Jacques Roubaud is one of the most amable and gentlest poets I've ever met:

On the page you can also find a link to the "In Defense of Poetry" reading he did on the Poetry International Festival in Rotterdam in 2002. It was deep and hilarious:

"French poet Jacques Roubaud mounts a vehement attack on Jean-Marie Le Pen, free verse and SLOP, “Standard Language of Pap”, all of which, he says, pollute our language."
