We'll start gathering around noon, and carry on merrily until the champagne runs out.
Bring refections and libations (and don't forget sunscreen). Glasses, plates, serving pieces, &c should not look modern (keep the aluminium hidden!). Croquet, bowling bunnies, and other period pastimes are also a good idea. Attire from mid-19th century to the 20th is advised (several of us have Edwardian stuff now).
Check out this mornings chron (link below). The article is very well written and it drives home important nostalgia (family) vs. big development theme which is critical to our success. We are NOT DONE. Hit the Chronicle comment board. We want to flood it.

Also, if you are so inclined, please take a minute right away to call the Daly City Manager and tell her she is wrong...

Daly City Manager Patricia Martel has just gone on record as saying the Cow Palace contributes NOTHING to the community. This is dead wrong.

Help us get two hundred calls to her office as soon as possible. Flood her lines. Christmas, dogs, trains, ice skaters, circuses, Globe Trotters, and millions of dollars in income to hotels, restaurants, gas stations and jobs contribute nothing.? Right.

PROGRAM INTO YOUR CELL AND CALL ALL DAY, EVERY DAY:

Plan to show up tonight Thursday 2/28/08 at the Daly City public forum if you can, or ask someone you know in the area to come. Kevin will be there at 6:00, the meeting starts at 7:00.

This is the moment. A very strong showing tonight will send a strong message. We will be sure the new media is there. Attire: Daly City Resident circa 1980 to present. If you can organize costumes like giant flowers, trains, cheer leaders, Elvis...even a few Dickensian characters, go for it. Can someone get Martin on a plane from London please? ... We can work on a big costume thing for the next forum (see below) which will keep the issue in the media. Just showing up tonight is the important thing.

URGENT MESSAGE FROM RED BARN PRODUCTIONS ABOUT THE DICKENS FAIR AND THE COW PALACE

State Senator Leland Yee Ph.D., under pressure from the Daly City Council, is proposing to “surplus” the Cow Palace and sell it to Daly City. Daly City will then sell most of the land to condo developers and pocket the profits. Letter writing WILL stop this. Senator Yee has ONLY heard from Daly City. Let him know you oppose selling the Cow Palace!!!

Here is a link to Senator Yee's website and his press release on the legislation he submitted Friday February 22nd to the State Legislature, (no voting date is set - but it could be soon). This bill wrongly proposes to SELL the Cow Palace to Daly City!
http://dist08.casen.govoffice.com/index.asp?Type=B_PR&SEC={EFA496BC-EDC8-4E38-9CC7-68D37AC03DFF}&DE={49C40B5B-DD5B-48FD-A292-B04E80714184}

We must defeat SB1527 or the Dickens Fair will likely die.
It would take years, if it’s even possible, to relocate and resurrect the Dickens Fair.
Red Barn Productions has studied all the venues that could physically host the Dickens Fair and there are NO other places that currently work. All are either too expensive, too small, are unavailable between Thanksgiving and Christmas OR require unaffordable retrofits in order to be permitted for public assembly. So,
Save the Cow Palace and Save The Dickens Fair. It's that simple AND serious.

Here's the scoop:

The Cow Palace has a perfectly good plan to meet the needs of the local community and Daly City by providing them 13 acres of its’ unused land. Yes, rock concerts bring public problems, according to Daly City, but they also bring public $$$ to the local community. Senator Yee's Legislation SB1527 is doubly wrong. It proposes we, as California State Citizens, sell OUR Cow Palace to Daly City so they can bulldoze it and profit by selling it to private developers. If that isn't bad enough, SB1527 also deprives us of our RIGHT to use a facility that WE own!!

This is like selling off a chunk of Golden Gate Park because a nearby neighborhood proclaims “unanimously” it needs more space for development. It doesn't work that way. We get to vote too...by writing letters and emails and calling his office. Officials can't just decide to take a public asset and sell it…unless it is truly “surplus”. The Cow Palace is not “surplus”. We must stop this proposed sell-off of our property.

