What, no one has anything to say about the latest allegations, namely threatening Sacred Heart high school students Sept 8th, and brandishing an air rifle at a Seattle hotel Sept 27, for which he spent the night in jail and had to cancel his Seattle performance?

http://www.sfweekly.com/2007-11-14/news/burning-man-arsonist-paul-addis-backstory-murder-threats-arrests/full

The article closes with, "Ticketholders for Addis' Seattle shows, incidentally, received full refunds and apologies that the play had been canceled due to "the actor's illness." Sadly, this excuse may be all too true."

"On Friday, Addis agreed to plead no contest to only misdemeanor charges of fireworks possession and altering an imitation firearm, in return for three years of court probation, according to public defender Tal Klement."

"Addis was earlier charged in Nevada for allegedly setting the Burning Man effigy on fire before it was scheduled to be torched at the annual counterculture festival held each Labor Day weekend in Nevada's Black Rock Desert. Addis is now scheduled to return to Nevada to face those charges, according to Klement."

Ok, I just reviewed the comments here and at the other PA tribe.
I understand why these tribes were started (in recognition of the original action. I'm one of those who got it.)

Its kinda stupid that other people come here to pick at the guy - SO f*ing MUCH.
Ok,so you don't like the guy, or what he did, or whatever.
This is getting incredibly boring.

You obviously have alot of >nit-picking< energy.
Do something USEFUL with it, direct it at some government/group/event/organization/company that could use the dissection?
ALOT of things could really USE that obsessive picking energy you have.
Get vocal about the mismanagement in the USFWS, USFS, or the USDA.
Write your local congressman/congresswoman.
Go fight the local industrial company that is polluting your region.
Go protest the war, at least!
Or go volunteer at your local animal shelter.

Do something USEFUL with all that ill-harnessed energy.
You are f*ing boring me.

Why I support Paul Addis

When I declare my support for Addis, this doesn’t make me a "follower". It means I understand the history of Black Rock City, and therefore I understand what he did and why.

When I declare my support for Addis, its not because I think he has no faults, its because I think he has a valid point.

When I declare my support for Addis, I declare my support not for randomly or hatefully destroying other people's art, but for poetically appropriate good-humored pranks aimed with care at a symbol of corporate excess.

When I declare my support for Addis, its not because I believe everybody should try to burn the man whenever they want, its because i believe all BRC citizens should have a voice in these and other BRC decisions - not just "The Decider" in his company town, as it is now and has been for a long time.

When I declare my support for Addis, its not because I think there should be no compensation for any damage, its because I think the BMorg has massively overreacted and is now hypocritically taking advantage of laws not designed for the Burning Man environment, in order to pursue vendetta.

When I declare my support for Addis, I do not negate the well-meaning contributions of other good people, I simply advocate that Addis’ well-meaning and thoughtful contribution be acknowledged as well. He loves BRC at least as much as you do, and he –along with many others- is fighting to save its soul.

When I declare my support for Addis, I declare my support not for putting lives in danger with thoughtless destruction but for risking one’s own safety while taking care not to unduly risk others (that is, not to risk others beyond those risks inherent to their chosen environment).

When I declare my support for Addis, I declare my support for free speech in all venues related to Burning Man, and my opposition to censorship, heavy-handedness and 'controlling the spin' as has been BMorg's corporate practice for many years.

When I declare my support for Addis, I acknowledge that BRC under BMorg’s control has forgotten its roots and is loosing touch with its founding principles, depriving the new friends of an essential part of the Burning Man experience and also of the knowledge of what they missed – even as the ticket price has been jacked up tenfold. The new kids are being cheated and I support finding creative ways of rectifying the injustice.

When I declare my support for Addis, I declare my support not necessarily for Addis himself to occupy the currently-non-democratic semi-mythical post of Mayor of BRC, rather i declare my support for an open, democratic process of governance of Black Rock City (if there must be governance, which there currently is) - and, wherever possible, for BRC to take steps to reclaim its birthright of non-governance.

When I declare my support for Addis, it is an acknowledgement that his was not an isolated act of some thoughtless, clueless mean-spirited drunk, but is part of a watershed moment, a time of long-overdue examination, contemplation and action in terms of Black Rock City's history and future.

