Parties and Frolic

Auction for the Land Fund

Join the women and men of Ozark Avalon for this traditional adult
gathering to celebrate the fertility of springtime. Play with your loved
one in the meadows and woods and make new friends in our large flowering
community on the bluffs overlooking the Missouri river.

Singles and groups, straight, bi, gay or celibate: this is the season of
frolic and of fertility worship. This weekend is in honor of ourselves
and our bond to the land. Women under 35, regardless of childbearing
status may compete to be our May Queen. Wear your finery and all
contestants and their chosen ones will be in the Queens court. Enjoy the
Queen's Brunch and vote for our new Queen. This is one occasion where
the crystal dishes come out and elegance rules. The new Queen will be
elected from young women under the age of 35 and crowned in a ritual
that is our own Ozark Avalon tradition.

The Lord of the Games (played by Sage) will conduct the games where
handsome men and a few brave women compete for the title of champion.
Our May Queen will acknowledge the Champion with ribbons and kisses, but
of course the May King is her choice as always.

Also, don't forget the Sensual Feast Potluck on Saturday evening!!! We
feed each other finger foods in an outdoor setting vaguely reminiscent
of old Rome. Bring fruits, tidbits of cheese or meat, whipped cream or
cheese whiz or other things as your imagination serves you. The night
will see the grand fertility ritual where the land is blessed and we
shall be in the woods all night welcoming summer in.

The retreat begins Friday, May 16. Registration and kitchen open at
noon. Opening circle is at 8 p.m. After welcoming ritual, an alternative
lifestyle workshop and party will be happen at the barn, as well as a
tamer bonfire party. However, you are welcome to camp free Thursday
night and enjoy the beauty of the land.

Ample camping will be available with loud and quiet areas, close to
water and hot showers. Clothing optional. Alcohol is permitted but
please no illegal substances or firearms allowed. You will be asked to
sign a waiver on arrival. There will be a locked gate at this event so
that we may all be safe. If you arrive after gate hours you will have to
call to be let in. A complete schedule will be e-mailed or mailed closer
to the event.

This is an ADULTS ONLY event (18+ years of age) . Everyone will be
carded at the gate. We have new lower registration prices so that more
people may participate but encourage those who can to donate auction
items or cash to the land fund. Registration is $50 in advance and $60
at the gate. $10/night extra to sleep inside the retreat center: LIMITED
indoor accommodations available. Limited work exchange is available for

Workshop Descriptions
River and Joyce Higginbotham
The Magickal Labyrinth
In our teaching we divide magick into four aspects, as a useful tool for learning and skill development. These aspects are Communing, Energy Work, Divination, and Conscious Creation. Which of these speaks to you at this time? In a guided meditation you will travel into the labyrinth of personal and spiritual growth and encounter the magickal essence you need right now. There you will be given both a gift and a challenge to inspire you this year. After the meditation will be time to share and draw a symbol or picture of your experience, which will be placed on an altar and empowered in a brief ritual.

The Beliefs Braid
Join in the magickal working of making a “beliefs braid” that weaves together the power of thought, beliefs, resources, and opportunities as you open to your spiritual growth and pull to yourself those ideas, people, events, books, and other encounters you most need right now. Hemp and leather for the braiding are supplied; you may bring other materials if you prefer. There will be a brief discussion before the magickal working concerning the nature of beliefs and the individual's responsibility regarding them. We will look at examples drawn from Paganism, especially as found in the Seven Principles of Paganism and the God Map. The workshop ends with time for discussion and sharing.

Joyce Higginbotham
Pagan Gregorian Chant
Start your day with a blended form of meditation you won’t find anywhere else. This is a sung meditation in the style of Gregorian chant that uses interfaith and earth-centered texts. Learn a four-line chant based on Gregorian modes and sing beautiful readings drawn from a variety of faith traditions, interspersed with moments of silence. The meditation ends with an opportunity for the group to share its thoughts and insights.

