I'm a Romana trained Pilates Method teacher. I was trained by her in 1993 - 1994 in West Hollywood, that's when she was coming out to California. Mari Winsor took some of the training classes when I was training and wow look where she is now! Guess I should have hustled more! Oh well. I obviously was trained in the traditional method, and overall I keep it traditional when I train people. I will occasionally modify, but prefer not to. The most frustrating thing for me...is when I would teach Pilates, such as mat classes, people would get confused because of all the variations in the styles out there. I do think that some people jumped on the bandwagon when it started getting big. So for me, it's been a frustrating journey. I absolutely LOVE Pilates. It's my favorite workout. The closest of the styles to mine I would say was the Physical Mind Institute. What a kick ass workout it is! When I did the teacher's training when I was in optimum shape, or so I thought, boy was I humbled by Romana doing the mat exercises better then me, and she was in her early 70's. I tend to also prefer the Gratz equipment, and dislike the Allegro very much - I think it's not very safe, especially the foot strap. I like some of Peak's equipment , too! I'd actually like to pick up a Personal reformer (Balanced Body's) and a Stamina chair to take to clients. Anyone know where I might find one or both? I trained on the West Side of Los Angeles. I have a business called Body-Conditioning-Unlimited.com. I look forward to talking to other Pilates people. I really lucked out being trained by Romana, at the time I did it, I had no clue who she was or anything about Pilates. Must have been meant to be! I just saw an ad in a dance magazine and said I want to learn that. That's before anyone knew what Pilates was. The most frustrating thing for me is if a client trains in one method and then another, it's very confusing for them. There's no consistency, and for me it's a pain to have to explain why there's a difference. I don't care what a client chooses to do, that's their choice, but I do mind having to explain why what I'm doing is completely different from someone else. I think more people need to be educated on all the "differences, history and background" of Pilates.
