This letter builds up a premise of the alcohol, drugs etc being wrong and unacceptable but then throws as the last thing read a "We can't do anything about it" statement.
The group apparently already has connections with the police, since I haven't been part of any of the talking or negotiations I am just going to throw this idea out not knowing if it has been approached or not.
Why not use the police contact to see if there are any co-operative efforts we can do with them?
It could be a matter as simple as making some sort of agreement with them that we will request people with alcohol/drugs whatever either toss it or leave, then call the police if they refuse.
Or it could be as strong as requesting extra patrols if the police have the time to come and get strict on those rules to set the standard of alcohol/drug use at the event, so that it may become a known deal that using is unacceptable at this event.
Either way I don't think it could hurt too much to ask the police contact if there is any assistance they can provide in helping cleaning up that aspect of the jam.
Just my two cents.
The premis of alcohol and drugs being "wrong" is not ours. Using drugs and alcohol in the parks is against the law, and the fire/police/parks will shut down the spinjam if it's done in their presence.
We just want to spin and to keep the bridge firejam open. We aren't cops and don't pretend to be cops. So we put up signs, hand out copies of the city's rules, and help to organize a "safe" spinjam. If anyone wants to follow us, fine. If they don't, the police/fire/parks will eventually notice and shut down the jams.
We will occasionally ask spinners to stop until an unsafe condition is corrected. That's it. That's all we do, all we can do, and all we want to do.
Like it or not, there is a strong anarchist feeling among many spinners and drummers, so that any attempt to enforce rules is resisted. We'd like to stay out of that fight.