Here's what you can do to stop SB1527 and SAVE THE COW PALACE:

#1 Act Quickly. Senator Yee may believe he is serving the public, but he has only heard from Daly City. Let’s give him the other 99% of the picture before he gets any further down this road.

Write a Letter
Write to Senator Yee today. Quickly. Early letters are more powerful. Send personal letters to the address below the sample text at the bottom of this notice. Get it in today’s mail, so he receives it on Monday or Tuesday.

Write an Email
Personal emails may be sent via his website “contact” at page: http://legplcms01.lc.ca.gov/PublicLCMS/ContactPopup.aspx?district=SD08
Emails are not as good as snail mail letters, but they are also effective. Be sure to write in “SB1527” as it is so new it is not on his issue list. …

Call the Office
You can pick up the phone and call his office, see http://dist08.casen.govoffice.com/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={1317EB89-B124-4498-9C50-9A0EA3C89E91}

YOU DO NOT NEED TO MENTION THE DICKENS FAIR. SIMPLY VOICE YOUR OPPOSITION TO SB1527. That’s it! Give reasons only if you want. The important thing is to contact him NOW.

#2 IF YOU LOVE THE DICKENS FAIR, forward this message to groups, friends and individuals and ask them to contact Senator Yee immediately.

#3 IF YOU LIVE in Senator Yee’s District #8 - see map on his site: http://www.sen.ca.gov/ftp/SEN/senplan/SENMAPS/MAP08_300.JPG
…Contact him AS one of his constituents, (District 8 includes most of San Francisco in the West and South, and goes most of the way down the Peninsula). It is a very large district!

Sample Letter:

Dear Senator Yee,

As a California Citizen, and resident of (…your city…), I object to your proposed legislation to “sell the California Cow Palace”. While you may be responding to the needs of Daly City, please respect my rights to use this public facility. It may need work, but how many California public buildings need upgrading? If you want to help Daly City bring in new supermarkets and shopping to the area, let the Cow Palace deal directly with developers and Daly City to make use of the 13 acres the Cow Palace doesn't need. This will preserve my rights while helping the lives of local area citizens. It will also continue the flow of millions of dollars into the local economy annually. These revenues, generated by me and many thousands of others who use the Cow Palace, also help pay for police to patrol the area year-round as well as during big events.

Please reconsider SB1527. There is a better way to help Daly City and Bayshore than destroying the Cow Palace. I use it every year and plan to continue to use it for many years to come. It is not “surplus”; it is a vital community and cultural asset.

Thank you,

Signed,

(you)

Spoke to quiet a few of you'all at the cast party. Here is our idea for when we are doing the different renfaires and casa.

A group of us are interested in starting a group at Casa and some of the smaller faires and are looking for a few more like minded people. Our group is going to put on scenes from plays written by the great Playwrites of the time. We are hoping to get people who would like to be either part or full time (and from any of the faire guilds/groups), but have a keen interest in acting out what the famous Bards of the time wrote in the language of the authors. We are also looking for Chorus (the speech giving kind not singing kind) positions to introduce the plays and help thread the scenes together if need be. We are also looking for understudies of the parts (in case life gets in the way) and some people who are interested in multitasking and possibly some crew type positions.
We are holding the informational meeting on Saturday Feb 9th 2-4pm with a potluck to follow.

Martin sent me this email he has sent to an old Morris friend and asked me to relay it along to all our friends. The news now is that the catheter is out and he is doing fine. He performed for Robert Burns night at the Leather Bottle and the next night as well. I did tell him that it was good that he persuaded the doctors to remove the catheter early as the image of a kilt and a catheter left, well, quite an image in me head! I do think that would be a good name for an aging pipe band: Kilts and Catheters. Okay, so I'm a weirdo--are we surprised?
Anyway, here's Martin's message. This is descriptive of his experience, just preparing you before you go in.

Diana

Dear Michael,

Thanks for your interest and concern. I feel it is my responsibility, having been that close to the edge, to spread the warning to others to go and get a check-up and if there is any slight doubt to ask/demand a biopsy, to be sure. Clearly with the NHS you have to be very assertive and push for what you want...it is your life for heaven's sake and they are only trying to save money.

