New Year's ???

OK, so the owners of a local business(es) have approached me and asked for me to help setup a New Year's Eve celebration that would be in the vein of a SCAdian / BurningMan party. The venue is in the SouthSide on a Carson St. corner, has plenty of outdoor space as well as indoor. You can guess which one for now =P

Preliminary discussions yeilded the following ideas:

Admission would be something like $7-10
Pot Luck - bring a dish and admission is waived.
NewYear's drink specials.
Space for fire performers.
Space for music jam and open dancing.
We'll have a few slated/scheduled performances.
Prolly a DJ and PA available, probably 80's, industrial and world dance (like 'Pandemic')
A few wacky games planned.

I'd really like to get some input on this idea, appreaciate some feedback.

Does this sound like something you'd do for New Year's?
Do you think other people in your community (Burn/SCA) would be interested?
Costume party: good/bad idea?
Any suggestions, what would you like to see for your community on this?

Thanks!! Any feedback appreciated, and I promise it will carry weight.

Fearless Anti-Organizer,
Jacques

NYC Decompression 2009 - Sat, Oct 17th

Dearest Burners,

An epic re-jiggering of humanity is upon us. In this moment of transformation and transcendence (literally “The End of Days”), 3,000 pioneers of a new era gather in a remote former air base deep in Brooklyn to celebrate our evolution towards this moment, and to join forces to create a more perfect world. Together, we will build a model of utopia for the last of our kind, opening our arms to the diversity of post-human life and creating a new world in our image.

As the final 3,000 souls left on this planet, we ask ourselves: are we human or post-human? Granted the ability to create our own forms, what can we learn from our evolution to this point in time…and how can we evolve into a more perfect future?

Medical skills very much needed

SHOUT OUT to all medical personnel within the reach of my virtual voice!

We're looking for help with the ESD (Emergency Services Department) @ this year's Recycled Rainbow. Just looking for people to take shifts playing the role of medic, which may involve putting on band-aids, treating burn wounds, fixing scrapes or bruises. Anything major would require us to call an ambulance or one of us would drive the wounded person to the hospital. We need two more medics to fulfill our needs (you don't have to be an MD or a paramedic or an RN, but if you got SOME medical credentials, give us a holler.)

Dates for this event are: Sept 24th-27th (Thursday-Sunday)

Location: East Rochester, OH (near Minerva, Canton, Akron ... nearly a 2 hour drive from Cleveland.)

Even if you can't do this, perhaps you know someone who would be able to? We only have 2 medics, and our goal was to have 6.

It's been suggested that I post here, so here I am!

Please contact me if interested or if you know someone who is, email me at this address everyman@colorforms.net

Earth Guardian PSA

Hey, all you cool, crazy, Recycled Rainbow Cats and Kittens,

sir william, your Earth Guardian ring-leader and impresario here, and I have a special message.

I know you like to eat and drink. I also know that you love our little gifting community, where one can roam about Recycled Rainbow and receive gifts of food and beverage of all variety from your fellow participants out of the goodness of their hearts, just as you enjoy gifting things of all sorts to them. This such a great arrangement, no? Only one thing you gotta remember: vessels and utensils. Oh, the utter horror of stumbling up to JavaMama'a hut, smelling that wonderful coffee in the air, only to realize that you have no cup. Or to be offered a wonderful helping of Susan's delectable soup....but you have no bowl. And pouring it into your hands could prove painful. It is your responsibility to bring a cup, a bowl, a spoon or whatever you think you might need to receive these gifts in proper fashion. It's the burner way. It's the Earth-friendly way. It's even the cowboy way, little pardners.

So write it on your list of things to bring, write it on your hands, write it in the sky, I don't care.

Just remember, friends.

BM ticket available for $240 in Pittsburgh area

Howdy!

The short version of my story is that I have a BM ticket bought at the first-level price ($240), and I can't use it. If you're going to BM and don't have a ticket yet, it'll cost you $300 via Internet sales or $360 at the box office at the front gate. I'd really appreciate it if you could take this ticket off my hands!

I live in squirrel hill. I'd prefer cash for payment, but checks/paypal are fine.

Sorry if this post violates any rules about posting for sales or anything. I couldn't find any rules page for this tribe.

I'll check this topic regularly, but I'm probably more likely to get your message if you send me a direct message.

Let me know!

Urgent message from Javamama (Volunteer Coordinator):

Okay, it's that time again. Recycled Rainbow Elevation is only 6 weeks away. As Volunteer Bitch, I mean Witch, I'm here to get on your case. You know you want to volunteer!

What could be better than to weild the power of a Greeter (paddles and cat o' nine tails anyone?).

Find out what it's like to be the troll under the bridge, I mean to be a Gate Keeper.

Are you a caring, gentle, nurting person who has first aid knowledge or more? You could volunteer with the Emergency Services Department. Being caring, gentle and nurturing are not prerequisites but they are nice if you're patching up somebody's boo boos.

