Re: Harassment?
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 7:54 AMThe lone trolls / flamers are easy to deal with. Simply ignoring them seems to work the best.
It's the malevolent types who fit the real cyberstalker profile en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberstalking you must be careful about - particularly the organized criminal elements (yeah, they do exist)
Contact law enforcement. Eventhough the cops might not take actions, your complaint is on file. The FBI does monitor certain types of suspicious activity on the www and these incident reports are all compiled in their databases.

Why not do everyone a favor and post the creeps tribe handle along with a description of his harasment. There is no reason to protect their identity.

Tue, February 26, 2008 - 2:42 PMWhy do people bother others online? I really think that is the lowest kind of person! How BORED do you have to be to pick on people you have never met? Just report them and get on with your life, some people will always be a bully. -

Re: Harassment?
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 2:51 PMThat is a damn good question, sir. There are a certain number of really vile bastards out there. And as I was demonstrating for a friend the other day, it is childishly easy to get a lot of vital information on most people these days. -

Re: Harassment?
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 2:54 PMMaybe I'm wrong but I think you have to be seriously messed up and have a very small life to find the need to upset people online. Some people just want to come on here and create all kinds of trouble and I don't see the reason for it, they must have little to live for outside of this little metal box. -
-
Re: Harassment?
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 2:57 PMOh, no doubt. But they're still out there and people need to learn how to deal with it. And online security is a learnable skill, just like other forms of self-defense.

Re: Harassment?
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 3:01 PMPeople do need to learn how to deal with it, we will all meet a bastard in our lives at some point either on or offline and people need to know how to cope with it. And online security advice should be provided to the masses, some people still give out there private details and see nothing wrong with it even with all the hype. -

Re: Harassment?
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 3:33 PMTribe.net doesn't give a shit about online harrassment, stalking etc... That said, here's some helpful tips to identify the worst elements:
When identifying cyberstalking "in the field," and particularly when considering whether to report it to any kind of legal authority, the following features or combination of features can be considered to characterize a true stalking situation: malice, premeditation, repetition, distress, obsession, vendetta, no legitimate purpose, personally directed, disregarded warnings to stop, harassment, and threats.[3]
* False accusations. Many cyberstalkers try to damage the reputation of their victim and turn other people against them. They post false information about them on websites. They may set up their own websites for this purpose. They post allegations about the victim to newsgroups and chat rooms.
* Attempts to gather information about the victim. Cyberstalkers may approach their victim's friends, family and work colleagues to obtain personal information. They may advertise for information on the Internet, or hire a private detective.
* Encouraging others to harass the victim. Many cyberstalkers try to involve third parties in the harassment. They may claim the victim has harmed the stalker or his family in some way, or may post the victim's name and telephone number in order to encourage others to join the pursuit.
* False victimization. The cyberstalker will claim that the victim is harassing him. Bocij writes that this phenomenon has been noted in a number of well-known cases.
* Attacks on data and equipment. They may try to damage the victim's computer by sending viruses.
* Ordering goods and services. They order items or subscribe to magazines in the victim's name. These often involve subscriptions to pornography or ordering sex toys then having them delivered to the victim's workplace.
* Arranging to meet. Young people face a particularly high risk of having cyberstalkers try to set up meetings between them.[4

Re: Harassment?
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 3:42 PMIf the on-line harassment consists of threats of violence (or even veiled threats), blackmail, extortion, or any other threatening or coercive behavior, you should go to the police, especially if you live in city that has a police department large enough to include a high tech crimes division. You might be surprised to find they are sophisticated in these matters and will pursue them.
If someone is just annoying you on tribe, that's not a criminal matter, and complaining to the TOU GUY is unreliable, unless of course, you are complaing about me. Try ignoring them. If you have the self discipline to ignore them, there is a good chance they will lose interest. It will not work instanntly, but give it time, and it will in most cases.
And if they don't lose interest after you ignore them, well then, at least you know what you are dealing with, and you also then have clean hands in the matter.
The worst thing you can do, I have learned, is troll or flame them back, or otherwise engage them public. This can cause you to look like the bad guy, and a favorite tactic of on-line stalkers is to play the victim whenever their victims fight back. -
