Shopping for materials

For ppl who make outfits!

Where do you buy, how do you choose the fabrics, the threads, etc. And do you already have a plan when you go shopping, or as you're checking stuff a brilliant idea comes up??

There are awesome finds at thrift shops. I tend to buy pieces, take them apart and reinvent them. I just love doing that

I must say, when I go shopping, I have a slight idea of what I am looking for and what I am going to do. However, most of the time, I get lost in the fabric store and come home with more fabric than I had intended or needed; I love beautiful fabric and I really have a hard time leaving it behind. It is not a loss, I use what I need and then stash the rest for eventually, I'll have another project and there is no need to go shopping; I already have the fabric stashed in the "fabric" closet =D

I have a question that is off topic.

For the last 5-6 years I have noticed a lot of clashing patterns and colors
      as fashion.
The best stuff seem to be what you do - deconstruct something really bad and
improve upon the original designer intent.
Still just layers of 'clash' seems to be enough.

Do you ever clash materials and colors. Is it an instinct thing or can you give guidelines?

I buy fabric when I see something that makes me go "OH MY GOD I NEED THAT" unless i have a project in mind. Then, if its easy or basic, I head over to JoAnns for the fabric. I also frequent thrift shops for things to take apart and reassemble as something better :D

Usually the fabric gives me the ideas, but a few times, its gone the other way around (for costuming specifically)

I have so many projects planned and so little time. I have boxes of fabric and then at least one box of clothes to remake. Really it starts to get a bit crazy then I have to weed things out. I usually try to get things for free so I don't feel bad when I get rid of stuff. Oh, and if you can find free stuff it saves so much money and you don't feel bad when you mess up your idea. I use what I can from scraps for quilts and dress up clothes for my kids and other peoples kids.

I definitely do the thrift store thing, especially when on a low time & dollar budget.

Sometimes I'm given a colour palette to work with (I do costuming as my profession). Other times, everything just seems to magically fall into place. Other times the theme of the piece gives me inspiration.

I have no fear in mixing fabrics & patterns. I do take into consideration how the garment will be cleaned. Different fabrics react differently to cleaning, and can have some unhappy results. I don't see it as using clashing pattern & colour combinations as much as I see it as using unexpected or uncommon combinations. There's really no science in it for me.. it's intuition & experimentation.

For threads, for the most part, I use standard sewing thread (I lean towards Gutterman brand). You don't have to use thread that matches in colour.. White, black & a good medium neutral grey will serve you well. A good guideline is to unspool a bit of thread & lay it across the fabric you're going to be sewing.. if it blends in & that's what you want it to do.. that's the thread to use.

        Happy creating!