Ever wanted to be a law enforcement officer? Well, you could be a Ranger. Even if you didn't want to in law enforcement you could be a Ranger. Rangers are not the police but they do help to "keep things running smoothly and lightly", to quote Camp Daddy our Ranger Team Lead.

Earth Guardians are looking for a few good burners. The only requirement is a desire to ensure that no trace is left when we leave. Help educate everyone to the "Leave No Trace" mantra. Be aware and pick up moop wherever you see it.

There are many other ways that you can help to create Recycled Rainbow Elevation. Let me know if you would like to roll up your sleeves and participate. Everybody knows that volunteers have more fun!

Farewell to Megan / Burner Meet and Greet

Burners, future Burners, friends of Megan,

As most of you know, Megan will be leaving Pittsburgh for Seattle, and then for a year in Switzerland. So...

We're going to have a party to send her off - my place, Saturday, June 13, 7:30PM. Great food, The Traditional First Mint Juleps of Spring, and a new kind of art!

Several people have nearly died drinking The Traditional First Mint Juleps of Spring, so if you're planning to bring a trampoline to the party, then PLEASE don't spin fire while jumping on the trampoline after consuming more than one. But otherwise, fire spinning in my back yard is much encouraged.

Newbies welcome - bring your friends - come meet seasoned local burners and bond over food, fun, and fire!

Address is 108 Foxwood Drive, Wexford, PA 15090.

Email me a yes/no/maybe so I know how many cases of bourbon to buy :P

WickerMan 2009

WickerMan 2009
Set-up May 15-17, The Burn May 21-25

WickerMan brings together Burn Culture, the Art of Giving and Ecological Responsibility in a festival that depends on the Radical Self-Expression of each individual. Based on the tenets of Burning Man of the Black Rock Desert, we actively incorporate their founding principles- Communal Participation, Decommodification, Radical Inclusion and Radical Self-Reliance. In essence, at WickerMan, Radical Self-Expression Meets Radical Earth Spirit.
We convene to celebrate what we as individuals offer to the community, through Art, Gifting and Self-Reliant Participation. Together we commune within the land to build and burn the biggest Man east of the Mississippi River. Individual participation is what makes this event happen, we depend on each other for content and execution. Every contribution, from Volunteering to Art Creation is essential to facilitate this WickerMan. What do you bring to the table?
Art, in its many mysterious ways, is at the core of this event. WickerMan offers over $6000 in Art Grants to fund a variety of initiatives, everything from Theme Camps, to beautiful Installations, Altars and Performance. Through Action and Creation we transcend the expected and stretch the paradigm of the possible.
WickerMan will again take place at Four Quarters of Artemas, PA, a beautifully ecologically diverse campground. Four Quarters has natural swimming holes in Sideling Creek, rolling meadows and pine forest. Four Quarters also has a great Ride-Share database to help you carpool to the event. Bring yourself and your inspiration to be a part of a community separate from the 'default world'. Check out www.wickermanburn.org for more information, Art Grants, voluteering and event registration.

RR Primer: The FS Interview

RR PRIMER
May 23, 24 & 25 2009
Crystal Springs Campground
31478 Bagley Rd
North Ridgeville, OH 44039
(440) 748-3200
$10

www.recycledrainbow.org

This is an interview with Twinkles who we caught up with after hearing about the RR meeting held this past weekend. A lot of details about the upcoming Recycled Rainbow event were released on Saturday, but try as we might to get information about RR 2009, Twinkles would only talk to us about something called Primer. After fifteen minutes we got sick of trying to pry RR information out of him and decided to ask questions about this Primer thing. Both Twinkles and our interviewer were very sleepy when this interview was recorded, at 5am on Monday morning.

What is Recycled Rainbow Primer and how does it differ from Recycled Rainbow?
First off, let me say DRIVE FIVE MILES AN HOUR OR SLOWER IN THE CAMPGROUND!

Also, I'd like to say that I dislike the term "differ"- I also dislike the term "Recycled Rainbow Primer" it should be called simply "Primer"- or better yet "PRIMER". But I suppose you need to know for what you are being "primed". You might be being primed for RR. Or not.

That's pronounced "Arr Arr", by the way.

Indeed.
Primer is a two or three day free-for-all in North Ridgeville, OH put on by the Recycled Rainbow people as an excuse to build things. They like building things, the Recycled Rainbow people- it has been suggested by more than one person- or actually I think it was one person- that Recycled Rainbow is an event where there are no spectators and everyone is building something- so you get a ton of interesting bars, sculptures, camps and unusual spaces that are mostly empty because the people who would inhabit these structures are all building their own structures. And then there's Saturday night and to some extent, Friday night where those who have finished their "projects" begin to get out and hang out with other people's stuff- but Primer is the pre-event-

Primer was originally put together as a promotional tool?
Sort of. It was both a way to show people what we're doing and also to prototype projects.

People have a low tolerance for discomfort and while Primer isn't 100% comfortable- like sitting on a cushion in a house watching people perform- but you're not driving two hours and you have amenities nearby. And it's also 15 minutes away.

Did I mention it's only 15 minutes from Cleveland?

There is a port-a-potty (which is our own special monument) and usually more than one fire.

