What do you think of video blogging?

topic posted Sat, June 21, 2008 - 9:17 AM by  Unsubscribed
I've been thinking of starting a little video blog, but I'm debating whether it would be something I could keep up. I enjoy those that others keep up, but there is definitely a loss of privacy to some extent.

Anyone here keep a video blog? Thoughts?

I don't know anyone who does it...you could be my first!! And you're purdy to look at, and you have a cute chicken, and you could film it in your awesome library, and, and, and <bounce>. Yeah, I say go for it ; ).

I had never seen one before. I don't know that I had even heard of it before you brought it up here. I do like seeing yours, and the way you have started it off, too, in a candid sort of way. It is nice getting to know you a little better by hearing your voice and seeing you talk to us through the camera. It's almost like meeting you, yes.

I think it's a nice way to blog, now that I have seen it.

I would be pleased to ahve some company. It's an odd feeling, actually, to be seen. I am going to try to stick with it for a little while an see if it grows on me. I think once the initial "um... err..." stuff starts to decrease, I might get more comfortable. Mostly, its just odd to be looking at a camera and trying to make "eye contact" with a lens.

No doubt the Mr. Potato Head will help with that. :D

I have to say that this is fantastic, Simpleton. I imagine Jay especially would be very proud of this as a prime example of the Psychological Effects of Online Friends and how we all interact. Very brave, very interesting, long may it continue!

That is so cool Simpleton!! Really nice idea and you are so brave, I'd never be able to do that! Once I played it back I would hate my voice, hair, face and end up not posting it. So glad that someone has the guts to try it out, hope you keep it up because it's really interesting, you could do news reports next ;)

So, as a concept, what do you all think?

                Here are my initial thoguths:

                1) As I said about 8 times in video #2, (groan), it's interesting to me to see the mannerisms that I either start using when i am feeling self conscoius or use all the time and haven't noticed.

                2) Man, there are a lot of toys that I suddenly feel I can't live without. Better camera, mic, lighting, editing programs, several bloody marys, a guy with a bullhorn and some intern-type to yell "quiet on the set", etc.

                3) I am finding that my shy-o-meter is going nuts; countered by my curious streak, so I am interested in having people comment, and worrie that people will comment, in nearly equal amounts.

                4) I have to have something to talk about beforehand, or theformat will likely continue to be: " um um, (fuss with hair) um er, (wildly wave hands) hey, what about his weather (eyebrow action) oh no, a hairball! CUT!!!"

So.... my question for you is: Does having seen/ heard me make it different to read posts from me? Are you, for example, hearing my voice in your head as you read this? How does having seen me change your perceptions of me? I am curious in general, not so much about me me me, but using myself as an example.

I once saw an interview with a writer whom I had really enjoyed up until that point, but after hearing him interviewed, I could never read his books without hearing his voice. It was kind of frustrating, because when he was 'invisible' to my mind's eye, I could just react to his writing, but once I could envision him, I couldn't not envision him. But this has not happened with every writer I've seen read.

I know what you mean about the mannerism thing. I had friends pass around a video camera at my wedding, and in re-watching the hour or so of footage, I noted a LOT of quirks (particularly that I gesticulate a lot when I talk...oh, and I also mess with my hair CONSTANTLY). Actually, your vlog makes me curious to film myself and see if I still do it <lol>.

Now that you mention it, I do read your post and see your face in my mind, which I really didn't before, even though I'd seen photos of you. I hadn't thought about it, really...the difference between the Tribe friends that I know in real life and the once that I do not, and how I envision them when we talk. There are several people that I IM with extensively, and I really *don't* picture them much (probably 'cause I hate typing and that takes up my whole brain <lol>).

Anyhow, I love the vlog thing, and like I said in my comment on it (if that one worked), I wouldn't be surprised if you started a trend : ). It really does make you seem closer, and makes me feel as though I know you better. Thanks for doing it!! Now you can come over and teach me how, right ; )?

For some reason, it is NOT accepting my comments on YouTube. This is annoying. Anyhow, I *did* comment (again), but I guess you won't see that...too bad I've forgotten what I wrote. I think that I need a cup of tea.

hmm. I don't know what the problem would be, but I'll recheck the settings. ( I can't have blocked you already, eh?)

OK. So, lets do a little poll, shall we:

                      Loki. Do you pronounce this:

                      A) Low Key
                      B) Lah Key
                      C) Low-Kai (Rhymes with No Pie)
                      D) Other (please specify.)

I have received feedback from a certain, fellow, who feels that I have, just possibly, done something tweaky to the vowels of his beloved English language. Thoughts?

You did NOT block me!!! <stompflouncepout>!!! I'll retract my cupcake offer if you did ;-P. Okay, no I won't.

As for Loki, I dunno how *he* pronounced is, but I've always pronounced it "low key", since that's how I learned to pronounce the name of the god, and I'm Swedish, so I know all <rotfl>. Okay, I don't, but my grandparents pronounced it that way, and I believed them : ).

Simpleton, reading your posts is more enjoyable for me than it was before your vlogs. I am aware of your face as I read your words, but the words are still sounding like a version of my own voice (as most things that I read are). After I have seen your vlogs a few more times, I am likely to start reading your words with your voice in mind, and the style in which you deliver your sentences.

I know what you mean about listening to an author read his own books and how it can alter how much you enjoy the book. I have come across authors who read their words in a way that doesn't particularly resonate with me, and so I prefer to just read their words without the influence of knowing their actual voice and emphasis on certain words in a sentence.

I am finding with reading your posts since watching your vlog that you come across as even more intelligent than I had already thought. So I think it adds to the experience of the written word to have seen you on video talking to us on Tribe. :-)

                  Keep it up!
