Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could direct me towards any site, books or articles that deal, in particular, with the Cult of Evita [ie. Eva Peron]? Sadly, I haven't been able to find much of anything, such as its expression, offerings, etc. As a Socialist, she's something of a hero for me... ;o)

OK - this is tangentially related, and also kind of a cool coincidence: Just last week I was in one of the local "Botanicas" (shops catering to people who are into Santeria - there are about a dozen of them in the DC area), and I saw (and, of course, purchased) a candle dedicated to "Saint" Pancho Villa! It was right there with all the other candles devoted to the traditional "Orishas", as well as lots other "Saints", including lots of straight-up Catholic Saint candles, but also candles for "Santa Muerte" Allan Kardec, etc. The candle for Pancho Villa actually has a prayer on it - in both English and Spanish. It's at home, though - I'll try to remember it tonight.

I really thought it was fascinating, but at the same time totally reasonable, to see that their is a cult around a famous revolutionary "of the people". Villa's candles, btw, were right next to the candles for "Oggun", the patron Orisha of warriors - and, it would seem, revolutionaries!

Actually, that *IS* germane, because I am also in the process of creating a formula in association with my Socialist beliefs, "for the people"! So, any Saints and orisha, or other deities that I can look into are all the better: eg. Quan Yin; Hermes/Mercury; Lakshmi; and Ganisha, etc.

"Pancho Villa is one of the most recognizable leaders of the Mexico Revolution. This civil war, which lasted from 1910-1921, was fought to curb U.S. corporate interests and to redistribute agricultural lands, especially for indigenous communities. It was a social revolution that reasserted popular culture and the value of "Mexican-ness." It was also a prolonged, violent conflict that spread death and hunger throughout Mexico, spurring migrants north, mostly into El Paso, Los Angeles, and other historically Mexican U.S. cities. With them came ideas, images, and language for organizing laborers and the rural poor. These ideas and images percolated in the popular culture of Mexican Americans and reappear in the art and activism of Chicanos in the 1960s and 1970s. On the back of this candle depicting Villa are prayers written in English and Spanish asking him to grant the petitioner some of the insight and prowess that enshrined this bandit, social revolutionary, and media star in the mythology of modern Mexico."

PRAYER To the martyr spirit of Pancho Villa Great Revolutionary General

In the Name of God our Lord I invoke the spirits that they protect you so that you may help me. As well as you helped the NEEDY in the earthly world. As well as you conquered the POWERFUL. This I request of you your spiritual protection, so that may free me of all evil and you give me the necessary spirit and sufficient valor to confront the most difficult things that are presented to me present in this life. Amen
