Hi, everyone. I am new to pilates and looking for some advice. I have a handful of DVDs I like to do at home. Right now, I'm doing at least an abs section 1-2x a week and lifting heavy weights 2-3x a week. in addition to cardio and dance class. Honestly, I feel like I have too much muscle, particularly in my arms and am considering dropping the weights and using pilates for the strengthening portion of my workout plans. So, I guess my questions are whether pilates can replace a strength training routine and how often should I do pilates? Pretty basic...

You can replace weights with pilates but I recommend that you do two classes a week on the reformer. You won't bulk up but you will get increased muscle tone plus weight bearing for bones.

A belated thanks for the response! All the studios near me on that site say they have just mat workouts. Hmmm... I would love to try the reformer, but might be pricey on top of the gym and dance classes.

I like using 2 pound hand weights for my arms/upper-half routines, along with my Pilates floor or reformer workouts. Any more than 2 pounds, I find, I will put on bulk. While lifting, I focus in on the movements coming from the core & building strength.

2 lbs is really a perfect amount for women. As the weight starts to feel easier, just add more resistance to the movement and it should be plenty difficult. It's recommended for guys use 4-5lbs.