And there's no electricity?
Correct. Recycled Rainbow has plenty of electricity and water. It has a restroom and sometimes showers. Primer has none of these things- except a port-a-potty and a pavilion that's infested with wasps and yellow jackets.

But it's fun anyway?
Fun is an interesting idea.

Fun is what you make it. Everyman usually brings out the battery array and lights and I'll bring out my PA and projector (mostly because I'm stupid enough to subject my projector to rain) and we'll set up a DJ station and late at night play video mash-ups of pornography and horror films. There's also a very loud train that passes by every 15 minutes or so.

Sounds terrible!
It is. But it's one of the most fun events any of us have been to because it's a little uncomfortable. The train is a good example of this. Because of the train we can play music or whatnot as loud as we want at any hour of the night. Last year I remember waking up at 4am because I had to pee- and was greeted with the sounds of amplified fornication. I looked around and found people roasting marshmallows in a thunderstorm.

This is the second year for Primer?
Yes. Last year Primer was only one night. We wanted one day to prototype our structures and I wanted to burn mine because there was a specific thing I wanted to have happen when [the project] burned and didn't know if it would work.

And did it?
Yes. But I discovered a different way of doing it there. I was originally going to use wax and ended up using hot glue.

Ok...
But yes, Primer this year is going to be for three days- almost as long as Recycled Rainbow. It will be on Memorial Day Weekend (which is when the house events used to regularly occur) which means we'll really have to prepare for the rain.

Is it going to rain?
That's a terribly stupid question. Who knows? Probably.

I'm not a fan of rain, but we're just starting to figure out creative ways of dealing with [rain]. I think the way this works with us is at first we experience a discomfort or a problem and then the next year you start seeing people building stuff or planning things to deal with that discomfort. They usually end up using the discomfort or addressing it in creative ways. In 2007, for example, we were gifting dry socks to people.

What were you gifting in 2008?
Medical attention and meatheads.

Medical attention?
Yeah. We really look forward to all the medical attention. Wait. No, we DON'T look forward to medical attention. We like attention.

Meatheads?
Did I say we like attention? We don't like attention. Yes, meatheads- we don't care for meatheads either.

That's pronounced "meeeth-eeeds", by the way.

But you just pronounced it "meat-heads"
No I didn't.

Do people get hurt often at Primer or RR?
You can't have fun in a vaccuum. Something has to happen to have fun- or at least there has to be the possibility of something happening. If you make things as safe as you possibly can, we tend to think you're going to reduce the possibility for fun.

So the possibility for danger is proportional to the possibility for fun?
Well... I don't know much about math.

If the possibility exists for a little danger- like with fire spinners or a large fire- or a naked guy running around with a big pair of scissors- the possibility for fun increases. That's the theory anyway. It's not ours.

But no, people don't get hurt often.

One thing that's important to remember at Primer tho-

FIVE MILES PER HOUR!

RR doesn't have much in the way of injury. Most of it's just minor burns and people busting their heads open because they're falling from great heights. I think that's why we've chosen the theme "Elevation" this year- to get the people higher in the air so they have a longer distance to fall.

That doesn't sound safe.
It doesn't? Hm.

So, tell me a little about what to expect this year at Primer.
That's another pretty stupid question. I can't. I don't know what to expect.

We've just begun putting our plans together. It's always going to be different. I can say that you'll see people building things and you'll have a good time.

Primer is a little more laid back than RR is- meaning you can come and go as you please, you can buy beer at the local store in Elyria and come by after you've paid your cover- you can visit just during the day- return- you know.

I've heard you lock people in the event during RR
Well, I don't know about "lock in". We discourage people from leaving to go get things they forgot and we want you to be a part of the event- for the duration of the event. It's just another obstacle to make things more interesting. We're in to making things interesting. We're kind of like gluttons for punishment. While others like to party and get wasted... wait. We like to get wasted too....

I think it has something to do with camping and power tools...

Anyway, a big difference between RR and Primer is... there are fewer barriers to deal with at Primer. That makes it less fun to me, personally, but most people aren't used to that idea of this important relationship between fun and discomfort.

So you have more fun the more uncomfortable you are?
For me, and for alot of us, it's always more fun when it's harder to get to the fun.

How much is admission to Primer?
Primer cost $10 last year- it all goes to port-a-potties. The port-a-potty is the most important thing- without them you can't have the event. With them, you can have the event anywhere.

Where is it?
We usually put the porta-potty right under a big Jesus-Cross. It has a superman sticker on it and if you go into the porta-potty you can turn into Jesus- or you can poop.

Where is the event??
Crystal Springs campground in North Ridgeville, OH.

It's only about 15 minutes from Cleveland across I-80 from the Autorama. Its easy to get there and easy to get back. If you don't want to camp, you don't have to. You can come, have fun, go home and sleep in your own bed, then come back the next day and do it again. And this year you can do that for three days!

