Does anyone have any experience with/opinion of this dvd?

www.amazon.com/Pilates-In.../B000V6LT1M

I was getting a little bored with my normal pilates routine and so when I stumbled across this title, I thought, "Why not?" So I netflixed it and tried it.

Two days later, I'm still sore. And not a good "wow, I really worked my core" sore. More like "Will I ever be able to move again without my abs screaming in pain?" sore. And I have my first bellydance performance this upcoming Sunday, but right now it hurts too much to practice!

I've been doing Winsor pilates for years, so I was surprised to get so sore. I think the routine focused too much on lower abs... they feel like they've been through some sort of medieval torture device, while my upper abs and obliques are fine.

Also, I'm curious if the alignment/technique that "Chaos" (the instructor) uses is correct/safe.
For example, in the series where you lie on your side and do leg work, I've always been instructed to stretch the arm that's on the floor out above my head, then bend that arm at the elbow and prop my head up on my hand.
This dvd told me to place my forearm/elbow on the floor and prop my whole torso up. (so your torso is at a 45 degree angle to the floor.) It felt wrong, so I stopped oing it after a few reps.

So basically, I'm wondering if someone more knowledgable can tell me if this is actually a good dvd and I just did too much too soon, or if it's bad technique/instruction and I should stay far, far away from it. :)

Also, any advice for getting rid of the soreness? I've been trying to stretch by reaching up and gently arching my back, and I've been applying arnica gel. Any other tricks or tips?

Thanks!

I've not tried this video but looking at the cover , the model has her elbows hyper-extended and her knees slightly bent. Not the best form.

I've never heard of it. A great website to check out DVD's is collagevideo.com, you can actually see what it's like before you buy it. They have previews. Mari Winsor is more or less traditional, she was trained in the Romana's Pilates, but has made some changes, I believe. Collage Video have staff that rate the DVD's on their quality. There are lots of different styles of Pilates out there. Depends on your needs and wants. Denise Austin has a degree in exercise physiology, so doing her workouts, definitely won't hurt you. She knows her stuff. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask, between us all, I'm sure we can steer you to a safe, sound and good workout, where you won't be thrashed by the workout!

Just saw another post about a Denise DVD, so maybe you should ditch that suggestion - I am actually surprised about that. But really collagevideo.com is awesome and will be a great help - between that and just asking someone that has the educational knowledge, you can find the one that's right for you. Pilates really is an exercise that is better taught in person to do it correctly. It's a very challenging workout and works deep into the muscles.
