Any other Room Parties at Orycon 30?

Seems there are fewer room parties every year, hoping more groups/individuals will be stepping forward to throw great parties this year!

The Pirates of the Columbia will be throwing our usual Tiki Party (both Fri and Sat night) again.

This being the last Orycon at Marriott seems we should make it a Con to remember : )

Marriot Hotel updates (for Orycon 30)?

Hello, all! So, are there any insiders here who might have more info about hotel reservations? I am on the Orycon mailing list and check the official site every day, but I thought I'd check here, too, to see if anyone knows anything. So far, it appears that we're still waiting (and it's AUGUST!) for Marriot to get the Orycon blocks done so that we can reserve rooms at the Orycon rate.
Anyone know any more than that?
I'm getting anxious to get our rooms reserved. LOL.

I signed up to present a panel at Pax. Not sure if they will do it but I suggested my movie panel that I do at the cons. It would have to be done this weekend so if you can do it and tell your friends to do so, that would be a huge help.

Share ride to / from Portland - Norwescon?

Hello!

I'm looking to share a ride with someone(s) to and from Portland to NorWesCon.

Here's the deal: on the way up we have one grownup and one child in a car seat.
On the way back is two grownups and one child, no car seat (diff child).
Plan to head up about noon on Thursday and come back Sunday afternoon.

Now, I actually have a very nice car. I just can't drive that far very well by myself. I'd be willing to pay all the gas to get someone else to do the driving. If I haven't met you before, we'd have to meet beforehand to know if we can stand each other for some hours. If we're taking my car, then _probably_ only one other person would fit on the way back.

This is a smoke & drug free trip, I'm allergic.

I hope everyone is doing well and that you, like Gen and I are trying to
fit all the Christams errands, shopping, and decorations into your hectic
schedule. We had hoped to have our tree up Sunday, but the stand was
misplaced. Thankfully Samantha found it when she was cleaning.

Anyway, as we recover from the amazing Van Halen show last night, I wanted
to let you know that I will be on the radio this Thursday morning at 6:30
AM Pacific. The time usually changes to as late as 7:15 as when news and
other information breaks, I get pushed back to fit the scheduling.

We will be looking at my picks for the top computer and video games for

I am back on The top rated Seattle Morning show tomorrow. You can listen online at www.kisw.com or 99.9 FM in the Seattle area.

The show is the Bj Shea Morning Experience, and I will be on at 6:30 AM Pacific Wednesday November 13th.

We will look at some of the pending Fall movies as well as the Writers Strike and the Mass Effect game for the X-Box 360.

OryCon Programming

Folks the programming group is putting together panel ideals. It is normal to ask for a brainstorming session, but if
you are not on the committee list - you might not see it.

If you have ideals for panels, please post them or send to me - yes we have alot of standard panels, but it always
good to find a few new panels (ie original ) every year.

Our convention has a pirate theme this year, and we are looking for good science track items.

So if you went to the con, and were only going to hit one panel, what would be the topic, and what kind of people would be on it???

Web Design and Hosting Needed

While out of the country, I learned the page went down due to server issues. Calls to my ISP and e-mails have not been returned, so I am taking the steps to update the page and move it to a new server in this time. I expect the old server to be up anytime, but I cannot afford to sit around and wait. I am sorry for any delays this caused, I was just made aware of it today when I returned from a trip. If you know anyone who is good at web design, as well as hosting options please send them my way, as I need to move quickly on this.

Just in time for V-Day, I have Vollers corsets from England. These are over the bust in black satin with detatchable garter straps.
Sizes are from 28 to 38. Corsets can take up to four inches off your figure and help with your posture.
These really look great in jeans or period dress.

OryCon Wildness Factor

I am strongly considering going to OryCon. I just moved to the NW from AZ about and I used to go to CopperCon and LepreCon (and a Westercon) in AZ many years ago. Back then, the cons were extremely wild parties with Bibles flying out of windows, people on all kinds of substances, and general mayhem. The Hyatt Regency banned all sci-fi/fantasy cons from ever taking place there again after door numbers were removed and rearranged, ceiling tiles broken, and all sorts of debauchery.

In response, the cons then got very toned down. Beyond mellowed. They went from one extreme to the other. Now, the AZ con scene consists of very low attendance, a basic green room, consuite, art room, dealers room, rpg gaming, a few panels and a Japanimation room. That's it. No dances, no hint of wildness, no real fun. You may as well dress up and stay home.

So, where does OryCon fit in on this scale? I think the extreme wildness of yesteryear would be a bit much, but I'd like to see some frivolity and abandon. Something tells me the NW con scene might be more hip.

ABS sheets

If anyone is making any kinds of costume pieces or displays or anything of the sort, I have sheets of ABS plastic that are smooth on one side and have an "orange peel" texture on the other side. Several of them.

Sheets are 4 feet by 2 feet.
Thicknesses are 1/8" and 1/16".

I have black in both thicknesses and red in the 1/16" thickness.

If you can put it to use I'll give it to ya at $2.50 a sheet for the 1/16" and $3.00 a sheet for the 1/8" stock.

What a bust...

Pooh did a good job as con chair, but my god the hotel was/is horrible for conventions. Slow elevators, too many floors, bad stairwell access, bad ballroom situation (Below ground? No smoking/fresh air/hangout balcony? What the hell?)

The rooms were small and uncomfortable. No good for parties OR hanging out. And the beds were awful.

as in not such a bust. Sure there were problems with this years Orycon. After all, its a fan run con and people can only do so much.

For myself, I had a blast. I got to introduce my 2 year old daughter to fandom. I took her to her first art show. I asked her what she liked. She said "I like these the best" (Horror section). Of all the horror art, I asked her which ones of those she liked the best, she pointed to the Evil Clown Surgeons. So then we went and got a voting sheet and I let her vote for each of the categories. She has pretty strong opinions for a 2 yo (well, going on 3 RSN, but still 8)

While the elevators were a rean PITA, the after hours social was pretty good. Big Kudos to the Pirates 8) Friday night it broke down that for good drinks - Pirates, good food - Costumers, good music - Lan Gaming.

I guess it comes down to the same thing I've observed over years of fandom. Its not the con so much as the people, and if your willing to go out, socialize and meet a few, it can be great 8)

Of course, I believe that if you really want to make it better, then the only answer is to volunteer. Speaking of which, I have to go and volunteer for next years now..

Nice to see a new tribe. I am not on much anymore but yes, I am doing my big 2 Hr panel again at Orycon this year.

I am a regular speaker at local conventions and I wanted to pass this information along.

Also, a few years back we did a charity Laser Tag event between Trek Fans and Star wars fans. Would you be interested in doing this? We may have a third faction as well.

I am helping to promote this show. Please spread the word. I may not be speaking, but I will have a table and as such, I will not only be selling games, dvds, press kits, and my book, but I will be filling in people on the inside news on upcoming films such as the new Star Wars films , AVP 2, Terminator 4, and many more.
