Tue, February 19, 2008 - 4:06 AMALL HAIL GAFFA TAPE !
(we put a car door back on with it once :)

Re: Gaffa Tape / Duct Tape
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 5:30 AMUmmm, I think the black, rubbery stuff you're describing is actually electrical tape. Duct tape is usually silver with threads running through it. Sorry, I can't help being a perfectionist. :-)
-
-
Re: Gaffa Tape / Duct Tape
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 6:31 AMaustralia - gaffa tape is black (which is what you guys call electrical tape)
then we have masking tape, which is clear or brown
then yeah, i guess duct tape is prob that silvery stuff here too.
well, we're here to celebrate the magical powers of TAPE ... be they silver, brown, black, or even snoopy bandaids if they've come in handy over the years!
don't worry, i too am a perfectionist ... i shall never get duct tape mixed up again!

Re: Gaffa Tape / Duct Tape
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 10:04 AMSo, now I'm wondering, is "gaffa" related to "gaffer?" And what exactly is a gaffer anyway? You always see that in the movie credits, but I never knew. Or a grip? What does he do, hold stuff really securely? -
-
Re: Gaffa Tape / Duct Tape

!!!!!!!!!!! LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!
i just scared the dog by laughing so loudly .. mind, it is 5am here and tho i cant sleep, he can!
maybe a gaffer is someone who puts gaffa tape on stuff to fix it, and yes, gaffas himself to the ... erm fluffy microphoney things, so they dont shake ...
and a grip? well ... he just grips stuff. like audiences maybe?
thrillers? docos?
they can be gripping ... is he responsible for that too?
i vote u wiki it, miss perfectionista!!!
im having another timtam to induce sleep cos in a chemical world they're very very very cheap ... and chocolately (sorry, blur in my head, the band and the concept) ...

Re: Gaffa Tape / Duct Tape
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 10:37 PM<< australia - gaffa tape is black (which is what you guys call electrical tape) >>
I think gaffa tap and eleci tape are different..
Gaffa is a much heavy and wider tape - about the width of my three fingers.... It often has a cotton weave through it - but not always..
Electrical tape (come in black, yellow, red, white) is about the same width as the width of your thumb - try to pull it and it stretches..
Then there is Legal Tape - about double the width of eleci tape - with a cotton weave - it is very strong - but once you put a small tear in it - it rips very easily indeed..
Eury - maybe they call it something different is Melbourne than they do in Adelaide. ? -
-
Re: Gaffa Tape / Duct Tape
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 4:31 AMThe cotton weave makes me think it might be more like our silver duct tape. That makes it super strong. Of course, the bad thing is that it usually leaves a sticky residue, so not good for temporary things. Electric tape isn't quite as strong, or as sticky. Now, what we call masking tape is more like paper, rips easily, good for packages. It's also pretty similar to painter's tape, which is just less sticky, to tape a wall so you don't get the wrong color paint over the edge.
I have fixed hems on clothing with plain, old Scotch tape. I don't know what else to call it. The brand has been stuck in my brain too long.
Bubble gum is actually good for hanging posters on the walls, as I was known to do in high school. (Funny side story, I met Eddie Van Halen at a hotel in NYC. He was joking and having fun. I didn't know who he was at first, so I asked. When he told me, I said, "But you don't look anything like the poster I had hanging in my bedroom when I was 16!" He did seem amused and we joked during the whole elevator ride.)
Of course, now that I'm a nursing student, I'm learning about all the wonderful uses of gauze tape and bandage tape and all the other cool forms of tape in that world! -

Wasn't that how this whole conversation got started in the first place? The joy of tape and how we can fix anything with it!
And for the comment about intellectual discussion.... I'm really enjoying this. It might not be a classic academic topic, but it's certainly interesting and I believe all of our comments would qualify as intellectual. I just love the opportunity to really get into a subject, any subject, and pick it apart and hear everyone's opinions and see what we can all learn from it. I think that's really the reason I enjoy being on tribe so much in general.