We don't know why anyone in their right mind wouldn't come. You get music, performance, sake, crazy people, trains, porn and fire. If you or someone brings those things, of course. We're not spoon-feeding it to you- we don't spoon feed anyone anything. Fuck that shit. You still have to come to the event. We won't bring the event to you. If you don't want to come, DON'T COME. We're always telling people not to come to our events.

And you have to bring your own stuff. And you might have to endure rain or heat or a flying ball of fire whizzing past your head-

The only thing we ask is that you truck your trash out with you. Leave No Trace.

Oh, and FIVE MILES PER HOUR.

Any final words?
Flyers will be out soon.

Oh, and success is overrated and failure is underrated.

And DRIVE FIVE MILES AN HOUR ON THE CAMPGROUND!

RR PRIMER
May 23, 24 & 25 2009

Crystal Springs Campground

BURNING MAN LIVE (Piss Clear Mag)

Hey Pittsburgh Burners,

Do you all know about Piss Clear, the Burner magazine, that was around for 13 years? It’s been called “the Vice Magazine of the playa” – sharp and funny with an alternative view of Black Rock City. I found out that RE/Search Publications has published BURNING MAN LIVE, which has the best of all 13 years (1994-2007), including “Best of Black Rock City,” “Sex and Drugs,” “Playa Fashion Do’s and Don’ts,” “You Know You’re a Burner When…” “Borg Wars,” interviews with Larry Harvey (Burning Man cofounder) and Harley DuBois (Director of Community Services), and introductions by Brian Doherty, Adrian Roberts, and Malderor. This book is 320 pages, and HUGE (8.5 by 11 inches) of pure Burning Man history– highly recommended – with really great articles and photos.

Just go to the link below to check out the book or make an order:

www.researchpubs.com/Blog/

(it looks like the link is incomplete but it works. if you do have any problems, though, you can just go to www.researchpubs.com)

Anyway, it's an amazing book and I suggest you all check it out, if interested.

NOTE: I found this message from another BM I'm a part of. I ordered the book -- loved it, talked to the woman who is spreading the word -- and now I'm spreading the word, too. This reminds me of the old BM days, as well as the more recent. It's great fun!

Cross Post - Recycled Rainbow 2009 Theme Announcement: Elevation

Elevation is Recycled Rainbow’s theme for 2009, encouraging our participants to rise above their limitations, capabilities, and complacency towards boundless levels of creativity once thought too high to reach.

To reach Recycled Rainbow, travel to East Rochester, Ohio which is over 430 feet above Cleveland’s elevation. When you’re finally home, go far beyond the entrance, up and up, further than the ponds slipping far beneath you, outward passed all the grassy hills and trees, reaching for the sky, beyond and above the tree tops now behind you, forget about them, upward you go, to the biggest most elevated patch of the campground, already inspiring an upward sensibility, outward thinking, beyond your comfort zone, further than familiarity. You are at Recycled Rainbow … welcome home!

“Our elevation must be the result of self-efforts and work of our own hands. No other human power can accomplish it. If we but determine it shall be so, it will be so.” - Martin Delany (the first African American field officer in the United States Army during the Civil War. )

Elevation denies the default, like steam evaporating from water in nature, your consciousness raises upwards toward unexplored perception, ideas leap outward from your curious mind, beyond the barriers of your personal inhibitions, and further than your body allows.

Elevation denotes more than movement. It is uplifting, never looking down. Encouraging: to manifest into reality that which was previously imagined. Refreshing: having something new to share created by you.

If you can do your own lifting, you are lifting others as the higher elevation lifts us all.

“The human soul, as a part of the movement of life, is endowed with the ability to participate in the uplift, elevation, perfection, and completion. ” - Alfred Adler (a 19th century Austrian psychologist who was one of the three founders of depth psychology)

Creation requires elevation!

Upward, outward, beyond, and further….

I'm researching sending it via UPS, but it occurred to me to post on Tribe and see if anyone could take it on a plane. (I checked it out, its okay to take it through carry-on.) I did this to Portland ,OR with great success! Let me know if you can, thanks!

Hi all,

I’m having a (gulp) 40th birthday party on the 21st in Point Breeze, I’ve sent several of you evite invitation already – but I know there are people I’ve probably missed – so if you’d like to come along send me your Email and I’ll add it to the evite

The theme is 1968, celebrating the year I was born….so take your inspiration from there…2001, barbarella, marlin luther king, the graduate….it was a year that offers lots in inspiration!

Best Wishes!

I'd been trying to capture how I felt about Burning Man, before and after, about the "fires of transformation," and this was damn perfect. I think it should be the "official slogan";o)

BBQ, Fireworks, and Burner Meet-up Saturday (July 19th)

Sorry for the late notice, y'all, but I'll be hosting a BBQ this Saturday (July 19th).

It had also been announced (on the PGH BM Announce List) that this will be a Burner Meet-up, so come on out and meet some of the local burners.

The BBQ is mainly an excuse to celebrate the Mt. Oliver Community Days festival which happens in ...wait for it...Mt. Oliver.

Why do I care about Mt. Oliver? Well, other than being the neighborhood adjacent to my own (Carrick), they put on AMAZING fireworks at the end of the festival (last year's were provided by the Zambelli Brothers).

