I'm not sure what to call it yet, but something like "Arizona Raves Are The Worst In The World" has a nice ring to it:

impressive! and all this from a man who doesn't even drink (heavily). I've always admired your verbosity nick, but most of all I admire your absolute integrity to yourself and the scene. thanks for reminding us all why we do what we do and not what they do.

Thank you profusely and sincerely, Rob. This experience has given birth to a GREAT idea. I will show these people what a REAL rave is, and with MINIMAL financial risk.

"Almost every single event here seems to be nothing more than an attempt at doing just that: As many stages, as many DJs, and as many genres as can be incorporated, in order to attract EVERYONE and to be all things to all people. "

I noticed this as soon as we moved out here to AZ. I don't understand it. Do people look at a flier for a party with less than 5 stages and dismiss it as not worth their time? Some of the absolute best parties that I've been to over the past 10 years have had ONE stage.

I agree with BJ, when we were looking for a scene in AZ we had a couple attempts on some pretty interesting events if you will call them that. It was as though people were trying to appeal either to the wrong crowd, or just hungry for money.Perhaps maybe to the kids who really didnt have bills to pay and have allowances to spend on what have you. It wasnt until we randomly stepped onto the Mystic and the Overmind works crew, which have been consistant through and through.

No with the Emile comment, you mean like emie and radar: bomb shelter djs.? and please dont laugh this is Ohio talking?

Yes, Emile, Radar, and Z-Trip, of the Bombshelter DJs. That is EXACTLY who I'm talking about. Emile played at the first rave I ever threw, in 1996, and ROCKED IT. There were only 4 or 5 people on that lineup. I'll show you the flyer sometime.

He is a phenomenal DJ, but has kind of fallen by the wayside in life. He has some personal problems that have disrupted his ability, affected his talent, and ruined his reputation (some of which is not his fault). While everyone else has given up on him, I am trying to nurture and empower him to return to his former glory, and to give him the opportunities to do so.

My self and crew that I threw parties with in the late 90's (fame Records) we had the bombshelter dj come to one of our parties, however Emile was the only one that showed. They once upon a time were my to faves!

            Damn, Nick....damn.

Chill, dude, all I want for the crew is a little recognition. The mention of the name would have been cool.
That's all, just a mention. I kept looking for the name, and I didn't find it, I was like WTF?
We have put alot of hard work into our stuff, and we keep trying to improve.

            Oh....BTW....

...I have the press kit and the CD for Bigwigs.
I want to bring them to the Valley.

            ...wanna help do that?
i'll bring it with me to Karuna.

Talk to Hank about BigWigs. They're one of his favorite artists.

Okay, man, I'm sorry I didn't mention you. I'll add it right now. Silly me. :(

Naw, that's OK...I really don't read all that trash on the "rave boards" anymore anyway.

Guess I just woke up in a mood to be a dick yesterday.

I'll get with Hank about Bigwigs. Been giving their new cd a listen...hell yeah!
BTW, could you shoot me his # of list or text it to me?

Yes, the fickle ravers of Arizona likely just don't have the experience needed to conceptualize a rave that is psychedelic, countercultural, futuristic, meaningful, and spiritual (human spirit). There is often skepticism given to one stage parties (except for Kandieland, which has nothing but HHC on the main stage, a small "alternative stage," and an attendance of 1000 every damn year) and to parties that are locals-only. Many people are so completey genre-specific that they refuse to attend an event unless their preferred genre is represented, and the promoters are so locked into catering to these people that they have alienated all of us adults who got to experience a REAL party with a REAL vibe at least once in our lives.

But, it's rare that these promoters make money anymore, and it's laughable that they don't realize why, even when I spell it out for them over and over again.

Well, it was definitely one of the longest posts I've seen at a EDM-related forum.... The subject is definitely worthy of an article at least. Why not consider one for Phoenix New Times. You've made some very good points, and given plenty of examples. Yes, that adds lots of words, but then how can a person really evaluate a statement without substantiation.

