Hi peacelovers,

As a new member, I'm writing to introduce myself & share a little bit about my beliefs. I believe it's one of the top priorities of humanity to attain a shift in global consciousness such that war, along with starvation, torture, genocide, and the like, becomes obsolete. I don't know that war will ever be eliminated altogether, but striving toward that goal would be a worthy project of an enlightened humanity.

This belief depends on the idea that humanity can become enlightened, and I think we have to embrace that idea because the alternative is the utter destruction of the human-supportive biosphere. Earth would survive her rejection of us, but she would be seriously damaged and would take some eons to recover and flourish again (albeit without homo sapiens). So we've got to learn peace, but I think it will come about (if it does) as a benefit of global enlightenment rather than as a goal in itself.

I am a convinced Quaker, and I feel much resonance with Buddhist philosophy and practice, both largely because of the prominence of non-violence in these ways of thinking and acting. I was also much influenced by Gandhi's "experiments with truth" (a nice description of his life's work as well as the title of his autobiography). So... thank you for welcoming me to your community, and I look forward to joining in the conversation.

Best wishes,
daDA
