A new camera. I used to use a nikon from the 70's all manual and since it has been stolen a few years a go I have been lost without it. Finally someone has offered to get me a new camera and I thought I would go with a digital SLR. I was looking at the Nikon D40x and D80. Does anyone have any suggestions, comments, hints, great prices to get them?
Thank you

Fri, December 7, 2007 - 5:35 PMAlthough b & h photo and broadway photo are outstanding sources be careful of w\at they offer as imported warranties. I have learned that the prices seem right. The performance of the cameras are not. Usually the warranties are by the srores instead of the camera companues' US headquarters.

Re: In the market for....
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 11:11 AMfor shopping, start with resellerratings.com It won't list all the places, but certainly will the lower price ones. Reviews on both equipment and the stores. Ebay can also be quite good.
For picking a camera, dpreview.com is one of the first places I go.
Going from manual, i.e. film, to digital also requires a digital darkroom. The king of the crowd is photoshop and if you've got the bucks, that is the way to go. But if you don't there are alternatives, and for about 70 to 90 percent of what you might want to do, most of them will work ok.

First of all, more megapixels is not always better. It actually can lead to worse pictures - more ugly digital noise, and worse colors.
Start by reading this:
www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm
And he actually prefers to D40 to the D40x. And the prices on that camera are great. If you want to, spend the extra money on a better lens.

Mon, December 3, 2007 - 12:53 AMCanon and Nikon are the 2 most versatule SLR cameras on the narket. I peronally use the Canon Rebel Xt for digital and Rebel Ti when I am in the mood for 35mm. Both have been great cameras for me especially when I am taking pictures of bees and butterflies.

Mon, December 3, 2007 - 10:14 AMAnother question....
I was checking out these bundle websites like digicombo.com. Has anyone delt with them before? There are high ratings, but I just don't know how I feel about the website. It doesn't seem to be too ligit.
Thank you for all the answers by the way. I am really excited to get a camera. I am leaning more towards the d80 because I heard the camera is better for rougher conditions. I am not very gentle with my current camera and was putting that into consideration. -

Re: In the market for....
Mon, December 3, 2007 - 11:11 AMIf you go to Photo.net, they have lists of legit and bad websites. Beware,Some of these too good to be true sites ARE too good to be true. The longer established the site is, the better you can depend on it. B and H, KEH, MIdwest photo exchange have all been around for a while, and are fairly good merchants. A quick search of the net found some bad reviews at Bizrate. I've included the link. One way to check is to google the name of the company followed by the word review. Pulls up lots for you to read, including threads from DPreview, a solid review comppany. Good luck finding your deal....