Dave says:
> You guys have fallen into politics. Just letting you know that what you are doing is not different than the Democrats vs. the Republicans.

So, you think unopposed dictatorship is better than a multi-party system with checks and balances would be?

Theres a reason they call it the BMorg. Derived from the Borg, the machine-hive-mind from Star Trek, constantly absorbing new beings, establishing complete mind control, stripping them of individuality.

> If you want to help me in promoting the idea of burning 2 men each year at burning man please let me know…
I think that would pull the burner community closer together instead of polarizing it more.

what makes you think a second man would be a) noticed or b) not polarize people if it was noticed? ("all the cool kids are going to the *red* burn.." "fuck you, all *my* friends are going to the Blue burn..")

Besides, as Margaret's well-written thoughts in the hijacked thread layed out, focusing on the Man keeps us in the shallow water anyway.

>>It would kind of suck to see the man roped off behind security checkpoints like everything else that is "valuable".<<

A feller said this over on that other thread, there.

I can't say it "inspired" me, per se, but it's the first inkling of a twitch in my BM groin for quite some time.

I can't think of a more fitting symbol for what BM has become and what it means to me now. If there were two burns, as also (hilariously) discussed elsewhere, one could be The Man Past who might be covered in ludicrously unsafe ragged bails of barbed wire and exploding decommissioned chemical weapons chemically transforming into Silly String, and the other - the big one, the popular one, the one that everyone is coming to see - can be roped off with burgundy velvet and patrolled by surly dudes in safari-style fishing hats.

Don't let my jocular tone distract you from the finger-wagging emphasis I'm subliminally installing into your mind. This shit is important enough to me to have made me actually weep, so, if you're going to post to this thread, you should know that I am not some fucking E-tarded dancer-to-crap-machine-music. Yep: you glowies and meth-bunnies ruined my burn. Paul Addis isn't a prankster, or a vandal, or an arsonist, or a party-pooper. He's a fucking god. I hope he rides roughshod over The Man of My Dreams for the rest of time.

Thank you.

Cordon The Man. Best idea in years.

I think theres an incredible contrast in the dialogue Addis sparked, that should be documented.

For the record, I think it will be worthwhile to collect examples of the kind of threats that are being made by the kool-aid drinkers toward Addis and Addis supporters.
So, next time you run across a particularly nauseating example of neandertholery, please post it here. Not just name-calling - it'll be unnavigable we post all of that. Just actual threats and "I want to..", "he should be butt-raped" kind of stuff, along with the URL of the thread it came from.

Personally I am very split on this entire debate and cultural movement that is happening around PA's burning of the man early.

I think the way that this has split people is incredibly fascinating and fucking amazing example of the Microcosm that is BM. BM despite its flaws or strengths is proving to be a model for our society in so many ways.

The split between PA supporters and Hatersz is pretty interesting when compared to our 2 party system, as someone has already pointed out, and its very difficult to not get pigeon holed into one or the other. At least in this case it seems.

Did he make a statement? I think so. Was it a valuable one? I'm not so sure. Using destruction as a means for revolution, while deliciously tempting, seems to merely repeat a cycle that ends up getting alot of people riled up and hurt. Even killed.
Whats funny (in that not actually funny but kinda scary kind of way) is how many people are spouting INCREDIBLY hateful and violent energy at each other around this.
This event, and BM in general, seems to bring out a fanatical side to people that is a far cry from the assumed aware and innovative society that I perceived when I first attended in 2001.

I am seeing more and more people insulting each other around maligning what "BM is about". Am I alone in finding that incredibly contradictory? Anyhow...

One thing I do feel strongly about is that a very good friend of mine had a year of his time wasted when his project was cordoned off due o the man being burned early. "The Giving Tree" was an innovative project that included a synthetic tree that used sonar to locate a participant in its field of influence and would then proceed to use an incredibly complex piece of software to hold a conversation with who ever came up to it. It would record responses to add to it's database of words and phrases, while also using frequency analysis technology to "judge" the emotional content of a statement which would change the course of the conversation as the tree decided whether you where a friend or not.
My friend worked very hard on that and he was unable to share it with community. He wasn't hurt physicaly. In a sense he did lose some resources that where allocated to a certain unmet outcome, and he is actually not that upset about it. He's a good man :)
But regardless, an artist was effected in a negative way and I believe that matters. Especially at BM.