So yes, please ask Gene to send out an email to all Morris.

Here are the facts.

Last summer I remembered having a slight alteration in the flow of my waterworks earlier in the spring, which seemed to have returned to normal now. However having just had my 60th birthday and hearing so much about Prostate Cancer, which I knew absolutely nothing about, I decided to go to the Doctor and ask about having a check up. A blood test indicated a PSA of 4.6, a little on the higher side of normal but as the doctor said, "Nothing to worry about, let's do another blood test in 9 months."

Feeling that I wanted to know for sure, I pursued my quest for an answer through a digital inspection to a biopsy, and finally they called me in to tell me that I had Prostate Cancer. The Gleeson Count, which tells what sort of cancer it is and how rapidly it is growing, was 7 out of 10, on the higher side of medium growth but "nothing to worry about."
As the PSA was relatively low and the Gleeson Count not alarming they said, being young and healthy, I should consider surgery or radiation to remove the cancer now but relax as I have a year to do something in. "It's contained and quite small, so don't worry, we caught it in the early stages and everything will be fine."

After seeing the Oncologist, (who recommended surgery,) the surgeon who specializes in open Prostate surgery at Darenth Valley Hospital recommended his collegue at Kings College Hospital in London who is considered the best in the country for Laproscopic Prostatectomy and the operation was set for the beginning of January. Everyone said that the cancer was contained, even the registrar the night before the op said that the PSA had risen to 4.7 but as long as it was below 5.0, everything was fine and it was well contained.

As a reassuring note I was told that Dr Philippe Grange is not just the best in this country but in the world having just returned from a week of demonstation surgeries in North America and I was his first op of the year, my prostate was his New Year Baby so to speak. Thank God for the NHS!

So on Friday 11th of January I was down for over 4 hours, lost a lot of blood, and the surgeon said that they had to go extremely close to the outer membrane that contains all the sexual nerves of manhood. However they said as I am exceptionally healthy for my age, I was recovering very quickly and released me in two days after the operation. When I returned to Kings after only 10 days to have my catheter removed, I was able to sit down with both surgeons and discuss what had happened.

The cancer was much bigger than they had expected and in fact had taken over most of the prostate. Because of this they had to cut very close to the outer membrane having to shave off some nerves to get the all of the cancer out. I was very close to the edge. When I asked about the initial diagnosis of "Nothing to worry about, we'll do another blood test in 9 months," the surgeon said this was wrong and very misleading. He said that had I accepted the first diagnosis, which any normal person would have wanted to do, in 9 months it would have been too late.

In retrospect I realised that in the face of taking the easy way out and waiting, it had been God's prompting that made me demand to know more and place me in the position I'm in today writing to you.

Often they advise a year if they catch it early, (which I had been told,) but unfortunately it turns out that I was the other end of the year and had no time left! I asked if the surgeon could write to my doctor explaining what had happened. He said he would communicate the information to the head surgeon at Darenth Hospital who would then write to all the doctors in the area explaining that they need to review the basis for their diagnosis. As my surgeon said, "Clearly this shows that the standard PSA rating does not properly indicate the level of cancer and we need to look at this."
I told him that armed with this information, I now felt it my responsibility to encourage men to go and get checked out and if there was any slightest doubt to demand a biopsy to be sure. He totally agreed with me and congratulated me on my mission to save lives through my own very close experience.

The day I got home from the hospital, an English lady friend in San Francisco emailed me to say her father had recently died in England because he had ignored the symptoms and left it too late.

Therefore I say: Don't Hesitate, it could be too late!

Please share this with as many people as possible, world wide!

"God Bless Us, Everyone!"

Well I came home yesterday Sunday, which surprised all including the doctors.

Anna and I went up by train on Thursday evening and I didn't sleep a wink with nerves and being in a very different environment....hospitals are very noisy at night.
On the slab by 8am having just met the surgeon, Dr Philippe Grange. I found out later that he not only is tops in Europe but the world, having just got back from several demonstation surgeries in North America and I was his first in England this year and the only one that morning....special?

