At Pennsic each year we let loose a pressious Unicorn and the children must seek and find it.... No not really the Unicorn hunt is a tour of Pennsic. We use it to show where important places are like security, lost and found, first aid.... Our camp in relation to the rest of the world. We also take them around to visit "safe places" like camps where they now they can get help if they need it while they are out and "friendly faces" who are particular people who can reder assistance if needed. My son won't be wondering around Pennsic alone for a number of years but it is never to early to be oriented. We will be havign older children in camp this year who may wish to go off on their own and it is a good thing to give them a foundation of safety and security so that they can spread their wings wth less worry.
I am asking for who and where we should visit. Are you a "friendly Face"? Is your camp a "safe place"? Do you have people or children in your camp that would like to tour arond with us? This is also a good idea for Newbies (even full grown ones). I am also asking for volunteers to come onthe tour and act as shepherds with me.
Last year we intended to play the Unicorn hunt and have an actual Unicorn Toy of some sort but that never materialized. If you are the creative type that can make this happen let me know and we can do it but mostly the tour just travels around and we always just miss the Unicorn as in "I thik it went that way".
I also do not have a date and time set for this. I am thinking early second week like when all of our children arrive.

Fri, July 6, 2007 - 8:43 AMYou know the Court of Miracles is always a safe stop - if a little out of the way from everything else but the swamp itself :P

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Fri, July 6, 2007 - 9:59 AMYou know that MdF and Oriflamme are safe camp(s). We should be in the same place but we won't have the gate this year.

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Sun, July 8, 2007 - 5:43 PMHello,
I was just reading this after responding to your question about including Circus of the Damned in your Unicorn Hunt.
If you would like, I would be willing to make up 20-30 wooden plaques with a unicorn symbol on them for "friendly" camps to hang on their gate. That way, a lost (and probably extremely frightened) child wouldn't have to try and remember camp names or exactly where they were. They'd just need to look for a Unicorn on the gate and know that they could go in and ask for help.
I can offer the same sort of thing for "friendly faces", in the form of 2.5" round buttons with a Unicorn on them. Something simple for a child to recognize if they need help.
Circus of the Damned isn't a "family" camp, but we're still children at heart. We like to help make Pennsic fun for the little ones. Doing this, we could help make it safer for them, too.
If you'd think this is a good idea, just drop me a note and I'll get it done. We can meet up at Pennsic or I can mail everything to you.

Will this do for the object of your hunt?
Or would you prefer one that it four feet tall? (Although I don't like the horn on that one as much)
You'd be in charge of storing it from year to year, so it's your call.

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Sun, July 8, 2007 - 6:15 PMThat's nice but I already have one and we will use ours. I had also considered using a unicorn pinata that I saw at my local party store. Do you think it would scar the children too much to find the Unicorn and then smash it to bits for candy? -
-
Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Mon, July 9, 2007 - 10:05 AMNah, I think the pinata is a great idea for the unicorn! You can lead them on by telling them it's a very special unicorn with a very special surprise. ;o)

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 1:22 PMHad a thought o nthis, besides teaching the kids where to find a safe camp/camper - one might want to teach the kids the name of their parents and camp. While it's a great idea to let the kids know where to go, it'll be a great help to have the little kids know who or where their from :) -

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 5:44 AMIt is true. Chilren aught to know htier parents' names and the name of their camp. But the wrinkle is that mom and dad are using pretend names for two weeks. Not many people in my camp know both my mundane name and my pennsic name. My son only knows my real name. But it is true, your children should know something more than Mommy and Daddy.
The other thing I have long considered is how to write important information on thier site tokens without giving up too much information. I tried one year to write camp name and block number and stuff directly on my son with permanant marker. That only worked for a few days before the permanent marker washed away.
This year i was going to buy a battery powered engraving pen. The plan was that I could engrave this information on the child's site token. But then i found out that the engraving pen i was looking at would not have made an impression on sand let alone tin.
My next option is a tattoo but I don't think I am allowed to tattoo my son.
I this is the last year that Drew will get a wrist band instead of a site token. I can give him as much information as I can but when he is lost and confused I am certain he won't remember any of it,,, We do the best we can. -

