A fairly common problem with an easy solution.
* Boot from the CD/DVD that came with your computer (or a generic OS X installer disc)
* Once past the initial screens, go up the menubar and find the item "Reset Password..."
* Select your internal drive, when it is presented.
* Select your user from the pop-up menu
* Enter a new password and click "Save".