I was down for over four hours, lost a lot of blood, they said the cancer was bigger than expected but felt they had got it all, had to take out some nerves to do this though....we won't know for a while till the biopsy results come back. Need to go back in 10 days to have the catheda removed and the metal clips too, shouldn't show anything in the future and to do nothing for 3 months when I'll be ready for my hip op, which I want to do there at Kings. I was drowning in prayers from everywhere and the unusual recovery time proves that.

I'd like to thank everyone who sent me emails and prayers at Fair, is there a way we can do that?

Had lots of opportunities to witness while in the ward and know that all my prayers and scripture going in helped keep the enemy away from the surgeon's hands.

I thought all the staff and doctors were amazing and so caring and kind and good at what they do, that's why I will demand going back there for the hip.

Thank you for all your support, prayers and help with all of this.

Well, we always bring a rug, chairs, Cherie's makeup table and stool(the only thing she can sit in, in hoops), various mirrors. I do like the idea of setting up Otherbookistan as an impenetrable fortress. Keep out the looky-loos and hangers-on. And the thieves.

My boss has some office partitions sitting downstairs in a hallway, gathering dust. If I can talk him out of them for a month, does anyone have a van or want to go in on a truck rental? Oh, and I've always dreamed of putting mirrors on the OUTSIDE of the compound, so less people come wondering through. We actors are so easily distracted.

Oh, and one question: When is the latest that we can get items back OUT of the Cow Palace? The last day is the 23rd & we won't have a chance to get back until the 29th. I might need to plan in advance.
Re: What's Your Story?Fri, June 29, 2007 - 12:06 AM
in response to: Re: What's Your Story?

Miss Wisteria Frost here.
I first came to this awful place of London on a trip with my brother on a bet. A bet to see who would win in a race through London on velocipedes against the horribly stupid JunkBucket and his friend, oh what's his name.....Thicktristle. Or I like to call them, Bucket of Junk and Skinny Britches. upon finding my proud American intelligence in this country of inbreeding Royals I quickly found my way to the more comfortable area of Mad Sals.
On my trip to this area I met one Mr. Jeremy Wolf. He was a sight to see. Very handsome and quite dashing in his cheap clothing. Nothing better than a cheap man, except a cheap woman.
Finding that I was a most modern woman, with no need of escort...............well, proper escort through the streets, and taking notice to the fact that I did not bother with dresses but prefer men's clothing, he brought to my attention his business.
I explained that my brother the Professor was a superbly intelligent man and has many things to do with his time, inventing and such.
I on the other hand I had quite a bit of time to see and touch the sights.
You see my brother invents, I destroy those which need destroying. A sort of protector of my utterly intellectual brother.
He prefers to not get his hands dirty or injured. I on the other hand do not mind a bit of filth upon my gloves, I can afford more, and I am never injured.
But, I digress.
Upon hearing my necessities handsome Jeremy introduced me to a few of his ladies, who carried the most ample of pillows to rest my head upon.
After many drinks of Martinis and Champagne, which I had brought to the ladies in my hotel room, I had messenger send word to Jeremy that he was needed.
When Jeremy arrived, he was surprised to see a swing and hooks installed in the was and ceiling. All occupied by at least one of his ladies.
Happily awaiting my return.
I did take dear Jeremy by the hand and escorted him to the bed.
I undressed him as I was, though I did wear my riding bowler, and jewelry and smoked a cigar.
Needless to say the ladies did not last long in their joyful contraptions and Jeremy did not seem at all unhappy to be tied to the posts.

In the morning I fed and had new clothing brought in for the ladies. Each one leaving with a new gold broach to accompany the dresses.
It is easier for me to recognize the good ones for my next visit, that way.
I gave Jeremy a new Tie pin, time piece of gold and quite a bit of money for their time.
I did not tell Jeremy the extra bit was for his services, because this would dearly offend his pride at being a business man.

I made many a trip to Jeremy's area of business. And, I must say I enjoyed the ladies and many of the men while I was their on my trip.
Though the men were not in his service, I paid them for their time as well.
Some were offended some were hungry and did not gripe.