Aislinn Firehawk
The Dance of Life
This is an Active Meditation that involves bringing in the energies of all the directions through the Heart Chakra to create a Medicine Wheel within and without one's body. Wear comfortable clothing

Colorful Journey
Colors surround and permeates our lives. We will begin with a Balancing and Grounding meditation, then look at where each person is based upon the colors they gravitate towards. We will discuss various ways to work with color to improve and enhance our daily lifewalk. We will also cover several ways to help you make use of color to facilitate changes in our lives.

Sacred Flame Within
We will begin by learning what a Fire Clan is and how it works for Aries Rising-Keepers of the Sacred Flame. Then, we will do a Sacred Flame Within a guided meditation. After the meditation, we will have open discussion and questions and answers.

Journey Into the Stones
The stones have tremendous power to heal, divine the future and create magical possibilities. We will start with a Balancing and Grounding meditation, and then move into learning to ascertain the energies of several stones that will be available. Participants are encouraged to bring their own stones to the workshop. Aislinn is a Certified Stone Reader and Laying-on-of-Stones Healer through Oklahoma Psychic Educational Research Association, located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Jeluna
Basic Bellydance
Join Jeluna in her basic Bellydance Class & learn a sensual combination of art and exercise that increases strength, muscle tone, and flexibility & more. Everyone is welcome. Basic movements will combine into a 1 minute "routine". Handouts included! Not your usual aerobics class! Fun Guaranteed!!!

John Circling Heart
Little People of the Ozarks
Once there was a race of little people who have left behind legends, bones, sculptures and an occasional footprint. Learn about the “Little People” of the Ozarks.

Tom Chapin
Magickal Rhythms Drum Workshop
Bring a drum and learn while having great fun. Drummers of all levels welcome.

Join us for a Full Moon and Ritual next Saturday night December 22.
Although we had our official Yule weekend during last weeks snow storm
(thanks to the folks who actually made it- we had a small but wonderful
group of folks present). we will have our usual full moon and Year and A
day Class this weekend for those who can make it during this busy
holiday season. Ritual will feature Sorsha and Orpan and a seasonal
theme . Garb is welcome but not required and we suggest that you dress
warmly with layers and warm dry shoes as the weather has been cold. We
will be outside as always for the ritual. We will have a potluck around
6 pm that will feature a local country ham as well as Yule leftovers.
Ritual will start around 8pm. Afterward stay and join us for fellowship
and revelry. Brings drums if you feel inclined,

This Moon Celebration is free and open to all. Food or monetary
donations are certainly welcome by those who can share. We invite you to
come early to enjoy the beauty of Ozark Avalon in the winter. We have
plenty of sleds and hot chocolate. Again use your best judgment in the
event of further snows- we have been keeping the driveway cleared and
the tractor ready.

Sunday December 23 will be the I second class in our Year and a Day
series. Join Cat, Orpan, and Sorsha for an introduction or review of
energy work- grounding, centering and shielding. This is an essential
magickal skill set and very useful for getting the full experience out
of our rituals here at Ozark Avalon. lass is open to all: a work
commitment of 5 hours or $25 is asked as an energy exchange to the
church and covers all materials, food and lodging. Contact us directly
at rosewise@starband. net to learn more about the series of classes. The
program is being designed so that each segment will be free standing.
Class will start at 11 and last to around 4:00 pm with a break for
lunch.

Directions: Take I-70 west from Columbia about 10 miles to exit 111
which is Highway179 south. Go south or left from exit about 1.2 miles to
the junction of Route V (right) Cumberland Church Road (left) you will
pass the fire station and see the water tower. Do not pass the water
tower. Turn left onto the gravel road Cumberland Church Road and go 1.5
miles to hard right turn with a big white house on the left. Stay on
Cumberland Church Road (straight is dead end) go 1/2 mile to first and
only right hand turn. There is a large Ozark Avalon sign here. Go
straight up main drive to large white house. Please park without
blocking yard or driveway. If you are coming from Boonville or points
Yule party, gift exchange, children welcome December 14-16, 2007

