Helenwheels is proud to present ~
ROSE HARDEN in Seattle November 15, 2008!

"A Rose by any other name than Harden would not be as sweet. I don't know many other dancers I can describe as solid and tough while soft and feminine at the same time. Rose just has that rock-solid old-school foundation of craft while still being able to emote ever changing and emerging styles. I wish I knew her secret - she is a true pioneer." -- Surreyya, The Gilded Serpent

Now is YOUR chance to learn her secret! Rose returns to teach in Seattle for one day only!

~*~*~
Rose Harden has been an active member in the San Francisco belly dance community since 1999. A longstanding member of Ultra Gypsy from 1999-2008, Rose has been honored to spend the last 3 years serving as assistant director to Jill Parker, the founder of the Tribal Fusion movement. During those years as co-director, Rose was a creative force in the company's dynamic choreography and innovative costuming. After more than 7 fullfilling years with Ultra Gypsy, she has now moved on to pursue other projects. Rose is also a founding member of Barbary Coast Shakedown, performs with The Lifesize Mousetrap and The Cyclecide Bike Rodeo, and created the popular Rosehips skirts. For more information please visit her website http://www.rosehipsdancer.com

~*~
Workshop 1 * 11:00-1:00
ROCK SOLID FUSION FOUNDATION: Building Your Practice From The Ground Up!
Enhance and deepen your understanding of belly dance fundamentals with technique drills and tribal fusion combos. Rose will cover layering, shimmies, and up-tempo movements -- great for any style of belly dance! This exciting tribal fusion workshop will include just a taste of Rose's signature Core Integration material focused on building flexibility and targeted muscle group conditioning to improve your dancing. This class will accomodate all levels of experience.

Workshop 2 * 2:00-4:00
ICING THE CAKE: Contemporary Tribal Fusion
We'll kick things up a bit here! Level changes, fancy footwork, and spins are the name of the game. We'll work on more advanced layers and a short choreography that highlights Rose's dynamic approach to contemporary tribal fusion belly dance. Because we'll be building on our foundation from the first class, it is recommended that you take both classes. Previous belly dance experience requested if taken without workshop 1.

It's not too bad, and I do yoga pretty regularly which helps out, but there's still this little droop. I'm not usually concerned, except that I have a show coming up in about 10 weeks, and I'd like to get rid of it if possible. Anything would help!

Also, a somewhat related question for ya, in your regular practice, do you have one day set aside for just conditioning? You know, crunches, curls, squats, that sort of thing?

Fremont Solstice Parade is right around the corner and this year I am going to be leading a tribal section of belly dancers within Delilah’s famous Parade March. It is going to be lots of fun and many of us, myself included, will be challenged to coming up with cool tribal gear in fuchsia and bold pink colors! I will be looking to Kajira of Black Sheep Bellydance for inspiration on this one.

The theme this year is “Women for Peace” exploring the power that we have as diplomats and pioneers of freedom within our society and those abroad. Thursday May 1 there will be an initial meeting to chat about the theme, costuming and any other questions people may have about the parade. Please feel free to drop by and say hello. You will get a sneak peek at my first pink costume ever! If you can’t make the meeting, that’s fine also. My classes will start Tuesday May 6 at 7pm

For those of you not in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) here's a heads up about an upcoming workshop.

I will be teaching a two hour workshop in Everett, WA. at the Aquaterra Spring Ithra, being held at the Everett Community College on Saturday April 5th at 11:00am. For more info you can go to www.antir.sca.org/upcoming/ click on Aquaterra Spring Ithra in the April section and it will take you to the link.

You do not have to be a member of the SCA to attend... the workshop is free but you will have to pay the SCA gate fee which is I think less than $10. So you are getting a two hour workshop with me for less than $10. I don't do this very often so you should jump on it if you can.

The workshop will cover "period" Middle Eastern dance from 600-1650... basically the Medieval age. We will discuss art works, costuming, dance moves (as defined by art works and other period resources), musical and rhythm comprehension, the movement of the dance form from the Middle East and up through Europe.... down to how we percieve it now. Yes there will be notes and handouts... I've been working on it for months!!!!

Please dress in either tribal or gypsy costuming for this workshop as it is an SCA event and the hosts would like to see people in costume and such... in other words, no street clothes or work out wear please.

For more info please email me or give me a call... oh and FYI when you go to the website you will not find "Melody" there... I use the name Samira al-Waddi for SCA events.

Hugs and see you all there,
Melody

Since the late 1970s, he has also appeared with famed ethnomusicologist Dr. Ali Jihad Racy at a wide variety of cultural events and major concert halls. Soon she moved to London to pursue a PhD in English, however, it was theatre and dance that truly captivated her. Rather than continue on the PhD track, she followed her passion for Oriental dance. Out of rebellion, and then for the challenge, Haddad devoted herself to the dance. This dance, inhabiting her like a secret and wonderful flower is but a song of a subtle beauty lying in the principle of unusual things and melting into the body.

I see a lot of people on this tribe that I don't know so thought I'd introduce myself and let you know what I do...

Every 2 weeks I send out an email newsletter for Middle Eastern Arts Events(dance and music) in Oregon and Washington. I have been operating this for almost 4 years now and it seems that it has become a valuable resource for many teachers, producers, students and fans throughout the Northwest. Below I have posted the last version for you to check out. And yes, it is long!

So, it is FREE for anyone to receive the newsletter or post a Middle Eastern Arts Event - categories include Upcoming Events(concerts/workshops), Weekly / Monthly Performances, Ongoing Classes, Mailing Lists(links), Tours and Camps, and Out of Town(outside of PDX)classes, workshops, concerts, etc.