Oh, and they fire these off about 400 yards away from my house.

So, I'm having a BBQ and party. Bring your fire poi, your turntables and/or your computer, and wear your freaky best.

We'll probably start up around 6 pm.

Message me for directions if you need 'em.

Cheers,
Avocado Tom

Burner Afrobeats Band in Larryville tonight...

Hey all,

Aphrodesia, the 11-piece afrobeat band from San Francisco, is playing at the
Thunderbird Cafe tonight (Thursday). I've seen them a couple of times and they
totally throw down with some unique, vocally inspired music.

To boot, a couple of the folks in the band are core members of Funkcamp (my
burning man crew), making things doubly fun. I think the party afterwards
will be at my house as well.

Anyway, if you're interested in some great tunes, come on out to Larryville tonight. Show starts at 8 pm but they may not go on until 9 or so.

For a taste of what they sound like, check out their web page: http://www.aprhodesia.org/

Cheers,
Avo

Recycled Rainbow Seeks Freaks, Geeks, Art Cars & Human Stars!

(This message is posted on a few different tribes: Don't worry, you're not going crazy...or are you?)

Pyrophonicville (RR) -- Recycled Rainbow 2008 is looking like it will be bigger and badder than ever. Head gatekeeper and queen Mediaeval Baebe reports that there are many new ideas for 2008, and many new faces.

"We found some fantabulous land this year!" she said excitedly, jumping up and down and spilling her absinthe. "One of the gorgeous freak things has been working on an art car for a few months now, and there will be a burlesque performance Friday night. I hear they're seeking performers for it."

When asked about the term "gorgeous freak things", Mediaeval Baebe pointed to a group photo of people otherwise known as "burners", or "those lame ass drug addicted dirty hippies" according to Fox News.

"There are loads of ideas and shenanigans being planned for RR this year. I don't even know WHERE to begin." MB reported. "We invite YOU to bring YOUR thing. Here's the stage, now you have the freedom to show your stuff."

Recycled Rainbow will be held Thursday, September 25th - Sunday the 28th. Tickets are on sale now. To purchase tickets (and get more information), visit the website @ http://www.recycledrainbow.org

The Art of Freedom @ Burning Man

Call for Papers and Presentations:

THE ART OF FREEDOM
An Interdisciplinary Arts Conference

August 28, 2008
Black Rock City, Nevada

How can we recognize, articulate, and navigate the politics of art and freedom? What are the roles of our communities, cultures, and societies in enabling or restricting arts and freedoms? What freedoms are needed to enable artistic expression? What limitations do we struggle against to achieve artistic freedom? How can freedom be experienced as a form of art? Can art create freedom?

THE ART OF FREEDOM is an Interdisciplinary Arts Conference that will take place on August 28, 2008 in Black Rock City, Nevada at Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Scholars and creative thinkers from all levels of education and experience are invited to submit proposals for panel presentations. Conference sessions will typically consist of panels of three 20-minute paper presentations, but we are also open to proposals with creative and unusual presentation formats (feel free to think outside the box!)

Possible presentation topics might include (but are not limited to):

* Inquiries related to Art, Freedom, and the “American Dream.”
* Considerations of Burning Man and its relation to culture, society, law, or politics.
* Discussions of specific Burning Man Art installations or projects.
* Presentations on censorship in relation to artistic freedom.
* Proposals for new directions in activism related to art and freedom.
* Explorations of the relationships between subcultural expression and “mainstream” cultures.

These are just a few sample topics – we are open to considering any presentation that offers an engaged and/or creative approach to the conference theme.

The conference will be hosted by Freedomcommunity at Burning Man, and all participants should be familiar with the unique conditions of the Black Rock City environment. Note that the minimum cost for attending Burning Man is over $300, so participants should already have plans to attend the festival or should be prepared to embrace the festival in its fullness.

For more information, please contact David Higgins, Glaukopis Conference Coordinator: (glaukopisproject@gmail.com).

Abstracts of 250 words should be sent to (glaukopisproject@gmail.com) no later than June 30, 2008.

Notification will be sent regarding accepted proposals in early July.

Raise the Nut ! ! !

I went to Scorched Nuts with Gretchen and had a great time. My only complaint was the full port-a-johns, but that was remedied with the arrival of the honey wagon on Saturday evening. I liked the layout of campground with the open center field and the theme camps surrounding it. I camped with the fire tenders, who I know from Brushwood. Most of the participants were from Ohio, Indiana, or Kentucky. We even took a walk through the creek. The weather was warm and sunny except for a brief thunderstorm. Several people brought their dogs who roomed from campsite to campsite. There was 1 art car providing music and laser effects throughout the campgrounds. The fire conclave was great. People were creative in their outfits and camps but there was not much art. They were giving tethered hot air ballon rides as well. Sadly, I did not see any zombies.

Here's the thing, we have to go to Minnesota for work. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the date was changed from this week to next week so yes, I have to change the date for Temple Building to the week after the Art Olympics and now it will be: SATURDAY JUNE 28TH!!! Nothing beyond an act of God will prevent this! All the same info from before still stands except for the note that we can't paint the cut outs or decorate them with color. Writing or drawing on them with a black marker/pen is fine though.

