Disappointed....

so the rumor is true....
That is sad.
Yes I've been there a few times since the changes occured. I agree that it wasn't as comfortable as when I first began going, and when I first began going (back in a day) people knew what the fuck fire safety was, where the wait line was, where the fuel station was and were respectful enough to say "hey can I spin too when you go out?" and stood in line etc.
Even with the new regulations I would see the disrespect of some of the spinners that seem to mistake anarchy for stupidity. Err... stupidity for anarchy... whatever. Either way I saw even "responsible" spinners with a bit of an ego and some rudeness to me... Funny it simmered down usually when they became familiar with me or realized who I was and that I wasn't just some newbie but someone who has been spinning at the jam for a couple years now. (again, back when things were cool and relaxed and even safe).
I know I wasn't able to attend the meetings. I too am extremely busy as a program coordinator who also fills in many shifts in homes I am short on staffing as well am active in 3 groups in town for animal welfare and earth first. Either way I would show up and when my two cents were given they seemed to be generally tossed back. I didn't much appreciate my knowledge being so disregarded and treated like I was trying to get in on the control rather than expressing my discomfort in the situation.
Not this last week but the week before last I was there at the jam and it actually felt ok to me. I thought we were making progress of not taking the place over (which I can see the point of drummers and audience when the fire spinners come through and appear to claim territory and control) so much but being fare to all.
It is sad that our friend Tre Arrow up at the Detention center no longer has something to look forward to at the end of the week as he sits in his cell charged with crimes that are not something he would have done as an earth first activist. I will have to write him and let him know why.
It really is a shame that it came to this thanks to irrisponsible and beligerent humans who think it's appropriate to fuck off any kind of order in the name of anarchy when they have no clue that what they do is just plain stupid and dangerously wreckless. That's not anarchy kids, grow the fuck up. I resent not slamming my fisted can into the face of the guy that told me it wasn't my business and not to fucking worry about it before all of this happened. He deserved it and I would have had no problem explaining that to my boss.
Anyway, so they were planning this anyway, but I do think that if more responsible spinners would have spoken up to those irrisponsible shit heads when the chaos began, saying "dude, don't smoke that bowl while standing in a spill" or "no open flames, including cigarettes near the fuel station" or "You've been drinking and your last set worried me, how bout sit the rest of the night out", you know, things that USED to be said, then things would have continued, accidents would not have happened like they did, fire department and parks and rec may have given us the space. But no... it was left to a tiny handfull of us, including myself, to step up (alone even) to them until it got so bad everyone took control... and now it's gone.
It's real sad.

Oh, gods, FINALLY! Someone else has stepped up and voiced similar irritations and concerns.

    Thank you.

Having spent most of my secondary school years as a journalist, I understand how important free expression and speech are. My husband proudly sports an anarchy symbol upon his flesh. Even _he_ understands how bad things were getting at SpinJam. Even _he_ was passionate about bringing some sembelence of order to the whole thing.

Laws and ordinances and rules such as the ones we've come up against are put in place -- not to stifle our creativity and oppress us -- but to protect life, limb and property.

As long as these guidelines (many of which have been created, outlined and put into place by fellow burners) are followed, we are granted the _privilege_ of burning. Despite our Constitutional rights of freedom of expression and speech, burning is a _PRIVILEGE_.

It is potentially dangerous, potentially damaging. As long as we acted responsibly, maturely, the privilege was ours. And, someday, the hope of it becoming a right. We have still been offered this chance. These offices are willing to work with us, to listen to and to hear us out... to give us alternatives, to give us hope. They _Are_ taking us seriously, people. They've seen this is something beautiful, and that we love and cherish it. Let's not forget that.

But, as long as anarchy-minded people continue to act as though we're being oppressed... our efforts will be in vain.

Please, PLEASE, keep these things in mind, whenever you plan to light up. One person's actions can deeply affect us all.

I love you all. You're wonderful, open, passionate and beautiful people. I've felt such a sense of belonging, here. This isn't an attack on any one person or group.

I know, perhaps the thoughts I've herein expressed will make me unpopular.

    So be it.

Freedom of speech, and I felt it needed to be said...

those dumb asses down at the spin jam causing nothing but chaos aren't anarchy minded... they are just stupid little punks (for the most part) who are on a wagon they label anarchy. They think being unsafe and carrying a fuck you attitude in the face of everything means anarchy... they need to stop acting like 12 year olds and read a book and take lessons on learning something right.

      Freedom of expression, indeed.

Oregon's Constitution has stronger protection of that freedom than the US Constitution, and probably stronger than anywhere else in the world. Welcome to Oregon!

And that's the basis on which we will eventually end up with one or more Burn Parks in Portland, and perhaps elsewhere in the state. We got Skate Parks. We even semi-approve of Zoo Bombers. We can have Burn Parks.

The problem with anarchy (or Anarchy) is that it requires an incredible amount of organization and self-discipline for it to work. You don't just vote, you continually interact. I'm pretty sure that most of the people who jumped in to pull the jam back from total renegade selfishness consider themselves A-oriented, if not A-committed.

Ever notice how Portlanders will correct you, not just about how to pronounce Willamette, but how to sort your garbage, which plants in your yard are invasive, how to deal with hayfever, a better way to distribute the rainwater from your roof to your yard, etfuckincetera. We also stop in the middle of the street to let strangers pull out of a driveway. And much as that last thing drives me nuts, these are all traits and behaviors of true anarchists.

Politness and consideration, a real regard for others' rights, and a gut-level understanding of not just the Golden Rule but the Categorical Imperative. All essential for anarchy to thrive.

There's a reason why we're called "Little Beruit." There's a reason why we put a larger proportion of citizens on the street trying to stop the war than any other city in the US. And there's a reason people who move here from L.A. and Phoenix will more often than not eventually adopt the same attitudes.

Must be the water. Or the fire.

The firejams will return. There's too much existing law that supports this kind of social expression and this kind of spontaneous community. There's over 2,000 members of the Trive fire community in Portland alone. Yes, it will happen sooner if we tidy things up and get back to always having spotters and damp towels and Duvetyne and ten feet of separation from the audience and no smoking in spin-off areas and fuel depots. But it will happen.

From Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, I think. (It's been a long time.)

The Golden Rule is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," but Kant reshapes it to make a universal rule. (See Wikipedia.)

Kant sez "Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law." That is, behave only as you would have everyone behave, and do nothing else.

This is an impossible standard to live by, but it's not a bad ideal to keep in mind.
