This is a tribe for those whose hearts have been touched by the tale of Owen and Mzee, a baby hippo and 130 year old giant tortoise who found friendship in each other following the devastating tsunami in December 2004. Owen was separated from his hippo pod and trapped on a coral reef. Two days after the tsunami, he was spotted by local villagers, rescued and transported to Lafarge Eco Systems, a wildlife refuge in Mombasa, Kenya to be nursed to health under the protection of a caring staff. Looking for a friendly face, he immediately headed towards Mzee, hiding behind him as a baby hippo might do with its mother. Mzee was confused and hesitant at first, but soon took a liking to Owen. They became fast friends, and to this day, they are inseparable, spending their days together wading in water, sharing vegetation, sunbathing and nuzzling.