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 8:09 AMTwo years ago a certain baroness wrote on her baby with Sharpie. She had to re-do it only once. It said MY mommy is Baroness So & so and if she is lost without me I should be returned to either "this camp" or "That camp" (safe camp which was ours) and told that my mommy is lost.
Our girls know both our mundane and SCA names as well as the camp name.
Good idea though, to start working on getting them to remember that info again though.
They REFUSED to wear the wrist bands and absolutely begged for the tokens which we received in the mail at home after Pennsic. Go figure!
-
Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 8:24 AMMy son is 4. His band goes around his ankle, and we write our camp name and block number on it. He also knows the name of our camp and its device (kinda hard to miss the Darkyard tree.) We had some temporary tattoos made up a few years ago of the Darkyard tree. I bought a bunch, and he wears one on his arm... it surprisingly lasts the whole two weeks!
With that tattoo, people always know he's a Darkyarder. -
-
Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 8:38 AMBoth girls slipped them off their ankles within an hour of Troll. We carreid them in our pouches the rest of the time when we left camp with them. -

Fri, July 13, 2007 - 8:38 AMThey were 2 & 4 last year too..... -

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 5:39 PMMy daughter is now almost old enough to wander on her own. She is 11, Pennsic rules says she can go without adult supervision at 12. But we still drill her about our names and our campsite. When we walk back from camp I have her lead the way, things like that. So she gets a feel for Pennsic. Luckily when she was 5 (her first Pennsic) she stayed close to "home". Our biggest problem was her running in camp. A lot of our camp mates were not kid friendly and just couldn't handle a 5 year old running around be a 5 year old.
Never had to do this myself, but an idea I'v heard is to make a favor with Parents SCA Name, Camp, etc whatever information you feel comfortable. Pin it to the back of the shirt (so they can't take off) something like that. You could take a piece of cloth write the information with a sharpie or a fabric pen and double up the fabric (like a book) so the information is on the inside and not visible to the world. But if the child was lost hopefully a kind soul (like another parent) would notice the favor and see the information. Or the child would have enough sense to say look at my back. Hopefully you get the idea.

Sat, July 14, 2007 - 5:52 AMCLaudia, Valentine and Cassair,
Can I count on your camps being "Safe Camps"? You get a Unicorn Plaque to hang on your gate and your camp gets a stop in the Unicorn Hunt on first Monday. Do any of you want to be included on the Unicorn Hunt tour? We can come by your camp and pick you up on our way by. -
-
Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Sun, July 15, 2007 - 7:06 AMYes, ours can be a "safe camp" on your list. The Barony of Roaring Wastes camp is right on the end of N18 at the end of the merchant area. Our camp is easy to spot because we have the Roman pillars for a gate. There is also a very tall flag that flies overhead with a Darkyard tree on it... and it can be seen from quite a distance. Camp is also well-lit at night. With about 130 members, our camp is almost never empty!
Not sure if we will be available to take part in the tour, but if we are, we'll join you as you stop by! -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Mon, July 16, 2007 - 9:15 AMThank You!
Our secret is a fee for leaving your stuff out overnight. The ladies who get up early collect all the "stuff" left out and it goes into the red bucket. You have to pay a dollar to get your item back! (Which goes into the general camp fund to pay for things like propane for the torches.)
We also try to keep all the camp chairs out of the main common area. We have benches and stuff instead. -

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Mon, July 16, 2007 - 2:39 PMIf we got the same spot we normally have we should be a few camps down from Darkyard (closer to North Gate) in Lochmere. White fence, with blue crabs and huge white pavillion as a gate. And the blue and white banners witht he blue crab.
I just sent a post to the baronial list asking if we could be a friendly camp. I don't want to speak for the camp. But you can count on me and my husband to be friendly faces for sure. My Baron and Baroness are very kid friendly so unless others object I think it will be okay.

We'll be in B02 same place as last year. Head down Bannockburn - we are in between Aerie Tir Thalor (black sheet walls) and Oriflamme (red sheet walls). We should have yellow and white sheet walls. Probably the first or the last stop on the tour!

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Fri, July 20, 2007 - 9:20 PMYou have me listed twice. Old camp and new camp.
Sorry about the confusion. Gypsies are, by nature, confusing.
The safe camp is Circus of the Damned. We are on w-10.
I still need to know where and when to drop the Unicorn plaques and buttons off to you. I painted 20 plaques and made 100 buttons.
(I'll bring a disk with the artwork file, my button-maker, and extra button-parts to War, in case you need more.)
Let me know.

