I recently took a new personality assessment called Print through a coaching friend. When I received the results, I was a bit surprised. This assessment is very similar to the Enneagram--you receive a major and minor number (your motivator), which are the same descriptions as the Enneagram types. After over 10 years of using the Enneagram, I'm quite certain my type is a 4w5 (I thought I was a 5w4 for a couple years because I have such a strong 5 wing). However, with Print, I tested as a Major: 5, Minor: 9. 9?? Where did that come from? What happened to my 4? Could the assessment know something I don't?
After my two debriefs, I started to see where the 9 was coming in. With Print, you don't know the strength of each number (was 9 maybe just a point of two higher than 4?). So that got me curious. Am I 9ish? I took a couple online tests here (a link from a previous tribe post in another tribe): www.eclecticenergies.com/enneagram/ In one, I tested as a 5w4, and in the other, a 9! Hmm...I've never felt any affinity with type 9. It isn't even connected through integration lines. And, motivations are thought to remain constant throughout life.
So, what happened? Although I know myself extremely well, did I overlook my type? I don't think so. Yet, 9 is popping up everywhere nowadays. I want my 4 back--I gotta be special : )
Has anyone else experienced "type drift"?

Re: The Merits of Personality Tests vs. Personal Reflection--Enneagram
Mon, March 6, 2006 - 9:18 AMI can't say I've drifted, but I did read the definitions posted for Type 9 and think I may have found a reason. In the test they attribute the types to the chakras, as in Type 9's are "associated with the Navel chakra and ...with the Throat chakra". Chakra energy is, am I'm sure you are aware, constantly changing, sometimes being blocked and sometimes opening up more fully. This may possibly explain the drift you are experiencing.
I did read the definitions for the Type 9 person, and it really doesn't fit you for the most part, in my opinion. Go with the 4 or 5.

Re: The Merits of Personality Tests vs. Personal Reflection--Enneagram
Mon, March 6, 2006 - 9:45 AMi took the first test, and it typed me as 4w3, which i mostly agree with. (i once thought 4w5, but i'm not that dark, try as i might!) ;-)
on the 2nd test - "Instinctual Variant" - i came up 7w8 SX, which makes some sense, since i rate high on 7 usually. the 8 indicates more self-confidence than i generally feel, which was an interesting thing to consider. the SX part makes total sense. :-)
what's wierd, tho, is that on the first test, 7 didn't even appear, and on the 2nd, 4 was way down on the list. so obviously, these tests are not nearly as accurate or consistent as they're given credit for.
or rather more to the point, WE aren't. the "self" we like to believe in as solid and continous, in fact isn't, but is really just a reflection of how memory is organized in the brain.
or so it appears.
which reminds me of a great quote from the Lankavatara Sutra:
"things are not what they seem, nor are they otherwise."