I even spent a bit of time wooing the ladies at their tea in the Toff areas of London.
And then slipped away to find their husbands and brothers. Mr. Nickleby is not nearly as true as he makes himself to be.
Neither is Mr. Fezziwig, Mr. Wrayburn, Mr. Boffin, Mr. Murdstone and Miss Murdstone together, Ms. Boffin, Mr. and Mrs Lammle, whom I am mistaken for quite often. I did also enjoy Lord Verisoft very much. And that Hawk was a delight, though he did cry afterwards. Terrible thing. And, it was a bit disturbing as he resembled my dear brother Tiberius. I had had enough. After making Mrs. Finching turn the color of her outter, inner, under, over & all around wears. And she causing a tear to run from mine own DRY eyes.

I had such a fulfilled visit that I plan on returning to this place of filth and ignorance.
But, only to see my dear Jeremy and his girls.
I will bring the riding crop, you bring yourself, Jeremy. And, maybe a girl or two.
But, most definitely you.

Greetings, Citizens of Otherbookistan!

Workshops start this Saturday (11/3). The exact location of the school in Pacifica where the first two weeks will be held is noted in Cat’s missives. Unless you have a pressing reason and cannot attend (and we would like to know that in advance, if possible), we are asking that all Otherbookistanis attend the morning meeting, which will be chock-full of usefulness and good humour, and plan on staying until the end of the day.

We urge you to take as many workshops as possible – the offerings this year are especially good. We were pleased to see that at long last a Projection workshop is being offered, and so we are requesting that all members of the Other Books cast take this important class. We need to be heard! We also recommend taking our own Ana Elizondo’s Improv workshop, as well as one of the physical characterization labs. Peter’s makeup workshop may also be of use, and a language workshop is always time well spent.

We will be meeting and rehearsing every day after workshops. We ask that you attend as many of these as possible, since we will be giving you lots of important information as well as preparing for our show. We are an ensemble cast and our flexibility and dramatic effectiveness depend on our knowing and trusting each other as much as possible. We don’t have much time to create the magic, so please participate as fully as you can in the meetings. This year we need to be a strong dramatic presence in the streets, ass well as utilizing our stage.

If you haven’t advised us of character changes, or changes in citizenship, please do so with all alacrity.

We are starting an Otherbookistan tribe that will communicate “behind the scenes” information and facilitate discussion. If you are on tribe, you will be receiving an invitation shortly. If you are not on tribe.net, consider joining.

As always, please direct questions, &c to your esteemed co-Directors.

Hail Otherbookistan!

Aloha, brave citizens of Otherbookistan!

There are many changes on the horizon preparatory to our next big Xmastide adventure at Dickensia sur Vaca.

We want to remind you all that our official kickoff will be at Casa de Collier on Saturday, September 29 in fabulous Redwood City. Festivities will commence around 2:00 and go for a considerable time. However, starting around 3:00 we will be making announcements, doing character intros, as well as some preparatory training and proto-rehearsals. We realise that many of you will be at that other Casa, but we strongly encourage those Otherbookistanis not so engaged to plan on attending.

Between now and then we would very much like to know whether you plan on renewing your citizenship papers, and if you are considering any character changes. This information is important to us as we start the planning process. We hope to make several changes in our focus and scope, and it will be very useful to get an accurate census. We also need to start the wish list audition process.

After our merry kickoff, our next airing will be a picnic at Mr Garfield’s monument is Golden Gate Park on Saturday, October 27th. We will be doing character work and promotion of the fair to the as-yet unsuspecting populace.

In other news, we are pleased to report that aside from the first day of workshops we plan on not doing onsite auditions. This will enable us to do more training and rehearsal work. We therefore encourage you to attend as many of these as possible. Also a new tribe expressly for communication between Otherbookistanis (along the lines of the Dickens Fair Workers tribe) will be starting shortly. This will be adjunctive to our email communications.

Lastly, as always, please contact us with you ideas or suggestions. If you have promising potential citizens, please bring them to our attention.