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Sat, July 21, 2007 - 9:44 PMI will be bringing around the Unicorn Plaques to participating camps during the first week (probably Wed. or Thrust). I will only have 20 Unicorns this year. On our First year I am being conservative, there is always room to expand, I think.... I will have 200 Unicorn Buttons for "Friendly Faces" I will try to find all of you, however, if I do not find you by Saturday of the Middle Weekend, please seek me out and get one. The unicorn Hunt will be War Week Monday around 3 in the afternoon. The time is all dependant on when the final members of my camp arrive. IF you want to come on the tour, and want to see all of it, gather at The Hundred Acre Woods around 3 that day. Other wise you can join us as we pass. -

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Mon, August 13, 2007 - 6:10 AMThe Unicorn Hunt was at 3pm on MOnday War Week. I took a group of five children on a long romp all over Pennsci searching for a Unicorn. Of course we just just missed the creature at several camps. Each of these camps had been imbued with the Unicorn's protective powers. Some camps had gifts for the children others had water or juice or tootsie rolls. Not many of the children survived to the end of the hunt. It was hot and a very long walk and they one by one dropped off to their own camps, secure in the knowledge that they had at least three camps they knew for protection should they need it.
Back at The Hundred Acre Woods, those who made it back, discovered that the Unicorn had stumbled into our camp and gotten mired in the mud. We captured the Unicorn and said the magic word to have it give over its magical treats and gifts. (it was pinata and the children gleefully demolished it for the candy, I saved the head)
I would like to hear what other people's experience with the Noble Order of the Unicorn. What are your thoughts on the article in the Independant and the disclaimer from the mayor or Pennsic. Did any parents visit the Unicorn camps on their own? Did any children utilize teh Unicorn Camps for help? I would like to know what happened so we can determine if any changes need to be made. -

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Mon, August 13, 2007 - 7:06 AMErrissa,
I was out of camp when you came thru Isenfoust. Both times actually but we were sure to put up the sign. We really didn't have too much need of it other than your group. I was aware that there was "an official disclaimer" but I did not get a chance to read it myself. I wasn't surprised by it with the scuttlebut going on within the SCA about childrens activities and the ongoing lawsuits about it especially in PA.
I'd say continue but it really is up to you (or someone) to roganize it. To really be "official" you'd want to do it thru the SCA and the Pennsic staff but again that is up to you. -

Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Tue, August 14, 2007 - 5:38 AMOn first Saturday an article was printed in the PI describing the Noble Order of the Unicorn and the system of safe camps that had been established and the Unicorn Hunt tour of said camps. On Saturday afternoon I was taking a nap and heard a golf cart roll into my camp. When I popped out of the tent, I found that I was being summonsed by the Pennsic Mayor Larry the Lawyer. The first thing he said to me was "Don't worry, you are not in trouble." Well he explained to me that the SCA and the Coopers would have to disclaim any involvement or support of the Unicorn Project because I hadn't taken the procedural steps to make it official and make everyone fill out a back ground check and certain waivers and other such C.Y.A. requirements for legal. I think he expected me to cry or to protest. I explained that I totally understood and that he and the SCA and the coopers must cover their respective asses as needed but I was not going to dismiss nor cease my activities. I felt that I had made it clear in the article that this was organized by individual persons with good intensions and in no way official and had encouraged parents to seek out Unicorn Camps with their children and be certain for themselves if this was a system they wanted to be involved with... Well Mayor Lawyer Larry needed to be certain that the disclaimer was official and clear. Therefore, while the article itself only ran once, the disclaimer appeared in the paper every issue.
To make the Unicorn project official would make all participants and all members of participating camps volunteers. And in the SCA now volunteers working with children have to have back ground checks. I don’t really want to put everyone through that. Some people already have their back ground checks or accreditations. I generally picked participants this year from people I trusted.
I didn’t have any lost children come to my camp for help but then that is a good thing.
I think the project was a success because it was noticed. -
-
Re: The annual Unicorn Hunt
Tue, August 14, 2007 - 7:06 AMThanks for the background on what happened and why. Like I said it make sense. As far as I know currently the SCA has NOT made the background checks official as they are still trying to work out the legalese and the provider. MAYBE by next Pennsic 37 it could be an official thing though? My lady & or I (or both) will likely be SCA "approved" since we are likely candidates to hold the children officer positions (Minister of Youth) in our local shire. It would not be too tough (I think?) to find camps with other "approved" SCAdians. Now to get that past Cooper's and Pennsic staff is another issue. PA laws would prevail in ANY case. That is why some of the rules at Pennsic are more stringent than normal SCA rules. For instance we can bring my cousin to any of our local SCA events to help watch our girls BUT because of PA law we cannot bring her to Pennsic since she is NOT our child. That is NOt a Cooper's thing or a Pennsic thing but PA law. Simple right? Nothing dealing with the law is simple.
