( Ozark bioregion) In the realm of ground covers are either strawberries or violets detrimental to the soil? Either possibly nitrogen fixing? Any benefits ,other than dense cover for weed blockage?

Tue, November 11, 2008 - 10:32 AMso are violets! (plus they both have medicinal uses too)
I like to candy them (egg white + superfine sugar) every winter as gifts for my cake-making friends!
and how timely a post SUNDOG as just this past weekend I was noticing the rain-renewed battle of these very two groundcovers near my living dogwood couch...mmmsweet berries and flowers! that corner seems healthy to me and I'm not sure either of these plants I would consider detrimental to the soil where they are growing. they are not so dense as to prevent other plants from invading though.

Re: Strawberries are Red, Violets are blue....
Mon, November 10, 2008 - 4:44 AMNeither strawberries or violets are bad for soil or nitrogen fixing to my knowledge, and i can find no evidence saying that they are online after a quick search. I am not 100% positive about this, but pretty sure. The chief benefit, imo, is that they hold the soil together and protect it from erosion. -

Tue, April 21, 2009 - 2:49 AMHmm, strawberries, beans, and violets, yummy.
I'm not sure I'd want to eat all of them at once, though.