I don't think I am going.....

I kind of want to , but I kind of don't . I have spent alot of money I don't have to go in the past, and I think I want to stay home and make $$ and save up for another cd or finish my opera, I am still writing my opera, but I know if I were out there , looking at all the other work being done, I would just get upset that I couldn't afford to do my own, again.... Burning Man for me has always been about jumping on other folks projects, because I live too far away and don't have enough of my own money to bring my own. I have made lifelong friends and been a part of spectacular things, but this year I have had an offer to open for Alex Skolnick trio, the guitarist from Testament's jazz group, here in Pittsburgh, during the event, and I am deciding to stay here and do that. Burning Man has been an amazing portal and journey for me, and I don't dis it, I am not mad they couldn't fund my opera, they have helped me meet so many wonderful people, all because Chicken John dropped me off there once 11 years ago and said, "Help them, they need help, just look at'em, they're a mess.... like you, you'll get along great." He was right, we did, infamously so.

So to all the world, I say, if you can go, go, I will be there in spirit. Maybe I will visit you in your American Dreams......

HELP US FIND LAND! FOR RR!!!!

Recycled Rainbow had 3 pieces of land that were "sure things" and all 3 just fell through. Okay, 2 fell through, and one is less than ideal.

We'd like to do this in late September, like last year ... and we've been looking at land much closer to Pittsburgh.

I'm making tons of phone calls and keep getting that "no noise after 11 pm" response .... I am getting tired of that.

Tell me, at Frostburn, I know they had a curfew of 11 pm, but how real was it? Did you feel you could have gotten away with a lot of music? DID you get away with a lot? COULD you? Is cooper lake bigger than cooper lake realizes?

That said, any other suggestions?

Being able to be loud at late hours is a must.

Please tell me between Ohio and PA, there is a place where we can make this happen?

Burner BBQ Saturday Afternoon

It's been a while since we've all gotten together, and I've had a taste lately for Tiki drinks, so come share the warmth at a Burner BBQ this Saturday (4/26) at my house, staring at 1:00. Address is 108 Foxwood Drive, Wexford, PA 15090. After the BBQ, we'll head to Lawrenceville for "Art All Night."

In the 1930's, America became infatuated with Polynesian culture, the mysterious South Seas, and the Orient. A former bootlegger and world traveler "Donn the Beachcomber" brought all of this to our shores with a chain of restaurants featuring exotic cuisine and drinks from faraway islands like the Missionary's Downfall, Navy Grog, and the Zombie. A competitor - south seas roustabout "Trader" Vic Bergeron (who walked with a wooden leg, having lost it on the high seas) emerged and created an even bigger restaurant empire, featuring drinks like the Mai Tai, the Scorpion Bowl, and the Fog Cutter. The love affair with all things Tiki lasted until the 70's.

Except that these two didn't quite tell the truth. Donn the Beachcomber and Trader Vic pretty much made up all of the culture, and the cuisine, and the drinks. Donn the Beachcomber was actually a guy from Texas named Earnest Beaumont-Gantt, and Trader Vic had never even been out of the country. He (admittedly) just ripped off Donn's idea. And his artificial leg was the result of a childhood bout with tuberculosis.

So, come as your favorite south seas roustabout, or Polynesian witch doctor, or restaurant magnate, starting at 1:00, this Saturday. I'll make the Navy Grog.

wickerman burning - new summertime PA burn!

www.wickermanburning.org

I wanted to let everyone know about a new burn, and I am part of the planning team for it, so my opinion is biased!

The burn is "Wicker Man," to be held Thursday through Monday, Memorial Day weekend; and we have a setup weekend, the weekend before. We are trying to lay the groundwork that will grow into a full-on burn, with an amazing site, roads for art cars, a $4,000 art grant budget and plans for a stupendous effigy.

We will be using Four Quarters as our site, which has the rep as one of the most edgy and progressive non-profit camps on the east coast. They have given us their full support for Wicker Man. Four Quarters has a piped water system, hot showers, flush toilets and of course port-a-potties. Buried power lines for their bio-fueled camp generator, a covered stage and three swimming holes. Lots of camping under tall trees and out in the sun too. And 2 miles of gravelled roads. Four Quarters is located 100 miles west of DC and Baltimore, just off I-68.

We want to develop a burn that is art focused and will support big art. And one that has a vision of the future of burns that is sustainable, ecologically responsible and leaves behind a small foot print. Thus "Wicker Man;" the old celebration of the Green Man and Green energy. We already have over 20 theme camps and art projects registered, and we are just beginning our announcements. We plan to have three "Theme Towns." "Sound Town," where we can run sound all night long, like the Gaian MInd psytrance festival held at Four Quarters. "Sin City" down along the river, a cure for what ever ails you. And "Center Circle," a place for nature and spirit; held inside the amazing stone circle at Four Quarters. (Yes, there is a circle of standing stones and they are BIG!)