I liked that you emphasized that you did not get value (as determined by you) commensurate with the value (to you) that you laid out in order to hear/dance to the music you were lead to think would be played for a particular length of time under certain conditions. This is a concept missed by lots of people

And the push for numerous stages as an attempt to please everyone is going to almost always be a problem. I don't see how multiple genres (or subgenres if you wish) can be well done on a one-night event. The only place that I have seen this done really well is the well-known and well visited club, The Guverment, in Toronto. It has trance, house, hip/hop, and old skool with subs of those in 5 different rooms (last time I checked). But this is *very* large place (was the RPM back in the 80s when Paul first was going there) and is set up for it so that sounds do not bleed over at all.

But, Nick, you made your case well for not liking what you were required to paid for (ahead of time) - and then did not actually get as promised (per fliers/ads I presume). Any logically thinking person will recognize that, even if s/he happened to like the kind of music that did get played without interruption or distraction.

Well, logically thinking people in this particular community are rare. But, when I'm done implementing THIS, my logic will be undeniable and should effectively penetrate rather far into some fairly feeble minds:

Well, Nick, thanks for not including me or Stage6 Productions on that list.

It reeeeeally makes me feel good that I'm included with the likes of Matt Dunn and Flock.

This is exactly the kind of thing I was just discussing last week with someone about ya'lls attitude toward us.
Maybe someday ya'll will take us seriously....
        ...maybe not.

        Your loss if not.

        Rave on Nick, rave on.

I think Stage 6 just wasn't a priority because we haven't been working with OMW for so long, and one of the first things Nick says is anyone left out should not take it personally.

You know me man, always on the grey side. =)

Uhhh, you've been working with us longer than just about anyone I can think of, as of late. Well, people that are STILL working with us. You are among the only people who "WORK with" us, anyway. YardZ, Albie, BJ, Stephanie, Eric, Chris, and Jessi (and probably other people I'm forgetting here) have done a whole lot to make our psytrance "scene" here something of a community, which is something we've worked for for many years, and only made some MAJOR progress with once you started getting involved. I have a lot less stress with events now, and it's because of people like you who contribute things, not because there's some material reward, but because it appears to be in your interest.

          Oh, for fuck's sake...

Well, you're not answering your phone, so...

I'll be talking with you guys about it, certainly. If you're coming down for Karuna, I can brief you then. I didn't even tell certain of my own OMW crew members about it until yesterday.

What, pray tell, makes you think we don't take you seriously? We welcome your presense at each event, don't we? We were willing to merge our last event with a burner event, all because of YOUR involvment and offering us something new, weren't we? I've told you guys before how much I appreciate your presence, how much of a help you've been, etc (unless I'm just remembering shit that didn't happen). For instance, Circuit II - you guys secured the spot, did a lot of GREAT work to keep us warm, etc. Circuit VI - Albie went out there and got us our backup spot, if memory serves.

          What the FUCK?!?!?

I didn't put you on that list because you're kind of in the "OMies" category. Did you see that part? YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. You guys have your very own unique kind of thing going on, anyway, and I was going to talk to you about it in good time. As a matter of fact, I think I mentioned this idea to you on the phone already, as I recall having talked to you after Foursome (again, unless I'm remembering shit that didn't happen, which I suppose is possible, but unlikely).

Calm down. Right now I'm just trying to get an audience with people that don't come to our parties and that I don't interact with on even a quasi-regular basis. People that I'd actually have to win over and that might not agree with the idea right out of the box, which I think you would.

Shit. I need to remember that Tribe ruins PHP URLs. The first link is to a thread called "A RAGING Brainstorm" in the "Brainstorming" section of the site. Clearly YardZ found it on his own. The second link is to Micah's "I want some goddamn psytrance" thread.

I hate the way Tribe handles replies to posts. It's confusing as all hell to add this as clarification of the original post, with links, only to have it show up at the bottom, far away from what I was responding to. It can get confusing as hell.

Its node based and they should have more than just an indentation to represent which node a conversation is taking place under. Like plain old lines that all the other node based message boards have. Oh well.
