Phallic Worship & Dildo Rituals...

Hiya' guys. Sorry for such a blatantly blunt subject header, but... I was wondering if, in your years of study, if you've come across some truly excellent books (that are still academically sound today) re: the ubiquetous theme of phallic worship with bazillions of examples! *G* This (as well as the next query) is a personal research project of mine.

Also, I'm looking for some GREAT research material that I may turn to concerning the ritual and religious use of dildos! According to the History Channel, on the isle of Lesbos, Sappho and her followers used dildos in religious or for ritual purposes. I wonder if dildos were religious or ritually used in the cult of Dionysos because he was known to have penetrated Himself with such a device carved from fig wood, I believe. Moreover, it'd be interesting to locate similar ritual or religious dildo-centred practices within Phallic-God cults, such as Priapus, for example!

Ya' know, this reminds me of a discussion me and a bunch of folks were having in High School, during art class: Someone mentioned that the candles made by the nuns were used as dildos! This may be, but I've not read anything to verify it, yet.

BTW, something fascinating just came to mind: I don't believe I've ever read anything regarding the Tradition of the traditional Gardnerian phallic tipped wand. Where did it come from? How did it get into Gardnerianism via Gerald. And, what evidence might answering these questions prove when applied to the grand scheme of modern Pagan witchcraft's [Wicca's] history? That is, could it be evidence for something older than what scholars are willing to allow for?

Basically, I'd love top learn more about these topic in a historiographic setting.

Take Care,

I have a sort of theory about the origins of a lot of Neo-Pagan Craft equipage.

But it's not one that looks toward the deeps of history.

My sense is that many of the early Neo-Pagan Crafters hand-crafted
their tools and mixed in a bunch of items that seemed appropriate and
were accessible in an attic or a jumble sale or some such. They were,
many of them, collectors of magical items and students of magical lore,
    as well.

So it's quite possible that they took old ideas about tools or items and
    made them at home.

In my limited experience with Garderianism, I've found it difficult to date
the introduction of lots of particulars.

    I don't think that I'm alone in finding Neo-Pagan Craft chock-a-block with
    examples of bricolage.

In fact, Ronald Hutton, for one, has correctly observed that Wicca and modern Paganism in general can trace their magical roots back to late-antique Theurgy/Hermeticism. Pretty much anything that can come under the heading of "sympathetic magic" is simply a modern continuation of Hellenic magic going back at least to the dawn of the classical era.

Tools, costumes, ritual formulae, etc, change over time. But modern Pagans are very much like the main character in Apuleius' Metamorphoses (2nd century AD) - and what he was up to was very much like whatever it was that Socrates learned from Diotima and/or Aspasia and/or Theodote (5th century BC).

Matthew Dickies dense book "Magic and Magicians in the Greco-Roman World" is a good source on this subject.