And then there is the Man. Planned at 35 feet high our man stands on a round Temple to the Spirit of Fire, a big enough room that you can enter and place your own art and offerings to the burn. The roof of the temple is a deck upon which stands the Man, and people can stand too.. His belly is the Upper Temple, with room for just one person at a time. Each of his arms will hold a flaming fire pot, and we hope, will move as he burns. This is a huge project and we are looking to get as many people involved in his construction as possible. Ground breaking for the Man is Friday, May 9th, and then the next two weekends until he burns.

I could go on and on, but our web site is up, with the first design drawings for the Man, pictures of art grant projects and theme camps. We have a list serve / forum too. So visit the web site at wickermanburning.org for much more info.

Wicker Man Burning, In Fire We Trust."

I tried emailing the burn_pgh list about this and it bounced, so I'm a-posting here.

I'm going away! probably for good! And I will miss you!

So come celebrate my leaving, or tell me you'll miss me with a farewell/housewarming/house-leaving/whatever party on April 19 at 7 pm! Happens at 1646 Denniston 1R (my apartment) and if you need directions, let me know (zip: 15217). It's all street parking. Please RSVP so I have enough snacks, and BYOB cause I don't drink (also BYOCorkscrew).

Since I'm leaving, please no presents even if you really love me, although donations for travel are gratefully accepted.

I'm not sure how this didn't get posted here before, but:

Announcing the official Frostburn "decom" after-party! Help us celebrate the success of our premiere regional burn and enjoy a little more of that burner vibe--the one that makes us tolerate camping in adverse conditions with a smile on our faces and love in our hearts!

Everyone is welcome weather you made it to Frostburn or not.

FROSTBURN DECOM

And don't worry about the drive home, because crash space is available! On-street parking is limited, so please carpool if you can.

Scorched Nuts - Ohio Burn June 19-22nd

Scorched Nuts is in College Corner OH from June 19-22nd. A group of us went last year and had a fantastic time. This year promises to be bigger and better.

The theme this year is Gonzo. I am bringing my Hunter S Thompson inspired Playa camp Bat Country there this year to support the theme. There is talk of finding a "red shark". You are welcome to join and attend with us. Email me directly about info.

Scorched Nuts tickets are on sale now and can be found at: http://www.scorchednuts.com with all the info...

Transformus (East coast regional July 18-20)

Transformus invites are available now.

I'm hoping plan a camp together with other Pittsburghers. We're hoping to do a (Pittsburgh legend) Mr. Rodgers themed camp, something along the lines of "Mr. Rogers Land of Twisted Make-Believe." or "Mr. Rodgers Naked Hood"

If you write we were to be a part of the same camp we probably have a better chance to be invited.

If you want to join us, just mention Mr. Rodgers camp in the invite where it asks you about "theme camp"

Transformus is widely considered by some to be the best burn not on the Playa. It is July 18 through July 20 South of Asheville, NC.

I am forwarding information about their ticketing system:

Tranformus Invites!

We are using a new system for invites to address the likelihood that more people will want to attend the event than we are able to accommodate.

We are able to invite 1,500 people to the event this year. Each invite will cost $55. Children age 5 and under enter free with legal guardian.
One person may request one or two invites using a form that will be available on the web site (http://www.transformus.com) starting at 12:00 noon (Eastern time) on Friday, February 29. You will have until the end of the day on Sunday, March 9, to complete the form, so there is no need to all rush at noon on Friday. (There is no advantage in completing your form before others, as long as you meet the March 9 deadline.)
Please go to http://www.transformus.com, create an account (if you don't already have one) and make sure you can log in.
Contact web@transformus.com if you have any technical issues.
Stay tuned for detailed instructions via e-mail announcements and on the web site

Peace,
Kip

Please forward this message to anyone who might be interested.

I own one of these:
http://www.handcycle.com/

Before I put it up for sale on eBay, I'd like to see if anyone that I know,
knows someone that might want to buy it.

It's really designed for someone who doesn't have the use of their legs, but
I bought it to improve upper body strength. It provides a smooth,
comfortable workout, like a bicycle, but of course works a different set of
muscles.

Retails for almost $3,000, I paid about $2,000 for it eight years ago, and
I'd be willing to let it go for about $1,000.00 cash... or make me an offer.

Tires need new tubes, but otherwise it's in good shape.

Thanks,
Noise

Hoo-ray for Frostburn! // lost pair o' multi-pliers

So I sez to Piper, I sez, "Pittsburgh people are pretty darned friendly. I know cuz my sistah lives there. Let's go to their burn."

Boy howdy, was that a good plan!

In spite of the 13+ hour drive each way (fuck you, New York trafficx0rz!), I found myself immediately energized upon arrival and coasting on a wave of happy after getting home. The site was awesome, and the organizers clearly knew what they were doing. I will definitely recommend this regional to anyone who asks how it went. The simple fact of having it in the dead of winter takes it to a new & interesting level, because it presents a new set of survival challenges most burners haven't dealt with before.