All Meals and Lodging Included Gift Exchange with Father Yule Auction for the Land Fund, Sugar Plum Candy Dipping and Dessert Baking

This weekend, we're coming together as a family around the burning Yule log. A variety of foods will be available for each meal. We will prepare it together in true kitchen witch style. For the Saturday night feast in particular we encourage but don't require those special family dishes you associate with the holidays to compliment our traditional turkey and local country cured ham. We will set aside 4:30-6:00 pm for storytelling and a Father Yule visit. Feast will be followed by a short family friendly outdoor ritual by the Yule fire and then the gift exchange. Friday night is our Sugar Plum party with festive sweets and baked goods. This night is also our open house so if you wish to visit please join us. Festive dress for the evening is encouraged but not required both evenings.

The welcoming ritual to light the Yule log and our main ritual featuring the battle between the Oak and Holly Kings will be out of doors, so please dress appropriately for the weather. We expect Father Yule as a special guest.

All participants are asked to pitch in with the work of our holiday celebration. You may opt for preparing feast, tending the fire, children's activities and clean up..

Registration includes space to throw a sleeping bag. Bed space will be reserved for those with special needs. Those who arrive early may choose location: bed, couch or floor. More private space for adults only is available in the barn. Day passes are an option for those who live close-by. The gift exchange is optional. To participate, please bring a wrapped gift If you prefer to purchase your gift rather than craft one by hand, please don't feel the need to go over $10.

Children are especially welcome at this event. There will be cookie decorating and an ornament making workshop for the kids but limited childcare as this is a family time. Weather permitting we will keep a Yule fire burning all weekend with the Yule log to be lit on Friday at the welcoming ritual and burn throughout the weekend. Stay over Sunday afternoon and join our Year and A day Class for Grounding, Centering and Shielding. This is a great magickal skills basic workshop or refresher. We will state after Closing circle at 11:00 and there is no additional charge.

This year we welcome Sona with Beltana and friends as well as Bellawych, River and Joyce Higginbotham, Artist Micki Mueller, Aislinn FireHawk, LMT and others. In additional to a full slate of entertainment and workshops, we also have a Brewers Faire featuring the best in homemade wines, meads and other brews. In the past we have had vendors of books, art, jewelry, pottery, herbs, candles, stones, swords, magickal tools and clothes. Most have done well and had a great time as well.

We are starting to get registrations and excitement is growing. We still have vending space available. Our vendors have had good experiences in the past. We ask $40 for one table and $65 for two and that if vendors are not registered for the three day hotel event that they pay the day pass rate of $30 for each individual. Your space will be secured as soon as we get your paid registration. See http://www.ozarkavalon.net/events/MagickalHibernation2008.shtml for forms and event registration.
I have attended Circle with my daughter many times. 9 times out of 10, she's asleep before we bless the cakes and ale. Sometimes I've felt like joining her. I'm sure we can all remember a particularly LONG ritual we endured because you don't break circle. Imagine my surprise when she didn't know the first thing about ritual. I thought that with all the circles we had attended together, she would have picked up the basics. I thought about it. Yes she had been to ritual with me, but nothing was explained. The Quarters and God/dess were called and circles cast, but the reasoning behind the actions was something beginners get out of books. Pagan parents and educators learn what is involved in creating a meaningful and fun ritual for children ages 5-10 years old. (This workshop is for adults with previous ritual experience.)
in response to what we have been hearing from the community; that they
would like to see a bigger event here that is Pagan centered. Please

Wear your spring finery for the May Queen's
Brunch and Court! This is one occasion where the crystal dishes come
out and elegance rules. The crown will be passed from Sparro to our new
May Queen in our own Ozark Avalon tradition.

Sean will the Lord of the Games where handsome men and a few brave women
choice as always.

Also, don't forget the Sensual Feast Potluck on Saturday evening! We
feed each other finger foods in an outdoor setting vaguely reminiscent
of old Rome. Bring fruits, tidbits of cheese or meat, whipped cream,
cheese or chocolate or other things as your imagination serves you.

