Proposed removal of the Orthodox in South Africa tribe

I propose to remove this "tribe" from Tribe.net, since it doesn't seem to be serving any useful purpose.

I seem to be the only one who has posted any reports on it, and it has been suggested that this makes it look as though I am the only one doing anything, so I will post no more reports of happenings in future.

So unless someone else volunteers to take over as moderator, and others post reports, there will be nothing more to see here, and so there will be no purpose in continuing.

If anyone would like to see it continue, please post a nomination for moderator, or volunteer as moderator yourself.

The weekend of 7-10 December was a historic occasion for Orthodoxy in Southern Africa, with the first diocecan youth conference for the Archdiocese of Johannesburg and Pretoria, and the first monastic tonsuring of a South African monk to take place in South Africa, when the novice Brother Matthew was tonsured as the Monk Seraphim, and was ordained deacon.

Hours and Readers Service at Sunninghill Park

Today we went to St Thomas's Serbian Orthodox Church in Sunninghill Park for the Hours and Readers Service, which we are doing, with the blessing of Archbishop Seraphim, on alternate Sundays while the priests, Fr Pantelejmon and Fr Spyridon, are away.

The first time we went, a fortnight ago, we fetched Margaret Mphela and her children from Klipfontein View. They are part of our much-diminished Tembisa mission congregation. Unfortunately we couldn't take anyone else, because since our Toyota Venture was stolen, we don't have room in our small car. We sang the service in English, and three members of St Thomas's were there with us, making nine altogether.

Today Margaret phoned to say that she couldn't come -- she has a new job, and was on night shift. So Val and I were the only ones there to sing. But this time there were more local parishioners from St Thomas's, and the number attending had doubled to 18.

Once again we sang the service in English, but the middle psalm in the Third and Sixth Hours was read in Serbian (actually I think it was Slavonic).

There were some people there that we had not seen before. Perhaps they were occasional attenders, but a few looked like Chinese or Japanese, and may have been first-time visitors. Unfortunately by the time we got out of the church after the end of the service they had gone, so we did not get a chance to talk to them. But if they were first-time visitors, it shows the importance of keeping the church open for Sunday services even if the priests are not there, and it is not possible to have the Divine Liturgy. Perhaps by the time Fr Pantelejmon gets back, there will be some people in the parish who will at least be able to read the Hours, if not sing the Obednitsa (Typika, Reader's Service).

HEALTH CRISIS IN ZIMBABWE SPOTLIGHTED THROUGH $1.5 MILLION GIFT OF
CRITICALLY NEEDED MEDICINES AND MEDICAL EQUIPMENT

IOCC expands its outreach to Africa through aid that will assist 30,000
individuals

Baltimore, Md. (IOCC) - Skyrocketing inflation and deteriorating
social conditions have made it impossible for hundreds of thousands of
Zimbabweans to receive adequate medical care. International Orthodox
Christian Charities’ recent $1.5 million shipment of hospital supplies,
medical equipment and critically-needed medicines will begin to address
this critical need. The shipment to Zimbabwe also represents IOCC’s
expansion of its Gift in Kind outreach and activities in Africa.

The supplies, which will help an estimated 30,000 individuals, include
hospital consumables, surgical instruments, lab supplies and broad
spectrum antiobiotics used to treat AIDS and other infectious diseases.
The supplies arrived on July 1 at the Luisa Guidotti Hospital in Motoko,
and will be distributed to three other medical centers: St. Michael's
Mission Hospital in Ngezi, the G. Spagnolli Health Centre for Health and
Promotion of Women in Harare, and Nyamayaro Health Centre in Chinhoyi.

"There are very few well functioning hospitals in Zimbabwe," said IOCC
Consultant, Frank Carlin. "Individuals travel as far as 180 kilometers
to receive medical help at Luisa Guidotti," he said. Dr. Carlo
Spagnolli, head surgeon and medical director of Luisa Guidotti, offered
his thanks to IOCC: "Blessed be you and the friends of the Orthodox
Church in [the] USA for all these precious cartons of medicines and
[equipment]. Zimbabwe is among the poorest and most fragile of countries
in Africa, and we are grateful for this help."

The acquisition of the supplies and their transport was made possible
through a grant from Roberto Bazzoni Onlus, a non profit association
based in Italy. Northwest Medical Teams International provided the
supplies.

"This shipment represents IOCC's commitment to expanding our programs in
Africa and to providing special assistance to rural populations," said
IOCC Executive Director and CEO, Constantine M. Triantafilou. "Although
this is our first project in Zimbabwe, we look forward to future
collaborations with His Eminence Metropolitan George of Zimbabwe, who
operates a medical clinic in his jurisdiction and is planning a hospital
in the future."

IOCC was founded in 1992 as the official humanitarian aid agency of the
Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas
(SCOBA). Since then, it has implemented over $226 million in relief and
development programs in 30 countries around the world.

I hope one of the things we can do here is to discuss liturgical translations into the various languages in southern Africa.

One of the things we have been discussing is the translation of the Symbol of Faith, and I have been typic up, for eventual publication, a Zulu version of "An indivation of the way to the Kingdom of Heaven".

This "tribe" - Orthodox Christians in southern Africa

The aim of this forum is to encourage Orthodox Christians in southern Africa to communicate with each other. We may live in different diocese, different countries, and belong to different cultures or languages, but we still have many things in common, and may be in a position to help each other.

In our Archdiocese of Johannesburg and Pretoria, for example, we have been translating liturgical texts into Zulu, North Sotho and Afrikaans. Others may be able to make use of these, or we could be doing them as a cooperative venture.

Some may ask where is southern Africa - south of what? Well certainly south of the Zambezi River, and perhaps south of the Equator, which would include Tanzania, Malawi, Northern Mocambique, Zambia, southern Angola and the southern DRC. Orthodoxy is thin on the ground in all these countries, and so we share that in common too.
