I think we already discussed this one...........but it's been awhile...........and in light of the thread regarding "sleepy tribes" - it got me to thinking about being a moderator of a tribe that is sleepy or dead. It's happened to me. I don't worry about it too much. I figure that people have moved on to other tribes which is perfectly fine. I only keep up with a few tribes right now...........the busier ones are a little much for me right now........I stick to the ones that are little more "manageable". If you know what I mean.

I don't take it personally. Kind of like life. It's just one of those things. What about the rest of you? Are you inclined to hand off moderatorship if things die down? Or do you just wait and see what happens? Do you post a bunch of new topics and see how people respond? Do you reach out to your tribe friends with pm's like: "help me out in this tribe. It's dying."?

Interesting subject Heather. I'd think it depends partly on the kind of tribe it is. If it is a tribe with a very specific focus, rather than an open topic tribe things are a little different. I started a tribe about flying trapeze, for instance. It has never been that active, really. I do try now and then to start new topics there to hopefully get things going, and sometimes it works for a bit, then everything slows down again. I have never PM'd members for assistance in getting the action going again in Flying Trapeze or in the other tribe I've been moderating for a while, Vegetarians!.

Vegetarians can get pretty active at times, but then goes long periods with very little action. I pretty much let it unfold naturally. I find the subject matter pretty interesting, and tend to post in any thread someone starts, occasionally starting one of my own, but only if it's something I'd post in the tribe anyway, even if I wasn't moderator. Again, I've never PM'd anyone there asking for help in getting the tribe to be more active.

I've just recently been appointed moderator of a third tribe, it is about a TV show, so every time the show airs it gets it's own natural burst of activity. In between seasons the tribe rests, and very little goes on. I'll probably let the tribe continue to unfold just as it was before I was chosen to be it's latest moderator. But maybe I'll come up with a bright idea to keep things going in that tribe when the show is between seasons.

I've never been moderator of a tribe that has a more open subject matter. I was guest moderator of one tribe for a week, or I was supposed to be, but the appoint a moderator function didn't work for some reason, so I was never actually in the mod spot. But I still acted as a moderator, a sort of leader for the tribe until our mod got back from vacation, and kept people informed as to what I was trying to do to fix the situation. In a tribe like that, I would come up with new topics, I think, if the action became slow. In an open topic tribe there are endless things to talk about.

Still, if others don't post, I'd let it slow down. I wouldn't want it to be endless posts just from me. As far as handing the modship to another because the tribe is slow? I wouldn't do that unless I think I'm not the right mod for the tribe and maybe that's why it's slow. I'd readily pass the modship over to another on the other hand if I lost interest in regular tribing, or if an earlier moderator of the tribe asked for the position back.

All great points and so true..................there must be some scientific explanation for the vegetarians..........perhaps when pineapples and strawberries are in their peak season. I dunno.

I moderate 7 tribes at the moment.. Only two are public. one of which is quiet.. almost silent..

I would not give up a moderatorship simply because the tribe was "unsuccessful" meaning there were few posts - doing so seems "wrong" on some level.. .. Whether moderator or member - I think people direct their efforts and time into tribes (and people) which interest them. I also think the role of mod in tribes vary.. sometimes as a host, sometimes as the centre of attention, sometimes as policeman, sometimes simply being another member who administers the tribe.. Some mods feel a strong personal responsibility to see them succeed and hence post post post.. Some mods feel personal "ownership" while others are simply "custodians" of them.. some are just plain old indifferent - while yet another class of tribers seem to like to collect moderatorships as some form of self-validation.. All these will affect a tribe - especially the commitment of the mod to make it an active tribe - and how intelligent and resourceful approaching that goal.

I think additional big factors in tribal activity is why the tribe exists, whether is has a broad or narrow focus and also the members and the relationships (or lack thereof) between those members..

Mark Morford is the quietest Tribe I mod. It has 131 members and is about the San Fran news-columnist Mark Morford morford.tribe.net/ The narrow focus is probably restrictive.. It was created in April 04 so many of the members are not active on tribe.. I sort of regard myself as a "caretaker" mod until we can find someone with a Passion about Mark Morford who can also demonstrate they will be a good mod (hint... hint.. ) I sometimes think I should rebirth with a broader mandate to discuss the media but I think the tribe is valuable for it provides specific information and discussion focused to something which folk might be interested in.. just because a tribe is inactive does not mean it is worthless.. I get lots of good information and read interesting discussions even in tribes which have been "dead" for ages..

I love the Trivia Tribe.. because I love the folk there.. but also I love Trivia ! When ever it gets quiet I try and post and come up with ideas to keep it informative and entertaining .. its focus seems a little boarder than when it started .. and in some ways that reflects my hope to keep it vibrant.. Join it readers ! tribes.tribe.net/triviarocks

The others are private and small tribes centring around friendships -so the topics are very broad with the exception of a Masonic one (but once again that's just friends with a focus.. because all in it are passionate about Freemasonry.... but they share themselves thee as well and will post about their new dog or problems.. it will often out post tribes which have fifty times the members of that tribe.. )

As for asking for help.. I sure do ! I also tend to pimp the trivia tribe all over the place :)