I could ramble on and on, but i will end with this: Instead of arguing about who is stupid, who is less then, who is right, who is wrong, or who should be punished or hurt in what way, I would like to suggest that we slow down and see and feel how we effect each other. I don't think that course of action will hurt anyone or infringe on anyones freedom in any way shape or form, assuming that actually matters to most. After that, i don't know. But it couldn't hurt, and maybe one less person in the world would stop howling for the blood and suffering of another.

In Law, there are terms. just, terms In-Law. legal definitions. blah.

why is burningman.com describing paul addis as the "'07 BMAN ARSONIST..." linked off the homepage of the site ( http://burningman.com/news/arsonist_07.html )?

"arsonist" is a term In Law applied to people convicted of arson, specifically. no one is an arsonist who has not been convicted of arson.

my question is - could the LLC's label of "arsonist" as applied to paul addis within the site's News section equal defamation? To me, it reads that way.

What the hell?

I'm sick of all the people wishing prison rape for Paul Addis.
What the hell is wrong with people?
Yet ANOTHER one:
http://bm.tribe.net/thread/8a2ef524-5fde-4d87-959d-9ce524f1b161
re:"Since I think that PA is going to spend some time in jail, regardless of whether you think he's a folk hero or a fool, I think he needs to get used to the idea of getting pounded in the ass. We're not talking that sweet, tender caress you get over at Jiffy Lube, the decency of a reach around, or some good giving game butt action. PMITA prison for Paul, and the sooner somebody can start shoving stuff up his pooper to get him ready, the better. Be a friend. Give Paul a little penis in the pooper please. "

threats of violence

It is very important for anyone who reads a post implying a threat of violence to note the person posting and the thread the threat is posted in.

Report these posts to the Tribe monitors and to the authorities. Threats of violence are terroristic threats, and it would please me to no end to learn that some terribly excited Burners were held responsible for their words.

I've about had it up past my eyebrows with the zealous freaks who would talk of lynching a man over his ideas.

As for letter writing campaigns, both pro and con Addis, think twice. You could add fuel to the fires that burn against Burning Man. If a fraction of the promised letters go out, the powers that be could see the true harm the festival is perpetuating.

So to you folks who are inspired to violence over the desecration of their religious symbol, the man, had best think about what they say or do. Sane, authoritative minds are watching you.

One day, a bunch of people started building a little house. It was a beautiful little house full of beautiful things. They invited their friends to come to the house. The friends thought it was so beautiful that they decided to add on to the beautiful little house and bring more beautiful little things inside of it. Everyone was happy.

Each year, new friends came to the beautiful little house. It was getting quite big, but it was still beautiful. People added so many new rooms and filled them with even more beautiful things. Eventually, even strangers were drawn to the little house and wanted to add to it to. It was all good.

Somebody then decided that there were so many people that perhaps it would be best if some ground rules were laid down and everybody had to contribute to the power and sewer bills. Anything for the beautiful little house.

Eventually, someone installed stained glass windows. Nice looking, if out of place, but there was room in the additions that were being built. An organ arrived the next year (or maybe it was 100 pianos). The following year it was a set of pews under a pavilion in the back. And then an alter, or was it called a base was built? Strange out of place things things kept arriving and more rules were created. Not to mention that more money was asked of the inhabitants. But nobody said "no" because "no" had never been uttered before.

Then one day somebody noticed that a corporate logo had been erected on top of the beautiful little house which was now a giant, tacky cathedral. All the people who had built the little beautiful house complained. The people who were collecting tithings said nothing. They had become priests. They liked the change. The people who were building a cathedral around the beautiful little house were now happily filling the pews and listening to sermons and paying tithings. They liked being servants. That was not the why the little house was built. They told the home builders to leave if they didn't like it. Many already had.