The night will see the grand fertility ritual where the land is blessed
and we shall be in the woods all night welcoming summer in.

The retreat begins Friday, May 18. Registration and kitchen open at
noon. Opening circle is at 8 p.m. After welcoming ritual there will be
an alternative lifestyle party and a tamer bonfire party. However, you
are welcome to camp free Thursday night and enjoy the beauty of the
land.

Ample camping will be available with loud and quiet areas, close to

His phone number is 573.751.3222

From what I understand, the MO legislature has been pretty dramatic with regard to midwifery legislation this session.
What this bill does is make the practice of midwifery legal (not a felony) using the national credential of Certified Professional Midwife that many other states use. If you have specific questions please contact me at finney@lisco.com

I'm a MO native, but actually live in Iowa now--with aspirations to move back in the near future. I am a midwife and would love to see midwifery legal in every state.
CELL PHONE RADIATION
MAY BE KILLING BEES

Scientists claim radiation from handsets are to blame
for mysterious world wide 'colony collapse' of bees

By Geoffrey Lean and Harriet Shawcross
Published: 15 April 2007

It seems like the plot of a particularly far-fetched horror film. But some scientists suggest that our love of the mobile phone could cause massive food shortages, as the world's harvests fail.
They are putting forward the theory that radiation given off by mobile phones and other hi-tech gadgets is a possible answer to one of the more bizarre mysteries ever to happen in the natural world - the abrupt disappearance of the bees that pollinate crops. Late last week, some bee-keepers claimed that the phenomenon - which started in the US, then spread to continental Europe - was beginning to hit Britain as well.
The theory is that radiation from mobile phones interferes with bees' navigation systems, preventing the famously homeloving species from finding their way back to their hives. Improbable as it may seem, there is now evidence to back this up.

Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) occurs when a hive's inhabitants suddenly disappear, leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature workers, like so many apian Mary Celestes. The vanished bees are never found, but thought to die singly far from home. The parasites, wildlife and other bees that normally raid the honey and pollen left behind when a colony dies, refuse to go anywhere near the abandoned hives.
The alarm was first sounded last autumn, but has now hit half of all American states. The West Coast is thought to have lost 60 per cent of its commercial bee population, with 70 per cent missing on the East Coast.

CCD has since spread to Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. And last week John Chapple, one of London's biggest bee-keepers, announced that 23 of his 40 hives have been abruptly abandoned.

Other apiarists have recorded losses in Scotland, Wales and north-west England, but the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs insisted: "There is absolutely no evidence of CCD in the UK."

The implications of the spread are alarming. Most of the world's crops depend on pollination by bees. Albert Einstein once said that if the bees disappeared, "man would have only four years of life left".
No one knows why it is happening. Theories involving mites, pesticides, global warming and GM crops have been proposed, but all have drawbacks.

German research has long shown that bees' behaviour changes near power lines.
Now a limited study at Landau University has found that bees refuse to return to their hives when mobile phones are placed nearby. Dr Jochen Kuhn, who carried it out, said this could provide a "hint" to a possible cause.

Dr George Carlo, who headed a massive study by the US government and mobile phone industry of hazards from mobiles in the Nineties, said: "I am convinced the possibility is real."
The case against handsets
Evidence of dangers to people from mobile phones is increasing. But proof is still lacking, largely because many of the biggest perils, such as cancer, take decades to show up.

Most research on cancer has so far proved inconclusive. But an official Finnish study found that people who used the phones for more than 10 years were 40 per cent more likely to get a brain tumour on the same side as they held the handset.

Equally alarming, blue-chip Swedish research revealed that radiation from mobile phones killed off brain cells, suggesting that today's teenagers could go senile in the prime of their lives.
Studies in India and the US have raised the possibility that men who use mobile phones heavily have reduced sperm counts. And, more prosaically, doctors have identified the condition of "text thumb", a form of RSI from constant texting.

Professor Sir William Stewart, who has headed two official inquiries, warned that children under eight should not use mobiles and made a series of safety recommendations, largely ignored by ministers.
