-The job -
Keep a list of performers who sign up.
Warm up the crowd, nicely tell them to applaud for EVERYONE - make it a nice safe place to play
Introduce performers
Maintain performance limits (eg three songs or 10 minute sets)
Keep us interested during performers changes - tell a joke or something
Play your own thing last, if you're a performer.

Oh, btw, the open mic is for anyone, not JUST local JT musicians. We are 'showcasing' them, but it's good to cross polinate.

The coolest part for me personally is that I know almost all of you! And now I get to meet the rest of you! How lucky can a guy be?
With much love,
and still all smile,

Please follow these directions to Indy's house - Google maps and others point to the wrong place :-(

First, get to Joshua Tree, via Route 62, locally known as 29 Palms Highway. The main intersection in 'downtown' Joshua Tree is Park Boulevard. It's where you turn if you're going to the National Park.

From Park Boulevard, head East on 29 Palms Highway, to the next light at Sunburst. Turn Left on Sunburst.
Turn Right on Golden (it's where the pavement ends on Sunburst).
Turn Left on Border (you won't miss this turn).
Go about 4 miles on Border.
Turn Right on Winters (it's a paved road, the best landmark is a bunch of dark red shipping containers with 'Huyndai' written on them is on the right, about a block before Winters. If you miss the turn at Winters, you'll come to a sharp left turn at Reche Road. Turn around and go back about 1/2 mile)
Go down Winters till the pavement ends and it becomes a dirt road. Go about two tenths of a mile on the dirt, and turn right on SunBeam.
Go about two tenths of a mile, and Indy's is the only house on the right, with a wooden fence in the front, and a Fire Truck parked in the back.
Sweet Pea and Ken were here the last couple of days helping with party prep. We got the big red metal box cut off the top deck of Ruby (thanks Ken for your two days of sweaty labor with the grinder and chisels), so she now has a nice smooth stage - now we just have to cut and glue the carpet onto it.
We finished cleaning and painting in the Tiki Lounge yesterday (whew!), and started with the decorating. Sweet Pea and Ken painted really cool designs on big palm fronds with black light paint, then we hung them on the walls and from the ceiling - too cool. I've got the Ruben's tubes on one wall, where vidio will be projected too, and we're gonna set up a little stage in the TikiLounge for some more quieter and intimate performances. Just room enough for a guitar player or two.
We're getting real excited about seeing all our old burner friends, and our new ones too! So many people have let us know thery're coming and participating - wow - gonna be some big time fun here in the desert.
Our aerial performers are coming out the weekend of the 22nd to do the rigging on the aerial boom, and we're going to use that weekend for final party prep and decoration. We'll have the sound and lights up, and use that weekend to work out the bugs. You're welcome to come help with the toiling, and any help you feel like providing would be most welcom, just shoot me an e-mail indyburner at hotmail dot com. I've 1 and 1/2 guestrooms, plenty of floor crash space, and unlimited camping space.

Life clings tenuously to the desert floor. Once disturbed, it may never return. So please, be conscious of the life underneath you: the brush, creosote, native plants. And be responsible. They may look like just weeds at first but for those of us who have been here for awhile, we know them and see their beauty and vitality and know how precious it all is. Watch where you're stepping, where you're camping. Make sure that your footprint leaves the least of lasting traces. Don't throw cigarette butts or trash on the ground, park your vehicles where the ground and plants won't be irrevocably harmed, pack out what you pack in, be respectful so that this site may be a sustainable resource to all of us in years to come. Thank you. Can't wait to see all of you. NAMASTE!!