The cathedral worshippers had dismanted the beautiful little house in their rush to build a cathedral. It no longer existed and all that was inside was gone as well. Stolen, destroyed or lost. The beautiful little house was no more. Just an empty shell full of the worshippers of a false god. One day, one of the old home builders climbed to the top of the cathedral and burned away the horrible symbol of the crime that had been perpetuated. For a brief moment, the beautiful little house stood once again and sparkled under a bright red moon.

What is a Burner?

Who can this be
this creature called "Burner?"
She's sometimes quite shy
more oft a head-turner.
He's wild and soft,
energetic and lazy,
His piss is quite clear
but his smoke makes him hazy,
Some of him laugh
when the man is burned early,
others stomp feet,
clench fists
and act surly.

What about color,
the literal ask
but no one can see
'neath the burner's dust mask.
is the burner a hippy
the historian queries
but the burner camp houses
both rambos and faeries.
Is the burner a commie,
a queer or a Jew?
It is true she's these things,
and the opposite too!

The burner is happy,
is sad and is manic
calm as the desert,
and open to panic.
Frought with elation
and clever as shit
She can fashion a dragon
out of zip ties and spit.

What is a burner?
The truth's plain to see:
A burner's just lucky,
just lucky to be.

Any other arsonists we should celebrate?

So, while we're at it...are there any other confessed arsonists or vandals that we should rally around?

Also, are there any other hippie sellouts out there that we should target? Any other private property we should destroy in the name of radical self-expression?

I'm looking for ideas here, people. Paul got the ball rolling.

Who's next? What else should we destroy?

hate commercial events but love wild art performances? welcome home.

http://welcomehome.org/

i warmly invite all of you to check out a rainbow gathering at some point in your lives and perhaps share your performance art. you will be amazed at how much of it and what variety you'll see, with wildly creative and awesome handmade stages crafted from nature. kid village, in my opinion, is the best of all the elaborate temporary giant installations. bc it's so fun! this of course requires massive participation and effort from large numbers of people. it is their event. and yours.

i've done scouting for israeli rainbow gatherings for years now. in the u.s. the gathering is always the entire month of july. the site changes from year to year, usually in a forest, you can find out where at welcomehome.org or join a yahoo group for rainbow updates from some hippies near you!

Stolen from another tribe, where they are not very happy with Mr. Addis:

Arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 25 at Pershing County Courthouse in Nevada.

Our contribution to the community was ruined by a wayward soul who last attended in 1998 and returned to disrupt what the community has evolved into.

reposted from: Burning Man partners all suing each other (yelp.com)
http://www.yelp.com/topic/hyaLHkpePIaVum3vKhfGGg

> is it inevitable that humans will turn everything into a struggle for power?

I think we're slowly evolving away from that. painfully slowly.

on the macro scale, the world trend for the last six decades has been gradually away from large-scale war. right now, there are insurrections here and there, people fighting for their rights, but no serious empire builders any more (now that Rumsfeld, Rove, etc are finally being thrown out - and they didn't get very far, even with freakishly favorable conditions).
yes, there are still monolithic powers like China, Russia, and the US, but the trend is toward more cooperative structures, like the EU, ASEAN, OPEC, and MercoSur. The old powers step very lightly around these new groups, who have no single leader.

On the micro scale we have co-ops and worker-owned companies very much on the rise, marriage has become much less exploitive, and many people are gradually demanding more healthy communication in their lives - a huge step in outgrowing competition as prime motivator.

The great local leaders like Gandhi, King, and Mandela are giving way to leaderless, powerful planet-wide movements like Food Not Bombs and Critical Mass. Larry Harvey claims Burning Man is a movement. - but he won't let go the reins. After a decade of ignoring it, John Law has become motivated to say to Harvey, "time to put your money where your mouth is".

"I think increasingly the political parties don't matter. I think leaders will rise up in these (Burning Man) groups and a new kind of value-based politics - drawing renewal from rituals - will emerge. Then you have a rebirth of democracy, but a different kind of democracy."