It is with sadness that I am to inform you that I will no longer be a member of Otherbooks cast.
Let me clarify; I will be reprising the role of Mrs. Lammle for as much time as I can.
But, I will not always be available as I am taking over the role of the director for Christmas Carol. This is with the blessings of our dear directors of Otherbooks.
No worries though, I still take my duties as the Ambassador of Intellegence quite....uh....seriously, yeah seriously. I will simply have dual citizenship.
This is both a wonderful thing and a straining thing.
Good news we hopefully will still have our backstage areas together.
I mean really, I am going nowhere.
Kurt we will still run the streets and I would like to keep our time on stage if possible.
You can't shut Mrs. Lammle up or away.

I have the fire power. Now I need to see if there is a way to rig a candelabra so that it appears that the flames are being shot out. Or a way to make it look like a coin is being shot thru. Glass balls (probably too messy) Shooting a hole in a playing card? Help! Thena

Greetings, Loyal Otherbookistanis!

Although it’s still Summer, RenFaire season, and all that, it’s never too soon to start thinking about our beloved DaddyFair, and to that end we’d like to give you some preliminary food for thought.

Other Books is first and foremost a street-based improv troupe. Our purpose is to engage our audience and immerse them in the wonderfully vivid world of Mr Dickens. This is the biggest part of what we do. Having a nice big stage is a wonderful thing, but we noticed last year that that it pulled a lot of the group’s time and energy away from our primary purpose. Although we’re still developing our ideas, we want to shake up what we do with the stage. We would like to run the stage with less emphasis on repertory so that people have more chances to get out into the streets and do that hoodoo that we do so well. We are also considering asking that some of the bigger, more popular scenes be done more than once so that more of audience gets to enjoy them.

We want to emphasise characters over casts. While there is a great deal of theatrical power in having a cast of characters creating the relationships and scenes from the books, we do not need to limit ourselves. Remember that we are all seething around in Daddy’s head, and there are no small characters. Dickens’ oeuvre is filled with so many wonderful characters – we’d like to see more of them, and the theatrical possibilities that they create. If there is a character that attracts you that isn’t in one of the books we are already working in that you would like to try, let us know.

Keep fresh and keep open – both to your audience and to your fellow actors. For the kind of theatre we do, linearity and limits get in the way of good improv, and we don’t need to be constrained by timelines. For example, for several years Copperfield and Steerforth (Rydell and Richard Maritzer) constantly changed their reactions to each other and hence the focus of their street scenes – sometimes bosom buddies, other times bitter enemies. You all have that freedom. Remember that Nicholas and Sir Mulberry have their explosion BEFORE the rape scene. Your character should be so strong and nimble that you can continually adapt your performance to the needs of the moment.

To help brush up our chops we want to create more opportunities for honing our skills and character development. We will be working on that a lot during workshops, and so request that you attend as many rehearsals during workshops as you possibly can. We will also endeavour to schedule a few rehearsals before workshops, and between now and Dickens there will be a rehearsal component to our picnics, parties, and other events.

Casting Note: if you want to change character, let us know. If you want to introduce fresh blood into the group, let us know (we’ll have them sign a waiver, and then we’ll audition them).

Now on to the fun part! The next Otherbookistan function is our Boating Party on Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park. It will take place on Saturday, August 18 starting at 11:30 (gods know when it will end). Please make an effort to come in costume, and be willing to work on character and accent (at least in the beginning). If you want to play as a different character for this event, that’s fine too. Remember your sunscreen and hydrating substances (like water, fruit juice, &c). Bring period accoutrements (glassware, plates, &c) so that there are no visible anachronisms to spoil the effect. At some point we might even get into some boats.

Our official kick-off meeting, which will feature announcements and some rehearsal opportunities, will be at the Casa de Collier on Saturday, September 29. More information will follow as to time, &c. Additionally, we are trying to schedule a Garfield’s Monument picnic as well as an invasion of the Blackburns in October.

Each year we build on our successes and grow stronger.
Hail, Otherbookistan!