Re: Gaffa Tape / Duct Tape
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 9:37 AMThanks. Actually the funniest part of the story was when he got into the elevator and said, "Good morning, Heather, how are you?" It took me a moment to realize I was wearing a stupid name badge for the conference I was attending. After a few more minutes of pondering who is the man carrying the guitar, I finally had to ask him.
Yes, and smoking is the greatest way to meet people. Especially now that we're pretty much outcast. I meet all the coolest people after trudging to whatever hideaway the powers that be have devised for us to hide from sight. I met a old business guy at an airport. We were huddled in the cold outside smoking and he told me a joke... "It's a good thing all those homosexuals are coming out of the closet. It makes room for all us smokers." Heehee. I hope no one is offended. It is not intended to be offensive to homosexuals or smokers or anyone else who does not choose to judge the rest of the world. It's really just a comment on how society wants to hide from sight any actions of which is disapproves. Argh. Like remember when they used to have special places for "wayward" girls who got pregnant and disappeared for a few months "to visit an aunt in Idaho" or something.
Hey, maybe we could wrap ourselves in gaffer tape and then no one could see us being naughty!

Re: Gaffa Tape / Duct Tape
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 1:54 PMA "Gaffer" is the head electrician. A "Grip" is the guy in charge of the stage hands, or set-up crew.

Re: Gaffa Tape / Duct Tape
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 3:24 PMIn the video business I am in we also use a black tape that is very similar to duct tape but is higher quality. We use it to put marks on the floor to indicate where someone is to stand for the video shoot. And to hold down cables running to the video cameras. It peels off the floor easily, leaving no gummy tape residue behind the way duct tape can.
We use duct tape and the black more expensive version to temporarily fix all kinds of things in the video business and in the rest of our lives. It is very handy stuff. -

Tue, February 19, 2008 - 4:17 PM< In the video business I am in we also use a black tape that is very similar to duct tape but is higher quality. >
Christie, I know that as "Electrician's tape". -
-
Re: Gaffa Tape / Duct Tape
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 5:06 PMOh, I wondered what it was called. Electrician's tape. Wide like duct, aka duck, tape. Then there's the electrical tape which is narrow and used to wrap live electrical wires.
Yes electrician's tape is very useful. And the main use for it in video is to tape down wires and cables that are often laid down across wide floors so people moving about don't trip on them.
But we use it for far more fix it up type things. I've used it and the silver duck tape to patch together car interiors, book bindings, clothes and other things that are falling apart but still useful with a few patches.
Bubble gum, though, not nearly as practical. -

Funny, I've always called that gaffer's tape, or gaff tape...
I think my fave is the glow tape, so you can spot your mark in the dark during set/scene changes. -
-
Re: Gaffa Tape / Duct Tape
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 8:31 AMThe gunky stuff is called "electrical tape" (but it is *not* to code, nor is it safe), the wide black tape is called "gaffing" tape because you useit to gaffe - that is, you use it to tape cables down to the floor. It's black for camouflage reasons. There are "specialty" versions of gaffing tape in a range of exciting colors.
Interestingly (?), duct tape is *also* not even close to code for duct work. -

Re: Gaffa Tape / Duct Tape
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 11:06 AMI was about to reply when my ride showed up. Right now, I'm pretending that this post is some kind of important thing that I'm taking care of, some amazing thing I've been doing in bed so that people will say, "my god; he worked as soon as he woke up; the guy is a force of nature" and stuff. Ha ha! The look of purse-lipp'd brow-slightly-furrowed seriousness I'm wearing right now at this exact moment is particularly hilarious.
Now I'm nodding a little bit, satisfied; yes: now, NOW I'm done. With what I was doing, the important thing.
Rock. Off to hobble into a car and droolingly gaze out the window at the bright, bright sun.

Gaffa????
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 4:47 PMIt's called "gaffer's tape." Gaffers of stage, screen & TV production, and lots of plain ol' folk who live in Los Angeles, use it a lot.
Sticks well, then comes off well, sans the tape residue.

I also was booted from that tribe. I was probably even the first to get kicked out. It is an honor to get kicked out of that tribe of supposed intelligence, imho.
I like you even better than I did already now. That tribe is no fun. It is for intellectuals. Speaking creatively will get a member booted.
Intellectuals do not have much depth. Their learning is from books and universities. Best thing any of us can do is not be drawn in to that mean group of intellectuals in the first place. (It's a new tribe called 'say something intelligent or leave'.