~Participation Mystique~ March 28th, 29th, 30th ~There's no one here but us~ Won't you come out and play? It's the last weekend in March - as close was we could come to April Fools Day! This party is as a thanks and celebration of our collective participation, 'old skool' And as Indy's Housewarming party in Joshua Tree ~ "Participation Mystique" ...if you've read some of my other blogs here on myspace, you'll find out about what's happening (like with the Fire Truck!) out here in the middle of the Mojave - just up the road from the National Park and just a couple hours from SD and LA... Come participate! Bring what you got and put it up! Share your wonderfullness with all of us - be amazed and amused, amazing and amusing! So many wonderful people have already made their plans to be here and do their thing - our wonderful friends: so far: ~DJ Wolfie ~The Original Booty Burglars (with as many ex-Seratonins as they can find...) ~DJ Jack Tripper ~The Technomania Circus ~Zircon and Wish! ~ Amazing (and incredibly sexy!) aerial performers - initiating our new 75' aerial platform!! ... and maybe giving a basic aerial workshop! ~The Warlords of Rock and Roll Thunder and Lightning ~The Chi Club ~Seisen's Temple ~Tarot with Jorel ~SMokeBlower Video Production We're waiting to hear back from several other friends already about their participation, and I'll post it right here: as people jump in. (or out:-( Would you like to be on this list as it develops? Your are invited and encouraged to participate! Lemme know. IndyBurner@hotmail.com or 760-898-6128 (cell in the desert: sketchy) Sweet Pea is taking on organization issues, so feel free to talk with her too about any issues questions or concerns. Again, this will be on the last weekend in March: from Friday March 28th through Sunday March 30th. Plenty room for camping, parking, RVing. We're on the grid with electricity and water. On Friday evening / night, we'll showcase local talent - of whcih there's a ton here in JT, followed late night by crowd sensitve and kick ass DJ's - till 4am. We'll have 'quiet time' from 4am to Noon - nothing amplified, 'K? Bring yer headphones if ya wanna boogie all night. We won't laugh at you. We'll be sleeping. Plenty of time for your participation on Saturday - Do what you do! Give a workshop. Set up some interactive art. Demonstrate your cooking skills. Play music. Be a 'designated friend' or 'special helper' (that's as close as we'll come to 'security'). 'Cuz remember, there's no one here but us. And how do we feel about us?? At noon on Saturday, we'll start the Elysium-inspired pool party, with ambient chill and potluck crepes at the outdoor kitchen. We'll need some people to help out for some specific tasks - running lighting (e.g. pointing the spotlights), helping with the sound system, keeping everything up and running, stage management, general toilers. Lemme know if there's something you'd like to jump in on. Saturday night will be scheduled for more 'big time entertainment' with the main Firetruck Stage hosting amazing aerial performers, party-fun rock and roll band friends, the best DJ's in the world, both here and in Xara-like chill space "TikiDelia". Shit, I can put up some glow-y jungle foliage in my garage and let great DJ's play - can anyone bring sod? :-) Again we'll shut off amps at 4am (or 4:30 if everybody groans). Sunday morning we'll start our sonic morning with world sacred music in a Kirtan for all who'd care to join in some joyful spiritual chanting singing and meditation. Perhaps someone would like to do a tantra puja on Sunday mid-day? Massage, bodywork, sound healing? Acoustic music will rule on Sunday. So that's the outline kids, (and btw, 21 and up strict w ID no arguments and no whining. now go to your room!) Opps, sorry, Some of the bands would like to pass the hat to help cover gas - can you help a brotha out? Otherwise, outside of the maner in which you participate, there is no charge - hey, I'm throwing a party, 'K? (otoh, if this goes well, and it's possible, we'd like to follow up with further tickted events at this venue. See? First one's free, then yer hooked!) BUT - I'd like you to please let me know you're coming so I can have the right number of porta- potties, y'know? PPPPPPPPPPPLLLLLLEEEZZZZZEEEE Send me an e-mail - right now! - or when you know you're gonna come. We'll probaly limit at like 300 people, if it comes to that. IndyBurner@hotmail.com ~ Please include whatever info you may have now about anything you'd like to do here performance wise - so that we can maintain an orderly chaotic schedule. Thanks for playing~ ps did i mention the pool (solar heated, duh!) has a diving board? ::--))

Any way you feel into.
Right now, we're imagining some people who would want to help with the sound and lighting. We have three 'stages', each with a sound system and lighting, from complex dmx controlled lighting with 12 channel PA for the sound, to a simple DJ set-up by the pool. The TikiLounge has both DJ and small band stage set-up, with mostly blacklights and 'party lights'. Anyone already familiar with working sound and light mixing boards would be most appreciated. We could use both leaders and helpers in those regards.
In terms of set-up and decorating, we'll have that all done before the party starts - so if you have an urge to help with that, c'mon up the weekend before (see previous post).
During the party, we'd like to have greeters help everyone find the best place to park and camp, and checks off the guest list. We are on private property, and we want to respect our neighbors property, so there's certain land we should and should not be on. YOU can learn to be a greater in 10 minutes or less, then hit the gate for a shift?
We don't need no stinkin' security, b/c there's no one here but us, and 'security' is an illusion at best. So, we would encourage anyone with proclivities of providing security to call yourselves 'designated helpers' or some such. Perhaps carrying tweezers in case someone sleeps with a cactus?
And of course, the main reason I believe we can have such a party, is that we all clean up after ourselves. What a concept! Radical! Personal impact mitigation. LNT. What ever, but thanks in advance for leaving it like you found it.
Oh, and let's avoid comidification as best we can. I know some of the artists / musicians would like to offer you recordings of their works and stuff like that, and pass the hat to help cover them, and that's cool. But lets say 'no vending' in the sense that someone's coming to make money. Maybe next time, but this is just a party :-) Let's practice the gift economy, as a minor offset to disaster capitalism.

Finally, it would thrill me no end if each of you (who have read this far) would commit to yourself to participate in some way that brings joy and life to our gathering, and to do so in colaboration with someone you've never worked / played with before. See if you can hook up with someone / s with whom you can generate a synergy, and create something colaboratively. Spontanaeity and improvization are encouraged. Just a thought ...
