I just wanted to stress to those of you coming out to this sacred desert site - Please remember throughout your visit that this is a fragile ecosystem. Life clings tenuously to the desert floor. Once disturbed, it may never return. So please, be conscious of the life underneath you: the brush, creosote, native plants. And be responsible. They may look like just weeds at first but for those of us who have been here for awhile, we know them and see their beauty and vitality and know how precious it all is. Watch where you're stepping, where you're camping. Make sure that your footprint leaves the least of lasting traces. Don't throw cigarette butts or trash on the ground, park your vehicles where the ground and plants won't be irrevocably harmed, pack out what you pack in, be respectful so that this site may be a sustainable resource to all of us in years to come. Thank you. Can't wait to see all of you. NAMASTE!!

Re: Fragile Environment
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 8:16 AMThanks for putting this up Kinky - and I must confess to you here that I ran over a Yucca plant with the fire truck when I was moving her into position the other day. Sorry. So I took the broken off piece and spray painted the tips of the swords day-glo orange, and mounted it on top of a similarly painted (but dead) propane tank and now have a beautiful 'potted plant' on dispaly in the Xara-like FreakyTiki Lounge.
So word to you all: don't let this happen to you! Don't run over plants, don't move those pesky plants to pitch your tent, and watch where you dance.
Ciggerette butts are a special problem - ashtrays here don't work - that is, when the winds pick up (as they always do) the ashtrays all get emptied - scattered all around, so smoke 'em if you've got 'em, but pack 'em in, and pack 'em out!
But do enjoy the local flora and fauna. The wildflowers are subtly magnificent. I picked a boquet out on the property yesterday that boasts ten different flowers - including some white iris, pink geranium, yellow clover, some succulents blooms and some of those little yellow and blue and red flowers that poke up out of the desert floor only occasionally in springtimes like this where theres been several rains. Amazing.
Thanks! -
