Do you hand sew the fabric, or use a machine? Did you have training to do your own costumes??

Do you use any material that's not fabric??

I typically sew my own things.I rarely use patterns. I sometimes get help from friends like when I needed a giant inhaler back pack for my Allergy Girl costume my friend helped.

I do both hand & machine sewing, mostly depending on if I can get what I'm working under the machine needle or not.

As far as training.. my Mom & Grandma showed me how to use the machine, the rest has all been learning by doing.

I've used video tape, tool drawer liner, screen mesh, volleyball nets & more for costumes.. anything's fair game if it looks like it wil work! :)

I use an old 1940's singer knockoff I bought from a BRC Ranger, side-threaded and no backstitch...
It's not the industrial machine my house mate had years ago, but if you've ever used an industrial, the lack of a backstitch is normal.

For canvas and theater curtains I borrow Callibug's walking foot machine.
I haven't used it on sheer fabrics, but they are supposed to be great for that too.

I did enough hand stitching during my Renn Faire years to last a lifetime...
Besides, can you imagine hand sewing stilt pants?

All materials have their uses, no material is sacred...
    only challenging!
