Re: home made bricks
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 12:50 PMgreetings!
i worked with Cob and we made some bricks.
i also witness how indian build traditionnal houses
in southern india.
they use adobe (bricks made of the same (more or less)mixture than cob , minus the straw)
covered with a thick plaster of cob.
be sure to add plenty of sand if you have a clay soil.
actually , it need to be over 60% sand.
as if you let dry a block of clay, ultimately it will shrink and crack.
so, i recommend you to make "test bricks"
these are made with different ratios clay/sand.
like making different batch of pancake batter and choosing the "one" batter!!!!!!!
after they are dry you'll see what ratio is the most solid(not too soft -not too brittle)
mix-well.
"fabrick" yourself a small frame (a box with no top nor bottom)
pack your best mixture in the frame on smooth surface a piece of plywood per example.
let them dry for quite a long time under the sun . cover them if it drie

Mon, April 14, 2008 - 11:01 PMFor real fired ceramic bricks you're going to need an ass load of fuel. I'd look at cob and other alternative building methods to use your clay. t -

Sun, April 20, 2008 - 8:51 AMThank you all for your response. I guess I have to get a truck load of sand...erg, $$$. I had actually planned to build with cob and learned that you still have to make test bricks. Thank you for the beautiful photos.

Re: home made bricks
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 7:38 PMHi. Just Joined and saw this and had to post. A week ago I just made my first test bricks. Its easy and fun and if you have clay on your land you have one of the most used building materials in the world. You need about three sunny weeks to sun dry your bricks so if the weather looks good, get a tarp, a pile of clay, some sand 60%or 70% depending on your clay. Decomposed granite makes the best bricks. You can add straw to bricks it helps the brick hold up to shrinking and expanding and gives it some sterngth. Try some different mixes mash it up with your bear feet. And have fun.Start small with your construction. Keep your bricks from coming in contact with water. And you'll be sucsessful.
