So I joined this tribe the other day and I've been looking at other journals on here to kind of get an idea of whats what exactly, lol.
My main problem is finding the time and a place to practice. The best time for me to practice is early in the morning (like around 6) and late at night so i guess my real problem would be finding the strength and motivation. I also want to focus on drilling but I dont think I know what a drill is exactly, lol. Is it basically like doing the same move over and over or am I missing something? :)
Im going to try and practice this evening after work so I should have an update very soon, also if someone wants to give me some tips on how to set up a practice or possibly give me some ideas of moves to drill that would be great! :)

Re: Aaminah's Practice Journal
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 2:21 PMFinding time is hard.. for a lot of us, so you are definately NOT alone in trying to squeeze and extra hour out of a day.
You are correct, drilling is most often practicing the same move over and over and over again, building the memory of the muscle and smoothing out any spots that are inconsistent.
This is what I do to set up my drills...
I make a list of the moves where I am the weakest, {for me this is one side of my body and traveling movements). I did this on flash cards to make it more interesting for myself.
I shuffle my flash cards and then pull out a card turn on some music (even if it doesn't fit the noise is good) and I work on that one move for a minimum of 1 song... I leave that card out when the song is over and then pull a new card from the pile... and repeat.
Because I have very little extra time in my day... this is usually 3- 5 moves.
Once I have the max number of moves that time allows for... I work through each of those cards for a song or two...
Then, I keep those cards out and the next day I reshuffle the deck with those less cards and work on new stuff.
I continue this until the end of the week and then look at every thing I have worked on. Some weeks the pile is big... others not so big... But boy.. Do I feel accomplished at the end of a week when I have a big pile.
This works for me... I hope it helps to give you an idea or two -

Re: Aaminah's Practice Journal
Sat, December 1, 2007 - 6:55 AMOh what a wonderful idea! :) I only got as far as setting up a semi-structured practice but I rarely have time to get through the whole thing. Im definitely going to give the flash cards a try. I have class tomorrow but Monday I will be up good and early to practice (and if time doesnt allow I will be drilling). Hopefully keeping a practice journal will help keep me motivated. :)
Also would practicing belly rolls at work for about 3 mins count as drilling? -

Worked a 10 hour shift and was really bored so I did a few drills today at work I wasnt really able to count how many so I tried to pay attention to the time:
Belly Rolls (both up and down) through two christmas songs, lol, so Im going to estimate it at about 4-5 mins
Omi's both directions (some fast some slow) 5 mins
Horizontal Figure 8's 3 mins
Chest lifts (slow) about 15 times [during my break so I didnt look like a weirdo, lol]

Thu, December 6, 2007 - 7:23 AM12/2/07
So we ended up not having class sunday however I did do a small BD related workout: I did 50 crunches (and 25 reverse crunches), 40 squats, glute squeezes for about 5 mins, I did the plank pose for a full minute, and I did about 30 push ups.
12/4/07
Had a short class tonight (no teacher so we practiced for an hour). Did a lot of zills work.
12/5/07
Cleaning my room and listening to music is quite inspiring (and distracting) I drilled a lot of footwork (arabic 1,2 & 3, and some other patterns but I dont know what they're called, lol), spins (big spins, fast spins, slow spins, spirals), drilled some arm work.
GOAL: to get back to having more structured practices, I forgot how much fun it is to dance in my room even if I do occasionally knock a few things over, lol.

Re: Aaminah's Practice Journal
Mon, December 17, 2007 - 2:13 PMSo I've had class since my last post (a few actually I just forget to post in here)
Saturday night I got the urge to do a little dancing, lol. I practiced for about 40 mins of full dancing so it was kind of a practice and kind of just a lot of improv to some songs I've been listening to.