And who am I? I am a musician and promoter who did a bunch of stuff in Portland from 2001 to 2006. Currently living and studying percussion in Istanbul.

Dear Dancers!

I'm so excited that I already there are so many people interested in the 2 year training project for traditional dances of the Orient...with so many enthusiastic students it will be a really great project!

I am very pleased that NW Folklife will sponsor the project!
There has been a slight change. The introductory workshop will now take place on March 3-4, 2007.
There are 6 hours of class on each day (12 for the weekend) 10am - 1 pm and 2pm -5 pm...but don't worry...we use time to learn about cultural and historical background, dance notation etc as well! The price for the weekend is $150.
The other weekends will be
October 20-21, 2007
November 3-4, 2007
December 15-16.2007
and then dates for Feb, March, May and June of 2008...which I must wait to set until my touring schedule is a bit more concrete.
June will be our final recital and we will hopefully perform at Folklife as well since they are our sponsors!...can you tell that I'm thrilled about that?

We are still looking for a dance studio/s...if anyone has suggestions or good connections to a particular studio, do let me know.

To introduce the project there is one weekend in March which is open to anyone who wants to come and acquaint themselves with my work. We will try out many different dance styles, look at videos, see photos of previous training programs that I have led. You will have the chance to ask any and all questions about the work and together we will pick the 7 dance styles that we will work on over the following year. Yes! Whoever comes to the introductory weekend helps to choose the repertoire!

The project itself will then be a series of 9 intensive weekends of 12 hours each. We would have a theme and a repertoire of 7 dances...decided upon in the introductory weekend, after which one must decide to participate or not and commit by contract. We will learn the dance styles decided upon, do dance training and yoga, learn about the cultural and historical backgrounds for the different dance styles, learn about choreography, staging, stage make-up and costumes. We learn 7 different group choreographies...each student will be in 4 choreographies, but is expected to be able to stand in for the other 3 if necessary. Costumes are partly out of my collection and partly ones that you will make for yourselves. We will also make decisions about costuming at the introductory workshop. At the end of the project we do a performance...I do solos in between the group choreographies so that we have a smooth running, full evening performance. There is a certificate of participation f
or
all who complete the program. If you would like to chat about anything you are welcome to call! 843/599-1089 (I will be back in Seattle after the 13th of December).

Best regards!

Hello all!

Gypsy Fire Bellydance is honored to be hosting Sabine, a “Mistress of the Blade” , and her troupe Tribalation! in workshops and performance, Saturday, March 29, 2008!
Does the “danger” and drama of sword dance intrigue you?
Learn from a master the essentials, or hone your skills in 2 workshops:
“Liquid Isolations and the Essence of Sword Dance” 10am-Noon
For beginners to advanced dancers. Distilled sword dance technique: instruction in extending hip, arm, and belly isolations and making them look ever-so-smooth-and-gooey while balancing a sword on the head. We’ll practice sword hold techniques, dramatic presentation, and block a slow, sensual sword dance. Bring a head wrap (preferably cotton) and a sword. 2 hours.

“Dangerous Sword Dancing” 1 pm-3pm
Intermediate and advanced sword work and presentation. Learn moves that take your sword dance from so-so to stunning: sword manipulation, strong isolations, uncanny reverse energy moves, working multiple balance points, traveling moves, powerful floorwork, and original moves and combos like The Slice, and Sabine’s Guillotine! Bring kneepads, cotton headwrap and sword. 2 hours.

These workshops will be progressive, so you can take both for a true sword “intensive”!
There are some swords available to loan, please contact Quinn at gypsyfirebellydance@yahoo.com to reserve yours! (Limited number available, act quickly)

Saturday, March 29: “Liquid Isolations” 10am-12pm, and “Dangerous” 1pm-3pm.
Workshop costs: $25/each or $45/both, if registered by 3/10.
OR $30/each or $55/both, after 3/10 or at the door.
Location: Terpsichorean Dance Studio 1601 NW Newport Ave

Then, that evening, come on down to Sons of Norway Hall, 549 NW Harmon, for a Hafla, featuring Sabine, and her troupe, Tribalation! Hafla begins 7:00 pm, doors open 6:30.
Contact Quinn to register for workshops, reserve a sword, and to sign up for a performance slot in the Hafla (limited slots available, and preference given to workshop participants). (541)420-5416 or gypsyfirebellydance@yahoo.com

About Sabine:
Sabine is a dance artist who has studied Middle Eastern Dance since 1988, and has been performing tribal style belly dance since 1999. She honors the roots of Tribal Belly dance in her classes, with troupe Tribalation! and with student troupe Sister Celebration.
Sabine is a master of “Raks al Sayf,” the sword dance, where the grace and flow of the dance movements are contrasted by the dangerous sharpness of the huge Turkish Scimitars that she balances. Sabine has taught her own special brand of “Dangerous Sword Dancing” in workshops and festivals all over the Northwest. Sabine brings a strong and unique presence to the stage. Her dancing has been called "powerful", "mesmerizing", and "beautiful".

I currently live in Bozeman, MT and am looking at relocating to Portland or possibly Vancouver. Can anyone here give me the lowdown on the BD scene in those two places?

I have been studying BD here for a few years and have dabbled in Cabaret and Tribal Fusion, having been first introduced to BD by Rachel Brice (her mom lives here) I tend to prefer the isolated movements of tribal fusion a bit more but I'm a huge sucker for sequins and I can't NOT smile when I dance, so Cabaret fits my personality just as well. Anyway, I'm just trying to get a feel for these areas before I decide to relocate there.

THANKS!
