So, you think unopposed dictatorship is better than a multi-party system with checks and balances would be?

Theres a reason they call it the BMorg. Derived from the Borg, the machine-hive-mind from Star Trek, constantly absorbing new beings, establishing complete mind control, stripping them of individuality.

I think that would pull the burner community closer together instead of polarizing it more.

what makes you think a second man would be a) noticed or b) not polarize people if it was noticed? ("all the cool kids are going to the *red* burn.." "fuck you, all *my* friends are going to the Blue burn..")

Besides, as Margaret's well-written thoughts in the hijacked thread layed out, focusing on the Man keeps us in the shallow water anyway.

a few ways Burning Man participants are not like dems & repubs

    1) dems & repubs don't start experimental subcultures in the desert

    2) neither dems nor repubs were created by the Cacophony Society.

    3) neither dems nor repubs currently have an unelected leader with total control over mony aspects of life in their community. Although the Republicans used to, from 2000 to 2004. So, perhaps there are some parallels between Larry and George. The Deciders.

    4) dems & repubs don't give out Fucko awards for pranking, random surreality, iconoclasm, and generally being annoying. (although some of them seem to think they can win elections that way;)

    5) dems & repubs don't think crossing the border illegally is funny. (RFTB! Arriva!)

    6) dems & repubs don't debate whether setting a corporate symbol on fire is laudable performance art.

    7) dems & repubs do debate on a level playing field. we aren't currently allowed any meaningful debates about any decisions at Burning Man.

    8) Burning man doesn't have term limits

a few ways in which some Burning Man participants are like Dems & Repubs.

      1) Republicans tend toward religious fanaticism, censorship, privatising functions that should be public, no-bid contracts, and back-room money deals, much like the BMorg. Democrats tend to support free press, labor rights and transparent government, much like BMorg's (as-yet-unnamed) opponents do.

      2) Now that I'm thinking about it, America's Decider and Burning Man's Decider seem more and more alike.. both have no vision of their own, parrot the ideas of others, try to convince people the opposition doesn't exist or isn't viable, rely on corrupt (illegal?) lockstep party machinery to maintain control.

      3) Republicans scream about terrorists, BMorgers scream about arsonists. Both cynically use fear-mongering to justify bullying.

    > polarizing

the reality is, the Burning Man crowd has been polarized for at least ten years. Some folks have been able keep their heads in the sand about this, because one voice has been very loud and totally dominant, while other was voluntarily quiet at first (for the sake of unity - an act of goodwill that was abused) and has been marginalized and virtually unheard. It is time to stop sweeping it all under the rug.

Personally, I'd rather have no government. It worked much better.
But what we have right now *is* a government - a self-appointed, dictatorial and self-congratulatory corporate government with no separations of power. Like a fanatic Neocon king with no congress, supreme court or constitution. Taxation without representation.

In 2007, Black Rock City is the largest city in the United States with an unelected government. Its a company town in the worst sense of the word. BMorg doesn't even have to bribe public officials to get their way. There are no public officials.

If we can't go back to anarchy, then what we need is democracy. Black Rock City needs a government.

      Another parallel:

Karl Rove - called 'Bush's brain' by friend and foe alike - believed in a system with only one voice without opposition, and worked to create it.

Marian Goodell - called "Larry's brain" by friend and foe alike - believes in a system with only one voice without opposition, and works to maintain it.

All healthy government has checks and balances.

To be a viable healthy community, BRC needs a counterweight to the BMorg.
      It needs an opposition.

From the looks of things, he's just an everyday wacko

(10-29) 12:39 PDT SAN FRANCISCO - The man accused of setting the Burning Man on fire four days early has been arrested for allegedly planning to set Grace Cathedral ablaze, San Francisco police said today.

Paul David Addis, 35, was arrested on the cathedral steps at 11:40 p.m. Sunday by police who said they had been tipped that someone intended to set fire to the Episcopal church, police spokesman Sgt. Steve Mannina said.

How ya like yer boy now BERNIE?

      SOLAR:

Do you generally condemn people based on an "accusation"?

Wasn't that the way that the salem witch hunts were run?

Interesting how all posts by Bernie have stopped now that Addis is behind bars.

Bail at $488,000 indicates that there is more to it than a "prank". Apartment searched after a warrant is issued. Pershing County anticipated to revoke his bail . . .

Feel free to keep pissing in the wind
