This was a project originally started over at Free Association, a tribe alternative that has slumped recently in activity as most of Free Association's founding members have returned here to tribe. Many people wrote me wanting to see this material over at a more visible site. By popular request, we are moving the most popular threads from there to here to start.

Re: Opening circle
Fri, October 6, 2006 - 8:03 PMOkay,
I got the call.
Here's what I first posted over at Free Association:
Twenty years back I was a part of a group of west coast Gay men who called circles and raised the money to purchase land to create a "Sanctuary" for Gay men. This Sanctuary was called as a safe space for Gay men to be able to explore their spirituality, the inner and outer questions of what it means to be a Gay man in this world. A lot of Gay men feel that their sexuality is also spirituality, as in many traditions Gay men have filled the roles of shaman, healer, and priest.
There are numerous communities of women only spirituality circles, yet when Gay men try to call such space for themselves this still proves controversial.
I have women friends who have been a part of these women only communities, so I've heard a bit about the magic that can happen in such space. When women live together in a group often their bodies synchronize, their periods happen the same time.
So a group of faggots out of San Fransisco created a church called "Nomenus" that got 501 C-3 status as a church for Gay men. We raised money and bought 80 acres at Wolf Creek, Oregon that had a history of hosting several note able faerie gatherings and communities.
From the start many were hostile to the concept of male only space. Now it is called there about a week out of each year, by permission of the resident community that has laid claim to this Sanctuary.
Nomenus today is mostly a rubber stamp for this community. It is not good to disagree with this community, as certain members there have used tactics of psychic warfare. For example, a current Wolf Creek Sanctuary resident named Iz whom I disagreed with went on a public forum and accused me of taking drugs there. Not true, but such tactics are tailored to discredit and defame their "opponent." This is odd, as a core belief for the church of Nomenus was to be that of subject/subject consciousness.
That is (This is from Wikipedia):
"Subject-SUBJECT consciousness, a concept proposed by Harry Hay believed by Hay to be queer people's unique perspective on the world. Hay saw heterosexual society existing in a subject-object dynamic; where men, who had the culturally acceptable power, saw only themselves as subject and therefore higher than women, who were treated as objects and property. Hay extrapolated this interpersonal-sexual dynamic (male-power:female-subordinate) into a broader social context, believing that the subject-object relationship was the driving force behind most all of societies ills. Objectification served as a barrier, emotionally separating an individual (subject) from another individual by dehumanizing them, making them object.
When Hay looked at homosexual relationships, however, he saw a different dynamic at work. He believed that homosexual relationships were based on mutual respect and empathy for the other, a longing for a companion who was as equally valuable as the self. Hay termed this interpersonal-sexual dynamic subject-SUBJECT (which Hay capitalized for emphasis in all of his writings). He believed that this subject-SUBJECT way of viewing the world was queer people's most valuable contribution to the greater society. By empathizing with all people, relating to each other as equal to equal, society would change drastically and social injustices would be eradicated."
I included that because that is the spirit in which this Sanctuary was called.
I would not expect a lot of people to join this Association, considering the consequences of getting placed on the Sanctuary communities enemies list.
A lot of us who started the Sanctuary feel it's direction is wrong, but we are shut out.
This was posted by my friend Swampwitch recently.
"
20 some odd years ago, I attended my first Breitenbush Gathering
known as Northwest Men in the Woods - some of you were there.
It was announced at that gathering the effort we now know as
the Nomenus Sanctuary at Wolf Creek, Oregon was just getting
started ... as the purchase of the land was being negotiated.
It was announced at the time, the sanctuary space would be men
only.
Fast forward to August 14th, 2005 (last year) I visited the
land near Wolf Creek surprised to find females (gender) there.
I don't know the event, if there was one, but I felt completely
out of place.
That night I slept in my truck ... and quietly left mid morning
the next day ... thinking will I ever return? So far, I have not
made the effort to do so.