First of all, without saying whether Burning the Man early was a good idea or not, I agree 150% with his explanation for doing it as was posted in his interview with wired. http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/news/2007/08/addis?currentPage=all Everything he said is totally right on the money, and I admire his perspectives.

As for the act itself, nobody was hurt. How dangerous do you think the act was though? What would have been safer about burning the man on the appropriate date vs early? Is the danger of falling debre greater than the danger of taking drugs in the burning hot desert and potentially getting dehydrated? Statistically, is the fire danger at BM greater than the danger of any other activity involving large numbers of intoxicated people gathered at one place?

Im open to explanations for why it might have put people at risk, but I dont fully understand why burning it early was less safe than burning it later.

An unfortunate occurence, one which may have been inspired by Addis' alleged act, is that someone else's art was burned. The piece itself was a wood carving of the statue of liberty, an icon, and the person burning it probably thought he/ she was protesting something. He/she not only burned the piece, but also burned the trailer it was transported on and some of the man's equipment as well.

http://www.oneflameinthefire.com/timeless-art/

Regardless of my opinion of Addis' "art" (and my opinion is very very mixed on that one), whoever did this is not artist, but a vandal, a thief, and a jackass, one likely inspired by Addis.

On ownership, community and being heard

Asked in other threads: should the LLC be allowed to dictate terms just because they "own" Burning Man?

The short answer is yes, that's the definition of ownership. The volunteering that people do and the expectations they have should be honored if possible, but pretty much they don't have nor should they have to.

Unless you've signed a contract with the LLC, they don't owe you anything. The only contract most of us sign is buying the ticket, which obligates them to permit us to enter the event or to issue a refund.

That said, the spirit and intent of Burning Man is somewhat outside this narrow, corporate reality and they haven't been living up to it, it is true.

BUT....

We do ourselves no service by responding to this disappointing turn with illegal behavior. If you want to be heard, it is best NOT to behave violently so long as there is any alternative.

Speak, gather, protest, stay home, throw your own party, burn Larry in effigy, blog about, sing about it, dance about, create the anti-Burning Man...reclaim the symbol.

But when we endorse stupid, juvenile, narcissistic, unconsensual, violent outbursts like this, we will be shut out...and rightfully so.

The surest sign that Burning Man is in trouble is that shameless opportunists like Addis can make a buck off the community's disappointment.

Don't be fooled.

From today's NYT. it kind of resonates with the spirit of the discussion here.
Burn Down a Poet’s House, and the Mail Just Pours In

By JANET MASLIN
Published: September 10, 2007

The narrator of “An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England” is an accidental firebug “with blood and soot on his hands.” He committed the unspeakable crime of burning down Emily Dickinson’s house. Thus he threw Amherst, Mass., into turmoil, not only because he violated the legacy of the college town’s cherished literary Belle but also because he killed “two of its loafered citizens” in the process.

His name, Sam Pulsifer, is redolent of both pusillanimousness and Lucifer. But the actual Sam is too mousy and naïve for either. He would have fared better in life had he been less dimwitted, “like a child, only bigger” in the opinion of one of his smarter acquaintances. But he wouldn’t have been as wildly, unpredictably funny. And the hilarity of Sam’s narrative voice is fine compensation for its apparent idiocy.

“An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England” is as cheerfully oddball as its title. Its cover art includes a tiny cartoon sketch of a green-frocked literary lioness garlanded in flames, and that captures the irreverence of the author, Brock Clarke’s, enterprise. Although it is his fourth book, it feels like the bright debut of an ingeniously arch humorist, one whose hallmark is a calm approach to insanely improbable behavior.

“I could think of no bigger betrayal than a wife’s changing the locks on her husband,” thinks an aggrieved Sam, “just as long as I didn’t think about my burning and killing and then lying about it.”

Mr. Clarke’s premise gives him an immediate problem to solve. If Sam really torched a treasured landmark and killed people, then served 10 years in prison by the time this story begins, what kind of monster is he? In order to treat this character as a lovable marshmallow, as well as an occasionally inspired literary satirist, Mr. Clarke must figure out how to sustain this novel’s sunny atmosphere without having to justify heinous violence.

