The Totally Normal Event

Put on by Jeff Mach, this is his last non-Wicked Faire event for some time. Proceeds will be going to SPARC, Summer Program for Academic Reach and Creativity. It is a nonprofit summer program for gifted adolescents, founded by people closely involved with WickedEvents. It is On June 28th and tickets are $20 in advance, $30 at the door - you can't beat this price for the performers who will be there.

The premise: "The Totally Normal Event takes place in a universe much like our own, only one in which most fantasy, mythology, and science fiction is essentially true. The idea is that, under the guise of being some sort of convention for normal humans who dress up, we're actually those creatures of myth, disguised. Not disguised very well, mind you, but still.

Within the event itself is an enormous world of entertainments, performances, workshops, pleasures, panels, parties, and entertainments.

And we're working on a Secret Project to extend the event outside the confines of time and place..."

Performers include The Dresden Dolls, Sxip and the Luminescent Orchestrii, Freezepop, Barry Louis Polisar, Voltaire, Isaac Bonewits, The White Elephant Burlesque Society (which is worth going just to see them), David W. Jacobsen, Psyche Corporation, Lilith Lore, Captain Velocity, Mary Cyn, Daniel the Jester, The Mighty Mike Saga, Aaron Glotfelter (the Erotic Hypnotist) and Princess Sunshine. This is in addition to all the parties being held by the Tribes (of which there are four: The Makers [mad scientists], The Takers [evil overlords], The Hedonists [do I need to explain that one?], and The Talesenders [Harnessing the power of story] and other smaller happenings including a The Silent Auction, Rock Band Ball, Human Bingo, Screening of Straight On Till Morning, and many, many more.

For those with extra cash, there (as always at events) will be loads of vendors! They include: Speampunk Weaponary, Face/Body painting, Ruff Doggie Styles, Sculptoons, BondcoDSM, Oxelot Cyberlox, Nicholas Leather, Secret Shop, Christina Yoder, Queen of the Cat People, Ishta Arts, The Pointy Eared Artisan, For Your Nymphomation, Radiance Bound, Horror Show Jack, DragonWeave Jewelry, The Drum and Whistle, Nightshade Leather, The Five Wits, Griffons Claw Armoury, Brute Force Leather, Private Island Toys, Crystals, Grendel's Den, David Sklar, and Dragonflame Archery.

And don’t forget the after-parties, they rock!

Also, there will be some pre-event happenings on Friday night as the staff and many, many minions will be there early to set up and there are parties in the works.

Austin Pagan Parent Alliance

Hi, I'm Jo and I am relocating permanently to Austin in a very few weeks. In my search for family-friendly pagan groups I found a lot of interest in starting such groups but nothing that seemed to be really family friendly. So I decided to start a tribe and see where it can go. If you are interested, please let me know. I thought this would be a great way to meet other pagan families and make new friends while contributing to our community. Fell free to spread the word and share any ideas you might have.
http://tribes.tribe.net/apfa

Thanks and Blessed Be!

There are many artists in the pagan music scene that are
also involved in the burn culture.

It is for those individuals and others who might be interested
that I post this information.

A new burn is coming to the east coast. It will be held
in southern Pennsylvania, at Four Quarters Farm, just
across the Maryland border. The event will be held over
Memorial Day weekend.
Four Quarters is the site that has a ring of standing stones,
and a very distinct pagan atmosphere. It will be a wonderful
place for a burn.

If you are interested, more infomation can be found at: http://www.wickermanburning.org

I wish you a blessed Ostara and a fantastic spring.

Singing Back the Snakes, and why....

I hope you are ready! Tis the season!!

I have often been asked why Snakes Rising is called Snakes Rising. There are many reasons and associations, to be honest. Here are a few.

1) The return of paganism via the neo-pagan revolution. In case you haven't picked it up yet... the group has always been mostly "staffed" by neo-pagans and pagan sympathizers. The serpent was a symbol of the Olde Religion. (As an aside from a pagan that hails from the Celtic Isle geneologically..... I personally do not appreciate the idea of the "snakes" being driven from my ancestral homelands.) Here is a link to a song about this very subject, by Isaac Bonewitz:
moonpathcuups.org/rituals/snakes.htm

2) The practice of Yoga and the honoring of Shiva. About half of all the people who have performed with Snakes are practitioners of Yoga. Including Tantra, Kundalini, Hatha, and Bhakti. Here is a link to "The Myth of Manasa" about whom you will sometimes hear us chant:
www.accessnewage.com/article...ATH2.HTM

3) Honoring of Goddess. In many cultures She is associated with the serpent. The serpent is associated with rebirth and reincarnation and the cyclic nature of life. This poem was written by Jezibell, about dancing as Snake Goddess. www.shira.net/poem23-snake.htm

Hey, Jezibell is now one of my Tribe Friends! I found her moderating this tribe:
tribes.tribe.net/paganmusicanddance

4) Protection and conservation of the habitat, including the serpent. Many of our dancers are, in fact, snake dancers. As such, they have a soft spot for the species' they live with. And they want to educate the public about them as they dance. Serpents are maligned in our culture. That is something we'd like to see an end to. You can find a listing of snakes indigenous to Ohio here:
www.ohiodnr.com/publicatio...default.htm
Become an ally! Stop screaming when you see one of them... especially if you are around a child. Phobias are NOT our friends! Try singing instead. "Bring back, oh bring back, oh bring back the snakes to me....."

Hi, all... Is anyone planning anything for Yule? I was thinking, since it's the Solstice (=Sun standing still) that a dance could incorporate a period of motionlessness, music a period of silence. What do you think?

I see some familiar faces in this group, as well as some I don't know, so welcome to all of you, and here's some info about me:

I am the High Priestess of Kyklos ton Asterion Coven and Sirens' Sanctuary Open Women's Circle, also co-teacher of the Pagan Way Grove with my Klingon partner Joe. I am also a bellydancer, writer, actress, singer and drummer, and have created Pagan-themed music and dance both for ritual and performance. My last major project was writing and performing in an original Pagan musical theatre piece, Inanna, Journey of Darkness and Light, and, if I ever get a production budget, I'd like to turn my Musical Tribute to Ancient Egypt into a theatrical show as well. I sang and drummed for several years with Four Winds Earth Chorus and am currently working on a new female chorus with members of Sirens' Sanctuary.

I started this group to share my Pagan creativity and also to find out what others are doing, so please tell me about your projects, what Pagan music and dance mean to you, and whatever else you find artistically and spiritually meaningtul regarding music and dance.

Also, I define Pagan music and dance in terms of theme, not specific style, so in general Pagan music and dance would be based on mythology, nature, other spiritual themes that are NOT Christian, Jewish or Muslim. So Pagan music could be folk, rock, New Age, country, rap; dance could be bellydancing, modern dance, circle dance - whatever form suits the individual or group expression.

BB for now - I'll be away for Thanksgiving and won't be online for about a week, but hope to hear from you in the meantime.

Musical Tribute to Ancient Egypt

The Tribute consists of songs originally written for a series of Egyptian rituals and developed into concert form. I wrote most of them, one in collaboration with harpist Somna M. Bulist, and Kai Mera's flute really enhanced them. The Gallery, a warm and lovely room with wood paneling and red plush chairs, provided a perfect setting for our mystical acoustics. Thanks to all who came out to support us.
