I ran over my camera case

I ran over my camera case. Twice, actually. In my car. First, I backed over it. Thinking it was the curb I had backed over, I went forward and ran over it again. I won't go into the details, but it was a comedy of errors, and I had to move my car real fast, and was forced to back up real quickly bla bla bla. It was the most boneheaded thing I've ever done, that's for sure.

Inside the bag was my new Nikon D200 body and all four of my lenses. Somehow, the D200 survived and seems to work fine (Nikon will be getting a letter of appreciation). But all four of my lenses are trashed, so I'm basically crippled as a photographer. And I'm not making a bunch of money right now.

But here's the thing: it's not that big of a deal. I guess all of that internal work I've been doing these past few years has really paid off. Those lenses are just things, and they've traveled with me for five years and have focused in on thousands of amazing landscapes. I used the shit out of them. My friend Jeremy pulled up right after the fiasco happened. I was still in a state of shock, but was already processing. He said to me, "Jay, you just destroyed your lifeblood." And I looked at him and said, "No I didn't. My lifeblood runs inside of me. It is my heart and soul and eyes that takes these pictures." It was amazing to hear those words come out of my mouth. I will rebuild. I will work harder to sell my work now, and I will get even better glass. Which I've needed to do anyway. So it's all good. It's a pain in the ass, that's for sure. And I need to figure out something by Burning Man in six weeks, because that is my favorite place to photograph. And I will be there with a working outfit to capture the beauty. I need everywhere from 18 mm to at least 300 mm to capture it the Jay Newman way. I'll figure it out.

Just wanted to share that with you all. We are artists. And it is not the material objects that we "own" that makes that art. It is us.

sorry, but congrats! I think that was one of those incidents in life that at first seem like a disaster, but is actually a blessing in disguise. I think they really show you where you internal compass is pointing, and give you a nudge to make a decision and start heading down a particular path when before you were more comfortable and stagnant. I have a feeling this is going to take you to the next level. nice job! ; )

    Hey Jay,
It's the universe telling you its time to switch to Canon! lol
    *smile*

Seriously, sorry to hear about your loss -I would have sh*t my pants!!!
Time to hit the sale rack, or Shutterbug's Used Lenses pages...

Keep you chin up, sounds like you're handling it well. Good for you.

With every change there is always the potential for greatness to come out of it.
(this is where some kind-hearted Triber reads your post and realizes he/she has tons of Nikon gear in their closet they have no intention of using and 'donates' it to you) *grin*
    Peace brother,

Maybe it will turn into a blessing in disguise.

Can you afford to go and pick up one lens? A cheap lens?

In the Zen of things, perhaps having just one lens will force you to stretch your limits and try new and different things with good results.

P.S. Sorry for your loss though.

    Crap!
Have you contacted your insurance company, car, home whatever?
If push comes to shove I probably have an extra Nikon mount lenses you could use, OR, just jump back on your medium format.
    Improvise!
You are also welcome to use my 8008 that you had for a while. One of my sutdents has it right now but does not use it heavily at all.

Thanks everyone. The body seems to work fine, so that's a big relief, and I'll pick up a used lens when I get paid on Friday, just so I can shoot something! You guys rock!

thanks for sharing. I think just talking about it helps to go to the next thing, because there is the pain in loss as well as the lessons and expansion and blah blah blah. Sounds like you're in a good place. Have a great time at burning man too. That is most definately the ultimate photo spot. (really all of Nevada is!)

One thing I want to share with you - when I was younger (college age) I would document all my experiences with my camera. That's when photography really became a thing for me, and I used it to experience life. At the time I was going through some pretty traumatic stuff that I won't get into here, but the camera was my tool for dealing, as well as the way I remmeber much of my life during that time. Art and life were interchangeable. My camera was ALWAYS on my neck. Then, at 25, i began to travel and decided not to bring my camera and see what happened for me without it. This was a big shift to suddenly go without my metal. I went on the preface of not wanting to lose it, but I also intuitively knew I wanted to see what it would fell like having only a memoryof what I saw in my mind - I couldn't show it to anyone else with a picture. I decided to trust my internal memory and my eyes to live my life for a while, without the camera in the middle. In the end I stopped taking photos for years. Every once in a while I did, but not regularly. Now I am back in the swing of it and truly enoying it. the break I took was good because it was during that time that I did a lot of internal work, a lot of observing, a lot of taking in.

I am not saying this is your message to yourself, I was just compelled to share my story with you becasue it is always interesting to find the meaning in our bond to these things, the transformations in our art, and in general just the curveballs life throws at us.

Thanks for sharing and thanks fo reading.

      Thanks Phoebe,

You hit the nail on the head. Sometimes it's good to experience life through the lens; other times it's good to take a break and just let it all come in without the filter. My photography has always been in cycles. I'll shoot like a madman for a few months (like this spring), then hang it up for a month to reconnect. Since photography is such an all-encompassing experience for me, I have to take these breaks. And this snafu happened just as I am ready for a respit. When late summer kicks in in Southern Oregon, the clouds all go away, the haze settles in, and the hills turn brown. So I usually pack it in anyway to enjoy life with my friends...until Burning Man, and then the autumn colors which follow soon after.

It's good to take breaks from your craft, whatever it is, so you don't get burnt out and can come back with new eyes. The same is true for my guitar playing. I'll be back out there, and when I am, I will be better than ever!

      Anyway, rock on, you all!

I can't even take the time to read the responses to your post before saying --

    JAY NEWMAN, YOU ROCK!!

What an incredible place to be.

Maybe you could make piece of art from the remnants of the lenses... That would be awesome...
I can't wait to hear part II of the story -- where new lenses miraculously find their ways to you through magical synchronicity and the generosity and abundance of the universe! (Even if you just go buy 'em, it'd still be good... :))

Congrats on the new brain and thanks for the reminder...

My deepest condolances and sincerest praise!!! I have been living on constant fear of my equipment for the last 6 weeks, but have grown accustomed to snugling at night. I hope this photo from Cristiania, Denmark can seems as (somehow) fitting to you as it does to me.

I can empathize with you, in BM 2002 I had just purchased a used hensel and during a try out before heading out from NYC, it fell over and the flash head broke. No one at the time had any replacements.....

Try ebay btw for your replacements...

Will I see u on the playa?

Just want to echo everyone else and say "Wow", that's an amazing response. Even if you had second thoughts here and there, it's great to have that ability to let go. Every loss creates a space for new joy, if we can just stay open.

I think the universe does provide...so now you are ready for a new set of lenses and a new perspective on the meaning of your vocation....