So it gradually develops that Sam didn’t exactly mean to incinerate anything or hurt anyone. It happened to him as accidentally as everything else in his life occurs, amid the cloud of bewilderment that follows him everywhere.

Sam never meant to become a serial arsonist. It’s just that the Dickinson fire brought forth a barrage of strange correspondence. Sam predictably prompted the rage of scholars, even if their fury failed to impress him. “There is something underwhelming,” he writes, “ about scholarly hate mail — the sad literary allusions, the refusal to use contractions — so I didn’t pay much attention to those letters at all.” But Sam also got dozens of letters from angry lunatics requesting that he burn down more writers’ homes.

Here too Mr. Clarke must be careful. His book’s craziness must stay jokey. It gets no crazier than the man who wants Ralph Waldo Emerson’s house destroyed to avenge his parents’ naming him Waldo. So Sam has no plans to fulfill his fans’ requests. He prefers a safer course. After prison he went to college to major in packaging science, which comes in handy whenever he wants to use a Ziploc bag or a mayonnaise jar as a metaphor during this narrative.

He met a woman named Anne Marie. He invited her to have dinner. (“ ‘With you?’ she asked.”) Then he married her and took up the life of a suburban father. As the book begins, he lives on Hyannisport Drive in a subdivision called Camelot, a place so quiet on weekdays that “you couldn’t clip your toenails on your front porch without fear of bothering someone with the noise.” Sam accurately surmises that despite Camelot’s proximity to Amherst, the two are worlds apart, and nobody cares about Emily Dickinson in a place like this.

Soon Mr. Clarke has indulged his slightly condescending screwball tendencies to the point where this comic novel is in overdrive. Sam has an angry stalker, the son of the loafered couple who perished in the Dickinson fire. Sam becomes a suspect when other New England writers’ homes begin to burn. And he is dogged by the overweening ambition of his prison buddies, a bunch of bond analysts eager to write best-selling memoirs even though they don’t have anything interesting to remember.

When this leads Sam to open his wide, dewy eyes to the present-day literary world, he finds that the memoir is “like the Soviet Union of literature, having mostly gobbled up the smaller, obsolete states of fiction and poetry.” He finds this truly baffling: “Who knew that there were so many people with so many necessary things to say about themselves?” He wonders how a newspaper reporter from upstate New York can begin a book with the line “I was working as a newspaper reporter in upstate New York.”

Even as Sam begins collecting insights for a book of his own, the “Arsonist’s Guide” of Mr. Clarke’s title, he runs headlong into practitioners of other literary genres. The parodies here are priceless, particularly the grim, depressive, snowbound story of a lonely and miserable man, one that instantly brings to mind Russell Banks’s “Affliction.”

Mr. Clarke sets this part of the book in bleakest New Hampshire, so that Sam can feel sorry for the houses for “having to be compared to the white snow and failing so completely.” This frozen setting also allows him to express a long-smoldering schoolboy hatred of Edith Wharton’s “Ethan Frome.”

Eventually overplotted to the point of overkill, “An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England” (Miriam Levine’s real guidebook has the same title, absent the arson) still manages to remain sharp-edged and unpredictable, punctuated by moments of choice absurdist humor. At the home of Edward Bellamy, the author of “Looking Backward,” Sam notes: “It was very, very pretty. You wouldn’t have noticed anything was wrong with it except that it was ringed by yellow police tape, and there were some faint black singe marks near the foundation.”

This fine fellow has revealed the fraud that is Burning Man, sure they all talk big about freedom and autonomy and radical self expression and hold their trustafarian holiday camp out as an "alternative society". But what happens when their smug little world is threated ... why the call for the police to come and take the bad man away. Idiots.

On Freedom of Speech

It's been suggested that I clarify my position on free speech.

What was done here was a violent suppression of the right of BMO to free speech.

Burning Man has no legal, moral or ethical obligation to express itself in any way other than that which the BMO sees fit. We may not like it, but then we get to vote with our feet and our pocket books.

That is what some of us call "freedom."