I was really impressed. Thanks so much, folks!

pee.ess. During exodizing, I believe I lost a Gerber leatherman-type multi-tool. Possibly in the sweat lodge, as this was the last place I sat down before leaving. If anyone happened to find it, I will happily provide a pre-postaged conveyance for its safe return, and reward you with gen-u-ine Bahston chowdah to boot!

Thank You, Frostburners!

THANK YOU to everyone who attended Frostburn, for a weekend that far exceeded our hopes and expectations! We couldn't have asked for a better group of people to share the burner vibe with Western Pennsylvania: without the fire performers from the South, Mid-Atlantic theme camps, Midwest volunteers, Northeast party spirit or local cooks and artists, our premiere burn wouldn't have been so amazing. It may not show on the thermometer, but Pittsburgh is a little warmer this February thanks to YOUR efforts!

If you have photos, please send the link, and let us know if we can share them!

If you turned in a census form before leaving, thank you again. If you didn't get the chance, or you would like to provide additional comments, please email your thoughts and suggestions over the next week. We'll have a pow-wow soon, to read and discuss your feedback and brainstorm ways to create an even-better event next year. But first, we have to scrape the ice and snow from our gear, and catch up on the email (and everything/everyone else) we've been neglecting these past few days...

Cooper's Lake Campground has invited us back next year, and although there is so much to do before we can think about 2009, we hope you'll return and contribute to our next burn. Please reserve January 16-19, 2009 (Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday weekend) on your calendars today!

Thank you, once again, for Sharing the Warmth!

Peace,
Frostburn

Frostburn has me stumped

Frostburn is just a few weeks away now and I have no idea what kind of project(s) (if any) to try and bring. My girlfriend and I are coming in from Rochester, NY and both of us are excited about it, but I just can't get a handle on "participation".

Part of the problem is that almost nothing I bring to Burning Man will work in the snow or cold. I think my EL-wire coat will fit over a warmer coat, but that's just, well, a coat. Decorated bikes seem out-of-place. So ... sleds? EL-wire cross-country skis? Hanging dusk-to-dawn firefly lights? Hot cider and booze? Mulled wine? Nothing seems to grab me and go "yeah: that sounds awesome!"

Buying a pick-up truckload of wood seems excessive as we're not bringing a camp, and I'm kind of believing that fire and fires will be a big part of this so I'm not all that concerned about being cold. Heck, regardless, given the long underwear and outerwear I have I think I'd be content to have fun at 20 below.

I'm kind of kicking myself right now going, "umm: hurry up and figure it out!" My creativity doesn't seem to comprehend that request, though, and it's taking its sweet time.

Fuck you, I love you,

All,

If anyone is interested in volunteering at Frostburn, we are actively looking for folks
to welcome Frostburn attendees at that gate. This basically requires
hanging out around a fire, probably listening to music, and making people
feel at home when they arrive.

Expect to meet lots of people, get into some good meandering
conversations, and generally be the first thing people see when they
arrive at Frostburn.

Message me for more details.

Cheers,
Avo

Burner gatherings before FrostBurn?

I just moved to town and I'm looking forward to meeting local Burners.
However, I will be out of town on president's day weekend and won't be able to attend FrostBurn. :(

Are there any formal or informal Pittsburner gatherings where I could meet y'all before (and after) then?
If not then let's just make some. :) There must be some good shows, or bars, or films, or...?

Anyhow, I need to meet some like-minded people here fast, before I become convinced that everyone is a sports junkie or a couch potato.

theme camp ideas

I am considering doing a "Stone Soup" themed installation ...

'our people must be fed!'
:-)

the idea would be - if you bring something to contribute to the cooking pot, you may fill your bowl with the homemade soup. it can simmer all weekend over a low flame, and theoretically, the longer it cooks the better it will taste. (just don't bring anything you wouldn't want to eat yourself!)

I can get broth and veggies to start it, and I already have a good size enameled canning pot/lobster pot to put it all in.

I'd need to pre-purchase wood for the fire - and rig some sort of hanging bar to suspend it over the flame... anyone want to join in?

Baba Yaga's 3 chicken footed hut would be perfect for this!
too bad we never got around to building it ...

hi... I was hoping someone in pittsburgh could help me out... I just relocated here from Chicago, where I have a few burner friends and access to a great network of activities which we participate in - like a sew op among other things... im hoping someone on here could answer this question for me... are there any groups in pittsburgh that work on or volunteer their time for causes that have to do with building? I am interested in constructing organic architecture (i am trained as an architect) or volunteering my time to building homes for the needy...

" Ticket sales have been postponed until we receive a confirmation letter in the mail. As you know, this is a slow time of year for the post office and it's taking longer than we'd like. Subscribe to our News Blog to receive notification of our on-sale date/time, which will be announced the day we receive the confirmation letter. Apologies for the delay and thank you for your patience and understanding."

Ya'll are just kidding about some letter-or-other not arriving, aren't you? Pittsburgh is just pulling our leg about camping in the snow, right?

Come on, you can let us in on the joke. It's funny, really! I promise we will laugh and laugh and laugh.
