I was very sad to hear about Bennett leaving this wold. I have many fond memories of him. Here is one from 1986.
There was a big faerie party at Golden Gate House, a huge flat in San Francisco where David Kerlick, Jim, the late Leo Ayrs (sp?) and the late Gary Compton and at various times other faeries, lived. Harry & John were there, visiting from LA.
About 10 PM, and it's a cold foggy night, Bennett, naked at the party, walked out the door in the buff. It was an African-American neighborhood at the rime, and myself and others were worried what might happen to Bennett wandering the streets buck naked!
About 1 AM Bennett returns with a big smile on his face, naturally prompting several of us to inquire about his adventures.
Bennett, said," I walked to the park (Alamo Square) a few blocks away and laid down face down on a bench. Then I waited a long, long time.
It was cold, but the colder it got , the hotter I got! Then I saw there was something there. It was a man! "
Bennett did not have to tell the rest of the story. We, like Bennett, now all had smiles on our faces.
xxoo,
Jerry the Faerie

Bennett was last at the Sanctuary this past fall. Word from a friend who was there, was that he was run off the Sanctuary by a committee led by Iz.
So, we hear of this faerie elder's body getting found in the woods in a homeless camp, probably froze to death.
His last encounter with the faeries was being told to leave.
Reminds me of how Russel C (Dirty faerie) was also told to leave the Sanctuary in not very gentle terms not too long back.
He went to Eugene and shortly thereafter committed suicide in a good friend's bed.
I pray this is not a pattern.

Bennett remembered for puppets and humor
      By Michele Mihalovich
      Ashland Daily Tidings

About 20 people turned out for the Saturday afternoon memorial service honoring Bennett Tanner, whom they believe was the man found burned above Lithia Park two weeks ago.

Ashland Police Department has ruled out all but one possible identity, but a positive identification still has not been made, said Deputy Chief Rich Walsh. The site where the body had been found also contained sock-puppets. Tanner was known throughout the Ashland community for his sock-puppet shows.

"Whether it was Bennett or not, Bennett just got a memorial service," said Daniel Rueff, a local homeless advocate who painted a cross white, gathered madrone berries and placed yellow roses at the memorial site, which is just above the area where the body was discovered.

Former Ashland Police Chief Mike Bianca attended the memorial and played a Native American flute during the service. Komac, also a local homeless advocate, wrote a song and played it on his guitar. City councilors Cate Hartzell and Eric Navickas attended the service, as did several of Bennett's friends.

Someone brought radio recordings of Tanner's comedy routines.

"I had no idea he was so funny," said Rueff. "There was a lot of laughter mixed in with tears Saturday."

Navickas said he attended Tanners's memorial service to show his support for the homeless community.

"I always appreciated his comedy routines downtown," he said, adding that Tanner was incredibly witty. "I am really saddened by the tragic way he died and that he'll no longer be a part of our community."

Navickas said Ashland has been negligent in not addressing the serious problem of the homeless not having safe places to sleep.

Although police said it is unrelated to the recovered body, they have also cited several people for prohibited camping in the city limits in the last few weeks.

"I'm starting to see a trend where people are noticing and reporting it more," Walsh said. "We've been getting a lot of complaints about transients sleeping in various places."

It is illegal to sleep on public land anywhere in the city, as well as camping in the watershed, Walsh said.

Medical examiners with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office are still working on toxicology reports to determine the cause and time of death. The death appeared to be caused by a fire that got out of control, according to autopsy results. Authorities say the report revealed no signs of foul play.

A burned body was discovered in Lithia Park this week. Possessions found near the body suggest it is likely a well known homeless man named Bennett Tanner.

Earlier this week, a hiker found a burned body in Lithia Park in Ashland. Well known for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, our little city is nestled within the Rogue Valley and is a haven for poets, writers, artists and musicians. There is an air of creativity here and it feels like a safe place to live and a good place to raise a family. Any inkling of potentially serious crime makes us pause, so when we heard about this "body" we were scared, upset, worried. What happened?

As the story began to unfold, we heard that the body was found in a homeless camp near the Ashland watershed. Even worse, we heard that a bicycle belonging to our friend Bennett Tanner and several sock puppets were found nearby.

The last time we saw Bennett was in early December. It was early in the evening and we were in the middle of a walk downtown. He was sitting on the sidewalk near the flower shop performing with his sock puppets. Our family stopped to watch him for a few minutes and chat. He was his funny, animated self. I remember thinking how cold it was that night and I think we told him to take care of himself and to try to stay warm. I remember he had something on the ground that he was collecting coins in and we added what we could before we walked away. We were all glad to see him and on the way back home we talked about how much we liked him.

We are still waiting for the results of a toxicology report, which could take several weeks to finish. As much as I want to hold on to hope and be wrong, I suspect that Bennett’s life came to an end sometime in December 2007.

Although some people in the community may have thought of him as "quirky", he was always polite. I never heard him say a bad word about anybody else.

Bennett was a regular at our KSKQ community radio barbecues last summer. He did several "sock puppet" shows on open mic night and we will always remember him as a gentle person and a creative comedienne.

In the years he lived here, Bennett was quoted several times in newspaper articles regarding the issue of homelessness. Shortly before his death he was quoted in an article that ran in the Mail Tribune. It might have been his last request. "I could use a sleeping bag made for really cold temperatures," he said. "It gets down to zero here, and that's the only thing that will keep me warm. I also need a tarp to try and keep my things dry when it rains." In the same article, Amber Thomas, an office manager for ICCA (Interfaith Care Community Ashland) said, "Temperatures are starting to drop, and I'd hate to see someone die because they froze to death."

I hope that in the last minutes before Bennett’s death, he was able to focus his eyes on something beautiful. I imagine he was staring at the moon or a few really bright stars and I hope that the beauty he saw offered some solace and that somehow he was not feeling any pain.

          Ah.
Now we read in the WC faerie tribe
that Bennett had a lovely Sanctuary visit last summer.
          La la la.
          But-
a good friend and one of my housemates was at Sanctuary last fall, when Iz
          ran Bennett off Sanctuary.
As happened when Russell was ran off Sanctuary,
then went to Eugene and committed suicide.
Thr Sanctuary spin machine says black is white.
Kind of like how a few in Nomenus lie about my membership applications.