The BMO has chosen to throw an annual party in the desert and to build and burn the effigy of a man. Everything else, what that "means" what's "radical" about it or it's "roots" mean nothing at all compared to the right of those involved to conduct themselves, lawfully, as they see fit.

When someone takes it upon himself to violently disrupt their plans, that person is engaging in censorship. They are violating the rights of others.

When that person is held to account in a court of law, that is not only appropriate justice, it also protects the rest of us...OUR free speech.

Freedom of speech is not predicated on artistic purity, anti-corporate sentiment or any other test of the merits of that speech. It is simply protected, and that is just and good.

That's a principle that I hold dear, even in silly, irrelevant circumstances such as these.

What was done here was no great victory for free speech. At best, it was a minor threat to it.

From the Man Himself(tm)

From Paul Addis (complete statement available on Burning Man tribe and, I'm sure, elsewhere):

> We could give a fuck less what you all think of us for doing this.

That says it all. What a refreshing, respectful view of the community. We could give a fuck less what you all think. That's the spirit of Burning Man: fuck you what you think, this is MY ART!!!! MY ART!!! I!!!! ME!!!! MINE!!!! YOUR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS MEANING NOTHING TO ME!!!

>Most of you are newbies who have been drawn in by the semi-religious nature of the event, or maybe just the easy drugs and easier sex.
>You have nothing to offer the event other than your fucking money and obedience. You spend the rest of your lives in mortal fear of
> everything that insurance companies tell you to fear, and pretend that you’re free and clear because you spend four days at a desert
> bacchanal where spinelessness is not only encouraged but genetically replicated for implementation in successive generations. In
>short, you are the swine of which Thompson spoke. Get over yourselves.

So, you don't give a fuck about us. You don't respect our reasons for attending Burning Man. You don't feel any of us have anything to offer...or "most" of us anyway.

You think we spend our lives in mortal fear? Fuck you...I live in freedom of fear. You don't know us. You don't don't know the majority of the 40,000 people who attend this event.

You've decided, all on your own, what other people think and feel and you decided, all on your own, to act violently against something they care about and hold dear and then you have the fucking arrogant presumption to declare that those feelings, which you know because you made them up in your head, are irrelevant to the greatness that is YOU?

Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.

Remind us all again why we should spend money so you can insult and attack us? So you can burn what we build? So you can elevate yourself above a community that you clearly, clearly, hold in the deepest contempt?

If we're psychoanalyzing each other, then it is YOU who live, not in mortal fear, but in mortal shame that you have not achieved what BMorg has.

BMorg gets the attention and money of tens of thousand by providing a community, a place, an event that they enjoy.

YOU can only get their attention by destroying what others have built.

YOU represent everything that Burning Man rightfully abandoned. Narcissism. Disregard for the feelings, rights and hard work of others. Self-aggrandizement on the backs of a community of workers, thinkers, artisans and, yes, tourists who you gladly profit from and the sneeringly dismiss.

It is your failure, your envy, your jealously and your sniveling lack of vision that was on display here. Nothing else.

Get over yourself.

Vengeance of political commentary?

From another thread:

>Was this just vengeance or political commentary?

My guess is neither. What we have here is a man who saw an opportunity to draw attention to himself. With a community-supported legal defense fund, he may do a brief stint and pay a small fine and then he gets to take his act on the road and use this a free advertising for his Gonzo show.

Wouldn't it be ironic if in the name of radical anti-corporate freedom of expression we all rallied behind a cynical self-promoter who used arson to advance his stage career?

Wouldn't it be sad if a shameless mountebank exploited the legitimately broken hearts of burners to aggrandize himself? To inflate his ego?

Wouldn't it be ironic if he rose to prominence on the updraft of the very popularity of Burning Man which he pretends to disdain?

And wouldn't it be sweet justice if the tens of thousands of Burners stood together and said "Yes, change...but not this way?"

Wouldn't THAT be radical?

Action, always. Violence, never.

Paul Addis has done what so many have dreamt of, joked about, threatened, suggested. And Larry wants him jailed for doing basically what Larry got kicked off Baker Beach for doing.

lets get this party started. http://tribes.tribe.net/pauladdisformayor

but first we have to bail him out of jail:
