Hi Folks,
Re: East Bank Esplanade Festival Areas and Parking lots - Sunday Nights
Fire Performance - Parks Permit
UPDATE:
I have done the following:
1. Confirmed that the Park Manager responsible for the area is Zone Manager, Terri Davis. I briefed her on the situation and she said that Bob Stillson (District Maintenance Supervisor) should be the point of contact for maintenance and park use issues relative to a Parks Permit for fire performance activities.
2. Confirmed that the Portland Parks and Recreation (PP&R) staff you should work with for a parks permit is Cary Coker 503-823-2514 ( who was at our 4-24-08 meeting) and his co-worker in Special Events...Kita Xayachek 503-823-2516
3. Had standard parks signs mounted in the Park plaza areas:
"Alcoholic Beverages Prohibited -- Park Closed at Midnight."
4. Discussed this with PDC and City Center Parking (who Manage the Parking lots) --- they will implement pay for parking 24/7 (eliminate free parking on Sundays) in the parking areas there
5. I will have Park Rangers, the parking lot security provider, help monitor the situation there and stay in touch with Portland Police Bureau.
Please let Cary and/or me know how your efforts to organize fire performers (who want to use the Park(s) are progressing and if you want to get a parks special use permit.
Finally, thank you for working constructively with us and supporting/complying with the temporary suspension of live fire performance in the Park.
Call me any time.
Best, Mark

Re: Update (?)
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 8:14 PMSince I get to the firejams via public transit, the cost of which is partially subsidized by my
employer, I am willing to contribute to people's parking costs. I did not dig seeing
people get ticketed after midnight on Sunday 05/04. Can people park on Salmon, etc, without paying for parking?
Anyway, I will be there next Sunday, being the predictable loser that I am.
Suggestion: Go to Joes and buy leakproof aluminum flasks in which to transport your
beverage. No more trash, and no (hopefully) hassles from Big Brother. Also, people should bring trashbags. If a fellow traveller leaves trash, pick it up.
The Portland Police who roll through the firejam area have been cool to us. They are our friends. If we show respect for our environment, it will boost the approbation from the nervous nellies who would otherwise want to shut us down.

Re: Update (?)
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 1:12 PMI must have seriously missed something, how was it a sudden problem that parking was free on Sunday, like it is throughout the rest of portland?? How does he even think that has anything to do with our fire performance activities? -

Re: Update (?)
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 3:58 PMYou know, this could be a blessing in disguise. Think about this:
2 months of tickets being written so now nobody parks there.
giant empty parking lots...
not on parks property....

Sat, May 10, 2008 - 11:14 PM> Devious. I love it. <
In the 60s some of us put coins in the parking meters and then camped out or took a nap in the area we'd paid for. San Francisco mostly, but downtown L.A. too.
It worked for a minute.

Re: Update (?)
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 10:06 AMI have never parked for free in a parking lot in portland. on the streets yes, but not in a parking lot. they were letting us do so on sundays.
as far as getting a permit, there is no way in hell I would take on that responsibility of getting a permit and being liable when there are too many spinners with egos and carelessness (including "I'll go out when I want with or without permission of the person already out there" and "I'm going to smoke this bowl first then spin... in your area yes", etc). I've talked to other spinners in the area and it really would be best to leave it alone for a bit. Just let it simmer down over the summer. -

Re: Update (?)
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 12:05 PMwe already know that you think everyone sucks. it's getting repetetive and boring.
can we all try to have some sort of productive conversation or stay silent?

Re: Update (?)
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 3:56 PMDuring the dead of winter, a hardy few of us drummers carried on while most spinners
"let it simmer down..." I don't have time to simmer down. The vast majority of people spend
their lives simmering down, and one day they wake up old. Life is here now; it is not in your datebook.
