so i've been mixing psytrance for about 6 months and i'd really like to contribute your psy scene you are building here. i am very much a newb, but i do have a couple of mixes recorded. the funny thing is i've never been to a psy party, yet i listen to and mix it all the time. are you guys interested in taking more dj's under your wing? i've been raving long enough to be jaded by them, and i'd like to contribute to your scene instead.

Re: question for the omw crew
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 1:56 AMI am not part of of the OMW crew but i am close friends with them. This is how they will handle it. You will need to send in a mix cd to either Timcat or Nick Synergy, or whoever else from the crew. Then from their the crew will decide and discuss things. They may consider you and contact you. I am sure Timcat and Nick Synergy will be able to inform you better. But the most important is having a good demo :).
Again I am not part of the crew, but i am sure this is close to what the procedure would be. So if there is anything else you need then one of the official OMW people will probably post the right way about getting in a demo and all that.
As far as I know there really isnt anything happening soon for OMW, as far as outdoors. Not sure if they are wanting to do any indoor event this summer. So if not then its till fall for the next event.
welcome to the Arizona Psy scene, if thats what you want to call it.... We are people of peace and love and I am sure you will be a great addition to this close knit group of psy heads here in AZ.
Hope to meet you soon and listen to a demo too. -

Re: question for the omw crew
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 11:41 AMlistening to the demo right now. Chris has it just about right. Just need a demo. We're always looking for new talent to help contribute to the psy scene here, since it is such a small but thriving scene. -

Re: question for the omw crew
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 12:09 PMAwesome. It's a bit pop for my own tastes (like it dark) because I was trying to make it appeal to ravers. It's not perfect, but I haven't been spinning for years either. Any feedback you could give me, I'd really appreciate. Are there any parties coming up soon?

Re: question for the omw crew
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 12:58 AMWe're honestly a bit stingy about bookings. There are many reasons for this:
- Our events are often the only events we (OMW crew DJs) get to play at. I am fortunate enough to have other bookings from time to time, but OMW events have largely been all about us getting to hear the music we enjoy, at our own events, in our own format, on our own terms, etc. It's very much like getting together with your family on a holiday.
- We like to play proper set lengths (1.5-2 hours minimum), which leaves less prime time for guests.
- There are now more people playing psytrance in Arizona than we can regularly accomodate.
- We are very picky and selective about music and DJs, and have a rather high standard of quality as our minimum.
I have listened to some of your demo (it kept lagging and pausing itself and such, so I couldn't really evaluate it - can I just download the file somewhere?). It is a bit poppy even for my tastes (and I'm the "poppiest" of the bunch, I think), but I understand your stated reasons for making it that way. Some of the mixing is a bit rough, and the phrasing could be programmed better in places, but that is to be expected from someone at your experience level. I'd save mixes like these for personal listening and evaluation. I can understand being eager and having a desire to play out, but for most DJs it takes at least a year of consistent practice to be stage-ready. I'd give yourself that much time, minimum, before promoting yourself and seeking bookings from promoters.
For pointers, advice, technical info, you should pick the brain of Hahn the Barbarian (he is a good teacher in this area, and taught me some things even after I'd been doing this for many years). If you bribe him with XBox 360 games, you may well be able to get his full attention and receive high-quality instruction. :)
In the meantime, try to go to some psytrance parties. There'll be several in California this summer, I assure you (the Gemini festival would be a good start). Observe other psytrance DJs and what they do. Observe the promoters and what they do. Look at all the things that work and those that don't. Share the music with other young (and old) people and bring those that enjoy it along to gatherings. If the psytrance community in Arizona can continue growing (but attracting primarily intelligent, respectful, responsible, and self-aware people), it will someday have the attendance, infrastructure, and support for multiple promotional groups/crews (which is something we'd like to see).
If you really want to CONTRIBUTE to our community, the best ways to do so are to attend gatherings, to donate funds to cover the expenses for those gatherings, to bring firewood, and to help out in any other event-related areas where you are talented and would like to apply yourself. The main area where I'd like to have a lot more assistance right now is in the securing of event sites, which requires scouting in the National Forest during daylight hours on the Friday before a gathering and grabbing the best available campsite before someone else does. Lots of people like to help us tear down, etc, but it's really all the things that need to be in place BEFORE the events that stretch us thin.
Thanks for the inquiry, for sharing your music, for reaching out, etc. -

Re: question for the omw crew
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 8:40 AMHmm, you could try, but you'd need to bring a larger hammer. Those tent stakes don't drive into the floor as easy as dirt. -

Re: question for the omw crew
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 2:08 PMThanks for responding Nick.
Go to www.mixupload.com/media-TimewaveZero and you can podcast the mix. Yes, it's pretty "poppy" for my tastes as well, but I've helped Matt Dunn set up his events for sometime, so I had his crowd in mind, trying to appeal to them because he said he would book me when I was ready to start playing. Yes, the phrase programming could be better, and there are a few technical errors, but it's only my first mix. I decided to put it online anyway for some feedback. I've listened to my mix countless times, and made notes of what worked, and what didn't, so that after enough practice and re-working, it'll be flawless.
Understood about the stinginess for booking, and I really dig the fact that your events are more like a family outing. That's how a good party should be, IMO. I'd rather be dancing, playing, and having a good time with a few intelligent, respectful people than the whole lot of scummy people, and not to mention every drug dealer in the metro area that a rave tends to attract.
Also, I have a nice new Jeep, so scouting out in the middle of nowhere for an event site sounds like a good time to me :)
I'll definitely check out the Gemini outing, and I look forward to meeting all you guys sometime soon.
