Re: I need advice on Pennsic
Thu, June 14, 2007 - 6:18 PMCome visit us at the Hundred Acre Woods.
Have a big bucket or wading pool for fun cool and clean time.
Who will you be camped with?
My son was 4 months old for his first Pennsic (he is 4 years old now) and we had a pack and play, a Moses basket, a carry sling and a pop up shade tent for the little one. The pop-up had a blanket on the floor and fun things for him to play with ont he floor for belly time and a mobile out of reach hanging from the top for back time. Six months old is sitting up already right? so be prepared for that.
Baby wipes and sanitary lotion are a must.
Sunscreen and bug spray that are safe for your child are very important.
I suggest you buy a whole bunch of inexpensive ear plugs and offer them around to your camp mates and your neighbors, so they can't say they were not warned.
Know that you will be secure with the conditions of Pennsic. Don't sweat the small stuff: bug bites are not so bad most of the time, sunburn is not great, the first aid tent will not know what do with a baby so have all you own medical stuff.
You don't know yet if your child is allergic to things like bee stings so ask your doctor for a prescription for an Epi Jr. just in case.
Come visit us at the Hundred Acre Wood any time. We are a camp of parents and children and we are happy to host a parent and child, especially babies. We will be int he B=blocks somewhere, not sure exactly where yet. But we will post that soon as we know. There is a Hundred Acre Woods Tribe all about us.

Re: I need advice on Pennsic
Fri, June 15, 2007 - 5:22 AMErissa rocks! She has great advice.
We brought our daughter when she was 3 mo. old. Something we brought that I thought was a life saver was a small, portable swing. My daughter loved it and she could stay there for quite a while, including for her nap.

Re: I need advice on Pennsic
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 5:48 PMMy son was 3.5 months old his first Pennsic. He absolutely loved his bouncy chair, and spent much of his "free time" seated there, watching the various goings-on around camp. We kept a small spray bottle with water in it for misting him if he got too hot. Take some Pedialyte along... the clear flavorless kind seems to go down well... and offer a small bottle a couple times a day. Even though my son drank his normal amout during Pennsic, he was more than willing to pound down that Pedialyte as well.
If you are formula feeding, I had a great system worked out for warming, cleaning, and storing bottles/formula... let me know if you want/need more info.
We used a sling carrier to get around, but brought the stroller for those afternoons of walking around in circles in camp to get him to fall asleep at nap time.
Bring both very warm and very cool clothing. I swear he was in onesies by day and fleece footie pajamas at night. -

Re: I need advice on Pennsic
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 6:47 PMNow my son is breast feeding will that effect the Pedialite? Or is it more to keep his electrolites in balance? I plan on bring a large amount of various types of clothing for him. Thank you for the advice everyone. Did anyone ever just take an afternoon and go to town and sit in the air conditioning with their little one as a break away? -

Re: I need advice on Pennsic
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 7:26 PMWell honey, you know I had Benjamin last year at 9 months. My ped recommended nothing but breastmilk for him. Wyatt will nurse when he wants something to drink. Introducing other liquids is not always a good idea. Definitely talk to the doctor about what he/she recommends.
As to what to do, bring him to Auntie Zsof so she can spoil him! *grin* I definitely think Erissa gave great advice though.
I think the biggest advice I can give you is this: be prepared to go home if it's not working out. Pennsics come and go, but both of your happiness is more important. Rowan had reflux when she was 4 months old and I was too stupid stubborn to leave with her so we had a yukky Pennsic when we should have just gone home.
I will do everything I can to help you out this year. Do you have a sling?? I'm making one for Noelle, I can easily make you one too (do you remember the one I had Ben in last year?) PM me if you need to talk!

Re: I need advice on Pennsic
Sat, June 23, 2007 - 5:34 AMYes! That first year it was so hot , so I scooped up the baby and my husband and a couple of camp mates and we went to PIttsburgh, went to the Art Museum and got some lunch. We came back to Pennsic via Lake Moraine and all got showers. During the first week The Hundred Acre Woods will be taking a feild trip or two to Lake Moraine just to give the kids a chance to recoup from the travelinga dn unpacking and all that. I bring a mundane flowty just to take to the lake for Drew. And if you are camping with the Tuchux, you will find that many of them live "near by" so don't worry - there will be places to go to escape the heat if it is too much.
Also remember that you will need at least twice the amount of diapers that youa re used to useing. Fresh air and all makes baby poop twice as often.

Sun, June 24, 2007 - 8:52 AMYep, if you're breastfeeding he won't need any other liquids. YOU might though. ;o)

Re: I need advice on Pennsic
Mon, June 25, 2007 - 8:18 AMMy daughter didn't go to Pennsic until she was almost 2, but we did take her camping when she was an infant. I would suggest bringing some familiar blankies, stuffed animals and toys (preferably the quiet kind for the sanity of the neighbors!) so that things aren't totally scary for the kid. Also, if you will be having different sleeping arrangements (like sleeping-in rather than a crib or vice versa) maybe try it out at home so he will get used to it in a familiar setting and so it won't be completely new.
All the other advice is great... that is just my $0.02. OH- and the hardest thing of all.... don't worry! Kids are durable and won't come to harm if you take precautions (like sanitation). So just relax and enjoy this unique opportunity. Come to visit in the B-blocks too! We aren't with Hundred Acre Wood but there are several camps with kids up there with ages ranging from teens to babies. -

Mon, June 25, 2007 - 10:03 AMYep, my favorite bit of advice I got from a Pennsic mom:
Kids are washable. -

Mon, June 25, 2007 - 12:12 PMand durable. I am always amazed at Drew's ability to bounce back and adapt. -

Re: I need advice on Pennsic
Tue, June 26, 2007 - 7:44 AMAlso bring toys that won't make them heart broken if they "go away". Our oldest has never "latched" onto a toy or stuffie that she couldn't do without. Our youngest has her PFB that we will never be able to get rid of. As a matter of fact our oldest last year had brought a stuffy to sleep with and after playing with a campmates friends daughter for a few days as they left she gifted it to her. Everyone was so touched by her generosity but I wasn't surprised. She has also given a few bags of "extra" to the local hospital's maternity ward when we moved.
She is really looking forward to seeing that little girl (from Clan Campbell) this year too as well as visitng THAW and MdF too! -

Re: I need advice on Pennsic
Tue, June 26, 2007 - 8:09 AMDrew had a favorite stuffie that got ruined at Pennsic last year. Soggy, mussy and just plain gross... It had to "go away" and I knew he wouldn't let it just happen so I had to be devious and hide it deep in a rubbish bin. It wasn't tilla fter we got home that he realized it was missing. I thought he was going to run all the way back to Pennsic from Baltimore in order to find it. hE was heartbroken for days. I won't make that mistake again. All of the really loved and valuable toys stay home to watch the cat this year.
