the end to our middle finger, this will interfere with our zills; I tried doing that earlier and it's impossible to play the zills with the snake attached to our hands, or at least I found it that way. I then attempted to attach it to my wrist instead with a piece of elastic, but then the rope like stuffed material moves around.

Third, it's difficult to keep the stuffed material from moving while on the arm, and with our arm movements during the dance I'm afraid it may be a hinderance.

I'm wondering if we can figure out another way or another place to use it within the costume somehow. I'm not sure if anyone has run into any difficulty, and considering that the show is less than a week away I'm not sure if we can make any adjustments at this point.

The material is perfect and I would love to see it part of the costume, but I for one have no vision when it comes to things like that.

I'm not sure if anyone else has started theirs, and has attempted to wind it as we initially had spoken about, but I think it's important that we address any issues ASAP since our dress rehearsal is this week.

Info for Saturday Relay For Life

This event is at Showalter Field in Winter Park.
I have requested directions, but have not received them, nor have I received specific contact person info, which stresses me out a bit, especially since I can no longer attend due to emergency rehearsals for EU10.

We are set for an 8pm, with a calltime of 7:30. We will be allowed in the same dressing area as last year (inside the building.)

The cast has not given me their music yet, so a disc won't be ready until Sat. Is there anyone performing that can swing by and collect the music? I hate to not be there, but one of our troupe members has an injury and can no longer perform, so we have emergency rehearsals all weekend.

I'm sure we can make it work, though!

We need some help for the show on Sunday the 27th. We need someone with soundboardand/or DJ experience to supervise the sound booth and the students working there. The next position is for the curtain puller. This is a physical job opening and closing the curtain with the rope and pullies, however you have the best seat in the house to see the show. I also need some help early in the afternoon to get the stage ready.

Because our dear Tata is due to give birth any minute, we have hired another photographer to do our portraits for EU10. The fabulous Jesse Allen (husband to Jennifer Allen of Serpentina) will be doing dancer's portraits at the Orlando Bellydance Winter Park Studio from 4/15- 4/21. Discs will be $10 each (one "look" per disc, although dancers are welcome to as many discs as they have costumes...hehehe!) Each disc will hold a minimum of 5 professional portraits. Will post the dates and times on separate posts, so we can have the sign-ups underneath them. Payment is due at the time of the sitting. I will check to see if he accepts checks, or cash only.

IMPORTANT! Saturday 4/12 Information

OK the address for this Saturday's show is:
1010 Sand Lake Rd, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714
This Sand Lake is off SR-434. (not the one by the airport)
Once on Sand Lake Road the school is on the left (the 2nd street light)
The school is FOREST CITY ELEMENTARY, There is a Gym there for changing, but I would come mostly dressed with your cover up over. I do not know what the "stage" will be so I strongly suggest you plan on dancing in some kind of dance shoe or slipper or sandle ( Practice first!!) The surface is likely to be rough or uneven so do not take a chance.
Please plan on checking in with me by 8:30 AM. That way we can be ready early if need be or all set and relaxed at 9am scheduled time. I know it is early but we can all go for coffee after. 1-8 4 omis turning to face audience (back row omi & turn L, front row to the R)

1-4 Backward fig. 8, start on R (back row start on L) with arms
5-8 circle with arms palms out (front circle to R, back circle to L)
Repeat above in the opposite direction
Cross front-ball change, cha-cha-cha, repeat opposite direction (front row cross to L (bathroom) first, back row cross to R (window) first)

1-8 Ghawazee shimmy (Rita's "fat girl shimmy") to R (not sure about direction for back row here)
step fwd on R foot R arm "presenting" to the front -- soft knees, loose, let it jiggle
step back on R foot R arm out to the side
cross left foot over and full spin to R (end facing front again) R arm does full circle sweep, end with R arm out, palm up
Repeat to the left

1-4 Typewriter x 4 to R, scoop arms up & to the R (back row goes L)
5-8 Typewriter to the L same way (back row goes R)

1-3 3 steps forward RLR hands on hips, on
4 step fwd on L and hop, bring R knee up, R foot by L knee, arms up in U (release arms from hips on 3)
5-7 3 steps back LRL, on
8 hop, right knee up, keep hands on hips, body leans forward a bit

1-8 chassez RLR, LRL etc x 4 and form a circle facing inward. Arms up hands wave in direction of leading foot

1-8 grapevine R around the circle (step out on R then cross back, out then cross front, head turns profile LRLR with each cross)
1-8 chassez around circle, same arms, lead R foot
1-8 repeat grapevine
1-4 repeat forward 3-step hop combo moving to the center of the circle
5-8 repeat bkwd 3 step hop combo moving back out

1 pivot to face out of the circle, arms up "praising" face lifted up (arms must hit on 1, body can follow)

I have been going round in circles with this hip issue. Chiropractor, glucosamine, chondroitin, treatments and we will see therapy.
Suspira, I won't be able to make the show with this uncertainty. I waited as long as I could to see if the hip would get stronger by now.

Hey girls, I'm going to be working on the costumes a lot during this coming week and I want to let you ladies know in advance that you are welcomed to stop by my apartment and help out. I live in Oviedo and some of the girls in class agreed to meet up on Wednesday at 5:00 or earlier before class. I can also do Tuesday after 4:00 until whenever. UCF Tonight!

Info for Cancer Benefit at UCF this Friday

Since it is after 7pm, parking is not an issue. But the best place to park is in Garage D. Coming from University Blvd, instead of going straight into the campus make a left on Alafaya. Continue north until the second light (there's a BP Gas station on the left and and UCF billboard on the right) and turn right and continue north. As you pass the UCF Arena there is a light before a parking garage, make a right there and park. One of their team members will be there to meet us and to take to the apartment where you can change and then lead you to the track fields. Since I am already performing at a student's wedding, there is no way I can be there. I will need someone to be in "charge" at the event. Is there anyone willing?

The event is being held on the UCF campus track field. They'll have a place for you guys to change in A.C. I'm sure bringing guests is not an issue. The actual event time is at 10:00pm, but I think getting there around 9:30-9:45ish is a good idea.

I have the contact info of the stage manager to give to whomever will be in charge at the event. I will post a lineup later today for everyone to check---we are just working out some details from the Gypsy Sa'har cast.
